I live in the tropics and use a saw as much or more than I do a knife. Saws are a much more useful tool for working bamboo. The smaller tooth saws are the best for this.
Have you ever tried to sharpen one of those? I can't remember what message board I was reading where someone said he uses a chainsaw file to sharpen his folding saw.
I have a SOG Folding Camp Saw (model F10 if you want to look it up). I have not done a lot of work with it but it has been good so far. Does the job well and is light and compact enough to throw in the pack "just in case". Heading off to watch the saw testing vids now, cheers Colin.
Glad you made this vid, because I'm considering adding a pruning type saw blade to my B.O.B. The saw is made in Japan, higher end saw, called a Silky Pocket Boy 170, by Umikogyo Inc. Very sharp, very aggressive teeth, all steel construction with a rubber type grip. Typically high Japanese quality, specifically made to prune rose bushes (we have a hobby rose garden). Weighs 7.45 oz, I bet it could stand in as a bush saw for lots of uses. Good informational vid, Col. I'll post mine soon.
@sabr686 Thanks Sabr, yeah I have heard of the Silky Boy saw, I think it is sold on the Ray Mears site so much be great quality if he recommends it, looking forward to seeing your video of it. My friend and I managed to get out today and do some good testing of the saws, got about 40 mins of footage to edit from that :-)
I like this vid, always wanted to know what the difference was in those type of saws. I probably wouldn't use it for gardening but definitely camping.
@ColinOutdoors np, been using mine for about a year now, it works if your very carefull and not be too heavy handed, just remember you get what you pay for so dont expect it to out perform a laplander cause it wont, but for a "starter saw" you can buy with pocket money its a start
so colin would you prefer a saw like the ones you showed out in the bush over a hatchet or camp axe? If you could only have one or the other in your kit which would you choose?
@mercykill94 Good question my friend, honestly its really hard to decide put I would probably say the saw because I think its more efficient to use :-)
@ColinOutdoors i completely agree with that. i also enjoy folding saws because of they really dont take up much space or weight in my kit, so i get alot of cutting power for a smaller tool but i have found its easier in winter months when my hands are cold to swing an axe rather than use a saw.
@mercykill94 In winter months when you will be needing to cut larger volumes of wood, a larger buck/bow/frame saw would be better and more efficient. That being area dependent. If there is a good amount of snow, one will be likely pulling gear on a sled and using snowshoes while out in the woods so taking larger heavier equipment will be less of an issue.
If your hands are cold in winter, you're doing something wrong with your glove/mitt selections.
@ColinOutdoors Exactly my thoughts on the saw vs axe debate for crosscutting wood. The saw will be much more efficient from a calorie use standpoint. The axe would be better suited to spitting the wood after it has been cut. Conservation of calories is the name of the game when in a survival situation. Looking forward to the saw test. Hopefully, Colin, you will be able to test both green wood and wood that is dead and seasoned.
Collin, great bunch of saws. I have a Bahco and one just like the Fiskars. It is a Gerber and made in Finland. Now the one just like that is made in China. I found that the Gerber(Fiskars) cut faster than my Bahco. Hope that you have a fantastic year, my friend.
Hey Colin. I have both the Bahco and the Gerber (Fiskars). I think they both work great. I think I would give the edge to the Bahco. It has proven to be just a bit more heavy duty. Be well my friend.
...fantastic, your equipment is the best on the web. I know the Laplander from survivalmike and this is a great saw for me, ...my Mannesman just look like a folding saw ; ))) Have a great time and thanks for your cool work Sepp
Best saw for the job intended is going to be a 36" bowsaw. It's most efficient because you are able to use the full throw of your arm. If you look around, you can also get bowsaw blades for dry cutting for when your wood has seasoned. You'll want a log splitter (4-way) and sledge so as to prepare the wood easiest to dry. If you're worried about hauling weight, use a wheelbarrow. Remove the bucket and tie your packs to it. It'll help with moving your logs as well.
@TheBeebopper Thanks for the very interesting ideas my friend. One of my good friends has actually made a take down bow saw, looking forward to seeing that in action.
It has been my experience with these saws that the ones with the smaller teeth work better with hard dry wood and the ones with the bigger longer teeth work better with softer greener wetter woods.
Awesome, cannot wait to see the outcome of the tests! You should make sure you think of all the important criteria before deciding on the winner like, price, size, weight, blade length, blade strength, comfort, balance in hand, durability etc..
Will be interesting to see if the heavier one actually maybe does better because it's got more weight behind it? Can't wait to see.
Being a proud Laplander owner, I'm hoping that comes out on top! :)
That is a great collection of pruning saws you have there. I suspect that if all the blades are equally sharp and of similar blade design, they will all perform about the same. Then it comes down to cost, weight and availability of replacement blades.
If you are going to be sawing up larger amounts of wood, I would suggest a larger saw, such as a Trailblazer type folding buck/bow saw. Even a coarse cut had saw from a hardware store would be good too. Looking forward to the test.
@bwillan Thanks my friend, unfortunately some have been used more than others but I would like to know how they will perform in there current condition, should be a good test :-)

I love the Bahco blades very much. I also have a couple of other saws and they seem to be not as good quality. Glad I was able to finally watch your video! YouTube was playing tricks on me! Cheers!

I use the Fiskars too. For carrying around in a pack etc. it's my absolut favorite: compact and lightweight.
If you don't have to carry the saw a lot or not at all I'd go for a fixed blade handsaw or a bucksaw.
Or you just pack in the blade and build the frame of the saw in the woods.
Greetings, Tim
