What made this movie good is the suttee twists and character developments. Lois now has the added responsibility of being a mother which she is struggling with. She now knows that her son is the son of Superman but does not remember it ever happening. Lex is darker than ever. Superman caving into his human temptation to spy on Lois.
@Trekfreek Well I read a few Superman comic books in my childhood days, I saw Superman Animated Series, and well... they are different. Certainly there are more Sup's stories than: Luthor want to do bad things, and Superman romancing with Lois. Also plot of this movie and villain motivations was almost as bad as plot of so called ST XI. You can just go into Fortress of Solitude and get unlimited access to Kryptonian knowledge? There is many more plote holes like that...
@1701EarlGrey There are no plot holes if you keep in mind that this is a sequel to Superman 2. The fortress is always unlocked in all 5 movies well the first 2, Sup4 and this one. The villains motivations were the same as in Superman 1. To kill Superman and get rich on selling land to the more desperate countries, it’s a great motivation. If I wanted to get rich and did not care about life I might do the something. What plot holes? Sup & Lois have sex in sup2 and 5 years latter..

@1701EarlGrey By the way this is not the first time Superman Spied on Lois. In fact he did it at least 2 other times. The 1st time was in the comic book when Superman was losing his powers. The 2nd was in the TV show Lois & Clark. Just one other note: Women don't get over men as quickly as men get over women. It’s just the way we are wired. Lots of times women will latch onto a man, not for love, but to fill the void in their hart (my last girlfriend).
I agree with 4 out of 5 points here. The exception being when Superman watched Lois in her home. I think it was meant to show how much he loved her, missed her, blah blah blah, and I might be mistaken about this, but to also show a paternal side towards his son. Even though it wasn't mentioned explicitly at this point in the movie, I think the subtext is that although we didn't know at that point, he knew the boy was his son. That should have been in your video - him having a son by Lois.
I thought Superman Returns was excellent! At first I was surprised it didn't do as well as Spiderman. I agree with your assessment of Lois Lane. I think that someone like Kate Beckinsale would have been a much better. But what was really missing from the new movie was martial arts type action and super villains.

@Psykogundam Lois didn't necessarily know the kid was his as he erased her memory at the end of Superman 2, although kids display of limited powers may have made her think so.
PS. I recently tried Lois and Clark again and I was surprised how good the first three seasons were. The only terrible episode of the series was the actual wedding episode.
Kate was no younger than Kidder was when she played Louis and she did a great job. Second, Superman took plenty of bows in the first four movies-TV shows-comics-cartoons. You just don't remember. Clark/superman had spied on Louis many times in the comics when they were dating and in Louis and Clark. Finally Clark is the disguise not Superman. Even Donor’s cut of Superman 2 had Louis kissing only Superman. Get your facts next time.
There are 40 reasons it sucks. Kate Bosworth looks 15 years old. Lois, to have a five year old son who was born while she was at the Planet, must be in her 30s at least. Parker Posey would have been perfect in this roll. Brandon Routh is too young. He is Superboy. Hes a pencil necked geek & was only cast because the target audience for everything these days is 13 year old girls. The constant repeated dialogue from the first film makes me want to reach into my TV and slap everyone.
I very much like Singer's X-Men, but I just got the feeling he doesn't know Superman very well. It was just a semi-ripoff of the Christopher Reeve movie.

In sequels Master mind is crippled, Quick Silver is a female which neither were that way in the comic.
The only agree with two thing. You're right about Kate Bosworth, she had more screen time than Superman and she was lousey and Superman spying on Lois. You also forgot to mention the lack of action, a movie where Superman does't throw a single punch....at least he could have punced down a wall or something. You forgot Number one: the kid. Superman would have had to leave BECAUSE Lois had met someone else and had sex with him within a few days of Superman II, because otherwise, she would have been showing signs of pregnancy. See the family guy clip for more.

@hydrolito as you hear if you are listening in the first movie, the fortess contains the knowledge of 26 known galaxies, which is perhaps why it takes from the age of 18 to 30 for Kal-El to learn it before he becomes superman in the first movie.the Phantom Zone & Argo city are minor aspects of the knowledge contained in the fortess. In fact, Argo city, in the movies was only a fabrication made by the salkinds to cash in on Supergirl. the only comic book Kryptonian City to survive was Kandor.
@drakocarrion Wrong the Salkinds did not fabricate Argo City for the movie it was based on the comic books and had been mentioned numerous times the first time was in Action Comics #252 in 1959 which anyone who read used Action, Superman and Supergirl comics from before 1978 should know about.

@CrimsonTideDC3 Movie critics mention the bad but they generally also mention some positive aspects even of movies they don't like. How can you be a critic without mentioning faults one reason I don't care for J.Lo and Steve Tyler as Idol Judges they brag up the contestants to much didn't care that much for Simon either as he exaggerated how bad they were, but some criticism is necesary if you want to make improvements.

George Reeves was 6 years and 104 episodes 2 of 26 and 4 of 13 and Dean Cain's was 104 episodes but 4 seasons of 26 episodes. So combined G.Reeves plus D. Cain would be 208 that's 10 less than Smallville. Superboy 1988-1992 (1/2 hour episodes) was 100 episodes so it was also less than half that of Smallville.

In Superman 3 there was artificle kryptonite which is esentially the same thing as black kryptonite that created a double of him.Blue kryptonite I don't remember had various forms of kryptonite in comics green, gold, red, crystal.

Why do people think they are a movie critic just because of youtube a they own a video camera?! I think the movie had some slow points, but overall it was done well. Brandon did a great job. The movie brought back the elements we loved from the original. I wish Brandon was returning for the Man of Steel , but I think Henry Cavill will be great. Michael Shannon as Zod is also a great casting choice.

It was about Superman's Struggle to fit back into a society now use to his absence; His debate on whether or not to tell his son who he is. Now that Lois has moved on how does he fit in her life? They felt that those movies were so bad that they should not be part of the cannon of the movies. Returns takes place after II and this is made clear through the shock on Clark's face when he realizes that Lois's son is his son.

To anyone saying "you just wanted an action movie!," let me remind you that Batman Begins, which is considered one of the best superhero movies of all time, is completely devoid of action until the last half of the movie. The reason it was so popular is that it delivered such a strong story and great characters that we were hooked even before he donned the Cape and Cowl. Superman Returns did NOT have a strong story in any way, shape or form. There was nothing interesting, or exciting in it.

This movie ruins Superman's character by making him into A stalker/deadbeat dad! I'll never forgive Bryant Singer for how he painted himself into A corner like that! What I find funny is that the movie going public was outraged at how Superman became a stalker, but Edward Cullen can stalk Bella, and watch her while she's sleeping, and nobody has A problem with that! (Except the same comic fans who were disappointed at this movie!) Hollywood hypocrisy at it's finest!

But keep in mind that it had been almost 30 years since we'd seen a Superman movie, the characters had to be reintroduced for a new generation. I think if WB had given Bryan Singer the chance to do a sequel, it would've been amazing.

@1701EarlGrey By the way this is not the first time Superman Spied on Lois. In fact he did it at least 2 other times. The 1st time was in the comic book when Superman was losing his powers. The 2nd was in the TV show Lois & Clark. Just one other note: Women don't get over men as quickly as men get over women. It’s just the way we are wired. Lots of times women will latch onto a man, not for love, but to fill the void in their hart (my last girlfriend).

I agree with 4 out of 5 points here. The exception being when Superman watched Lois in her home. I think it was meant to show how much he loved her, missed her, blah blah blah, and I might be mistaken about this, but to also show a paternal side towards his son. Even though it wasn't mentioned explicitly at this point in the movie, I think the subtext is that although we didn't know at that point, he knew the boy was his son. That should have been in your video - him having a son by Lois.

I thought Superman Returns was excellent! At first I was surprised it didn't do as well as Spiderman. I agree with your assessment of Lois Lane. I think that someone like Kate Beckinsale would have been a much better. But what was really missing from the new movie was martial arts type action and super villains.

Kate was no younger than Kidder was when she played Louis and she did a great job. Second, Superman took plenty of bows in the first four movies-TV shows-comics-cartoons. You just don't remember. Clark/superman had spied on Louis many times in the comics when they were dating and in Louis and Clark. Finally Clark is the disguise not Superman. Even Donor’s cut of Superman 2 had Louis kissing only Superman. Get your facts next time.

There are 40 reasons it sucks. Kate Bosworth looks 15 years old. Lois, to have a five year old son who was born while she was at the Planet, must be in her 30s at least. Parker Posey would have been perfect in this roll. Brandon Routh is too young. He is Superboy. Hes a pencil necked geek & was only cast because the target audience for everything these days is 13 year old girls. The constant repeated dialogue from the first film makes me want to reach into my TV and slap everyone.

@marysw He didn't know Xmen either as Rouge seemed more like Kitty Pride and Iceman was turned into a kid even though he was an adult an in the Xmen before Wolverine, but what comic book movie director bothers to read the comic. I think before they have a director make a movie based on a comic or a book he should at least read it first. In sequels Master mind is crippled, Quick Silver is a female which neither were that way in the comic.

The only agree with two thing. You're right about Kate Bosworth, she had more screen time than Superman and she was lousey and Superman spying on Lois. You also forgot to mention the lack of action, a movie where Superman does't throw a single punch....at least he could have punced down a wall or something. With that said, its a shame it wasn't as good as it was supposed to be, it's not horrible or great, it's just boring.

You forgot Number one: the kid. Superman would have had to leave BECAUSE Lois had met someone else and had sex with him within a few days of Superman II, because otherwise, she would have been showing signs of pregnancy. See the family guy clip for more.
Also, he wasn't so much a pervert as a Super-Stalker which I hated when I saw this in the theater. They were pulling that crap In SV with the Clexana storyline.

@hydrolito as you hear if you are listening in the first movie, the fortess contains the knowledge of 26 known galaxies, which is perhaps why it takes from the age of 18 to 30 for Kal-El to learn it before he becomes superman in the first movie.the Phantom Zone & Argo city are minor aspects of the knowledge contained in the fortess. In fact, Argo city, in the movies was only a fabrication made by the salkinds to cash in on Supergirl. the only comic book Kryptonian City to survive was Kandor.

@CrimsonTideDC3 Movie critics mention the bad but they generally also mention some positive aspects even of movies they don't like. How can you be a critic without mentioning faults one reason I don't care for J.Lo and Steve Tyler as Idol Judges they brag up the contestants to much didn't care that much for Simon either as he exaggerated how bad they were, but some criticism is necesary if you want to make improvements.

@ragethegreat Smallville lasted 10 seasons with more episodes than George Reeves Superman1952-1958 series and Dean Cain's (Lois and Clark) 1993-1997 series combined. It had 218 episodes. George Reeves was 6 years and 104 episodes 2 of 26 and 4 of 13 and Dean Cain's was 104 episodes but 4 seasons of 26 episodes. So combined G.Reeves plus D. Cain would be 208 that's 10 less than Smallville. Superboy 1988-1992 (1/2 hour episodes) was 100 episodes so it was also less than half that of Smallville.

The phantom Zone looked like a sheet of glass, his space ship weird sphere with spikes sticking out, he changed the past while in the comics he couldn't. In Superman 3 there was artificle kryptonite which is esentially the same thing as black kryptonite that created a double of him.Blue kryptonite I don't remember had various forms of kryptonite in comics green, gold, red, crystal.

The movie brought back the elements we loved from the original. I wish Brandon was returning for the Man of Steel , but I think Henry Cavill will be great. Michael Shannon as Zod is also a great casting choice.

No one here (even though they hate this video) get's what Superman Returns was about. It was about Superman's Struggle to fit back into a society now use to his absence; His debate on whether or not to tell his son who he is. Now that Lois has moved on how does he fit in her life? It was a good Superman story; it just was a little late to do a good sequel to Superman II.

@kryptonianboy99 Thank you. :-) Just one note: I watched the development of this movie online. The producers, writers and director all said that they were ignoring Superman III and IV. They felt that those movies were so bad that they should not be part of the cannon of the movies. Returns takes place after II and this is made clear through the shock on Clark's face when he realizes that Lois's son is his son.

To anyone saying "you just wanted an action movie!," let me remind you that Batman Begins, which is considered one of the best superhero movies of all time, is completely devoid of action until the last half of the movie. The reason it was so popular is that it delivered such a strong story and great characters that we were hooked even before he donned the Cape and Cowl. Superman Returns did NOT have a strong story in any way, shape or form. There was nothing interesting, or exciting in it.

The movie sucks because:
1. It should've been a reboot instead of a continuation to the previous superman films.
2. Some of the actor doesn't fit to be in this movie: Kate Bosworth as Lois, and Kevin Spacey as Lex.
3. Storyline of Superman having a kid was stupid, which he didn't have in the comic version.
4. Superman keeps fighting the same villian Lex Luthor in every film. Singer should've have him fight someone who is strong as him such as Brainiac, Metallo, Doomsday or Zod.

Your title said 5 reasons why it sucked, and I only got 4. False advertising. That being said, Superman Returns was a great movie in my opinion. Could there have been more action? Yes. But keep in mind that it had been almost 30 years since we'd seen a Superman movie, the characters had to be reintroduced for a new generation. I think if WB had given Bryan Singer the chance to do a sequel, it would've been amazing.
Oh and just a piece of advice sloopydrew, learn how to count.

Issues that the video poster has with SR are actually elements that distinguish it from the other interpretations and IMO, what made it watchable.
5) Casting critique? Bosworth did fine.
4) Superman's been away for a long time, he misses people. This is a plot point.
3) The girl he loves is with another dude. He feels alone and alienated. Human emotions. Another plot point.

@donatboy I cannot agree, X-men 3 was crap, they killed Cyclops, Juggernaut is mutant, Rogue loses her powers, Magneto does too, and they overemphasize the love relation between Jean and Wolverine

As for spying on Lois Lane, news flash: Women like being watched over by guys they love. Superman wasn't spying for the sake of spying, he was spying to avoid interfering with her life against her will. Good guys do that when in love. It's heroes' compassion.
And the beauty of Superman isn't that he's human, which he isn't, it's that his powers have limits, like humans.

Saw this garbage flick with my wife,my son, and my two cousins. We all fell asleep, i shit you not. A 4:00 pm showing to. When i woke up i went to apologize to my wife next to me and saw her knocked out too.lol. Cant believe singer made this piece of shit. At least x-men 3 was passable and didnt have an emo superman
