We have done the same thing with a supply voltage of 24 volts (DC). This does not work well ! Very bad contacts on the rails. What voltage do you use ?

I find it interesting that nearly the entire run was done while backpoling

The uphill run is all backpoling. The initial run down to the trestle and the segment up to and just after the switch the pole is trailing.
