I finally took my father to this very same field last year...after throwing the ball around a few times, I just broke down crying because of how pure this moment was, and just like he did when I was a kid, he just gave me a big hug, wiped the tears from my eyes & said "Now I think you understand why I love you so much, son." Dad passed away two months later. To me, that place is sacred...It IS heaven.
An Open Letter to the Men of America (composed by Almighty God) will be uploaded at my blog tomorrow. Tell the others. Women are not welcome, as it's not appropriate for them.
this brings back memories of playing catch with my dad. whether it be with a baseball and gloves or even using a football. just the fact we got out there and played catch meant a lot to me. teaching me how to hold and throw the football, to holding and catching the baseball with the glove. even talking with him as we played, hits me. even though we dont play it as much anymore, it makes me happy thinking about it. i love my dad.
I lost my Dad when I was nine years old, so this scene has added significance for me. And yes I cry every time I see it. Perfect film, acting, directing, and James Horner's beautiful score. Is this heaven? Yes it is.
Guaranteed to make me cry every time. Growing up my dad was busy a lot and the moments i craved having with him were spent having a catch in the backyard.
I'm 16 and my Dad is 50 He was no baseball player but i still remember when he thought me how to catch and kick a ball. Just watching this makes me so sad inside and how happy i am to have him. My head hurts from watching this a lot....
This is the ultimate connection between a father and son. Might be the sport, the weather that comes along with playing baseball, or just the pure enjoyment, but man I'll never forget throwing the ball around with my dad in the yard every chance I got.
My Dad is 89 years old. Yesterday, we watched Field of Dreams together. When the movie was over, we looked at each other and we both had tears in our eyes. Field of Dreams is my favorite movie of all times. I have seen it almost 100 times and each time, my eyes well up. Another good father-son film is October Sky. The ending is also a sentimental scene with a father-son connection. I highly recommend it. It also is my top 10 movies.

This is my favorite scene of my favorite movie. Reminds me of all the times my Dad would play catch with me when I was little. This is why Field of Dreams is my favorite movie
This ending almost didn't happen. On the DVD, the director said that in the original script and cut, they never acknowledged the relationship. But the test audiences all screamed that you can't bring all of us on this journey and not have the payoff at the end. Can you imagine how much different that would have been?
I finally visited this site last week to honor my late father who loved this movie. It's just as beautiful in person. No one was there for a catch but I ran the bases! :)
perfect scene really. dam i'm in tears typing this ! the handshake that they don't want to let go, the voices breaking when he asks to play catch and also in his fathers reply, the catch of the ball, the music....
not going to lie .. i cry every time wishing this could happen with me and my father... we never got to play catch after i was 12 cause he got sick .. what i would do to play catch with him today.. R.I.P. Dad love you
BTW - I have been there and it really is a beautiful place. I am glad the farm owners agreed to maintain the property as it was developed for thre movie. The only problem is they moved a power line back across the property and it rund right from 3rd base over shortshop and second and across right center into the corn fields. I dont know how they play there without hitting the wire.
My father passed away several months ago. One of my memories this scene triggers is my dad coming home from the factory on a hot summer night all tired and sweaty. Yet when he saw me waiting for him with two mitts and a ball he would drop his lunch bucket and somehow find the energy to play catch with me for as long as I wanted. Rest in peace, dad.
@jjj1951 I was born to very young parents, so I can't entirely empathize, but my beloved father has begun to say the same thing alot lately; while my brother and are fully-grown adults now, my dad's friends are all fathers to eight or nine-year-olds. My dad speaks fondly of coming home from work at 22 and having enough energy to have a catch or play road hockey with us, which may not have been the case at, say, 45.
This was my grandfathers favorite movie.....he was the first one that really showed me the beauty of baseball....this scene makes me cry and think of him......RIP grandpa...i'll see you again
I've been lucky enough to have a caring father my whole life. My dad's dad unfortunately died at a young age- I was never able to meet him. When watching this movie, it's the only time I've ever seen my father cry.

I was 11 when my father died. We used to play a bit of ball when he was around sometimes on a nice afternoon. When Costner says "Hey dad, wanna have a catch?" I started to tear up because its probably the first thing that I would ask my father if he came out of a cornfield to see me.
My dad died almost 10 years ago when I was 16. We weren't as close as I wish we had been because he was an alcoholic, but when he was sober, he was a great dad. This scene makes me cry every time because it makes me think of him; how I wish things had been different and that he was still with me. :( RIP Dad.
As a middle aged man who played ALOT of baseball when I was younger and had serious estrangement issues with my father, this scene NEVER fails to touch a nerve. What I wouldn't give to have just 5 minutes with my (deceased) dad and be able to say so many things to him that I couldn't say to him while he was alive. "I love you" would be the start of my conversation with him. I miss you, Dad, and am sorry for so many things..!
