It is also true that things that are illegal in the usa, aren't illegal in The Netherlands or are being tolerated eventhough they are illegal. Therefor we have percentagewise less 'crime', 'criminals' and people in prison.

However, if you take all those things out of the eqation then percentagewise the USA would still have more people in jail. But that is just my guess, eventhough I reckon my guess would be pretty accurate.

Prisons in the netherlands: Single cell, computer, tv, radio, 3 meals a day, work out, you can get an education, pool tables, table tennis, the cell doors are even open..

Weed isn't actually legalized here in the netherlands. You just won't get arrested for owning weed, and coffee shops are allowed so weed doesn't become an underground drug like all hard drugs.

Ow and we in the netherlands actually have relatively less potsmokers than the USA and the countries that surround us. The "tolerated" (NOT legalized) selling of weed has probably made weed less exciting for the dutch youth.
If the US stops putting harmless potsmokers in jail and stops selling guns to citizens they would lose over half of their prisoners too. It would probably also prevent thousands of (mainly mexican) drugrelated murders each year and you would save a lot of money. But obviously the US thinks thousands of deaths are less bad than smoking a harmless plant. And maybe you should do something about the low incomes and lack of basic social securities. Security tends to keep people from doing bad things

USA: 2 million criminals vs. about 300 million citizens is a crime rate of: 0.667%

Prisons are being closed because criminals hardly get any prisonsentences worth mentioning.
If you beat up a cop you get 20 hours of communityservice. ANd if you beat up an ordinary person you will get a fine.
For armed robbery you will get 16 months, tops.
That's the reason why the cells are empty.

There are simplifications on all sides, America isn't all that bad in all ways and Europe isn't perfect. The issue of fascism and racism is huge, especially in Holland. Old colonial powers always have a lot of immigration, and there are problems with ghettos as well.

Economically I think we aren't doing way worse in Europe than in the US (I do know that the US economy is quite a bit larger than europe's). If the US stops putting harmless potsmokers in jail and stops selling guns to citizens they would lose over half of their prisoners too. It would probably also prevent thousands of (mainly mexican) drugrelated murders each year and you would save a lot of money. But obviously the US thinks thousands of deaths are less bad than smoking a harmless plant. And maybe you should do something about the low incomes and lack of basic social securities. Security tends to keep people from doing bad things
