I dont know what it is about this song, but when I watch it, I really miss home want to go back to Ireland. It reminds me off my grandfather and grandmother, who have now passed away and their sons, (my uncles), who have sadly passed away far too young.I grow up in the 80's and I know what it means to me to be back then. I think its the video is totally takes me back to my early teens and of course my loved and lost ones who I miss so much. As for the song.....simple irresistable beauty!
Beautiful music made by fantastic artists of our time. In an age when Irish & Scottish Rock was at the forfront of music all over the world and this song in particular with a wee bit of Irish charm thrown in by Clannad. Im from Co.Tyrone born and bred, and this song along with Clannads Harry Game, and I Will Find You(Last of The Mohicans), is the impetemy of what Clannad does for Irish music....Truly beaufitul, yet haunting and spirtual...ERIN GO BRAGH!
This song made me fall in love with Ireland .. One of the places to see on my bucket list .. Also used to listen to this song when i was a kid .. and look out the window .. so smitten with my neighborhood crush ...God she was beautiful ... *sigh*.. Love those memories
Where in Ireland did they made the natureshots? That rough environment is so beautiful. High waves, big hills, rocks at the shoreline. Wow, I really need to go to Ireland...
It doesn't get any better than this! It was my wife and my first dance at our wedding in 2002 and reminds me of when we were boyfriend and girlfriend. Fantastic!
I hope both Mr Paul David Hewson and Máire Ní Bhraonáin will EVER forgive me from slightly changing the lyrics from I don't want to lie in the storms to I AM SICK OF LYING IN THESE STORMS .....It has to be because of what's currently going on in ITALY
za sve s ovih ex-yu prostora..davno bijaše kad sam prvi put čuo ovu pjesmu..na radiju 101...neki noćni sat..nazvao radio odmah...do telefona uvijek stajala olovka i papir..pa zapisao..spelovao clannad...od tada do danas--ljepota koja dira...oh ireland when will you be free...
The beginning of this reminds me of ancient Cornwall. Even the people, alot of them still all have that same celtic look, fairly short, white skin and jet black hair, my great grandad Penberthy did and my mum, lol.
@ramon19031991 I reckon you dislike it because of lack of perception, and the fact you think there's an apostrophe in a plural nullifies anything you'll ever say!
@taffytop "Ross" means a heath or heathland doesn't it? I know it means that in Cornish. The surname Penrose comes from pen-ross, or "the end of the heath"
my dad owns the buiding in the background! :D when they're out in the fieldy bit and u can see a little building, thats my dads! :D it's an old school!
Some very pro Bono comments on here,at least some ppl will maybe agree with my stoned waffle underneath,I could talk music till the proverbial cow hits the sack, but yeah gonna watch it one more time,..peace and love or else!
gotta agree with Viperdude281,Bono's voice back when it was, lets say youthful and passionate, could be haunting, moving, while maintaining that loud pure rock charismatic voice, years of tours etc take thier toll but in his day the likes of liam gallagher could only hope to sound like that guy,Hail Bono, King of the Zoo's :) ( can ya tell I'm a bit stoned:) )
As a lifelong U2 and Clannad fan I remember being chuffed when they did this back in the day. I still consider it be one of Bono's finest vocal performances on record. Must have a look in the attic for my 12" single !

Any Irish born people on here?you lucky things, wish I could go to Donegal, I have loved this group forever! their music speaks to you in a way that defies description, suffice to say that it is awesome.
Being from donegal ,ive been to the location in this video hundreds of times.ive often stood near the water closed my eyes and heard this song. BEAUTIFUL! Donegal is a magical place.i now live in england and miss it terribly...but get back at least twice a year,Clannad are great talent and their songs are haunting.Be back again soon.....
The video was filmed near Gweedore- in a place called the Poisoned Glen beside Mount Errigal. It is probably the most beautiful place in Ireland. The people are beautiful too.
It's amazing how the old music, ages old it seems now, music is so soothing and enjoyed by children. When I was as young as two years old I can remember owning a cd with a mix of Clannad that my mum made for me. Some songs still stir up a feeling of being five again and living in my old house, like some weird reaction in my head. Clannad forever <3
If the Elves of Middle-Earth would exists then they must be probably Celts, because this Irish Celtic music sounds like that it comes straight outta Rivendell or Mirkwood.
Taking my Dexter cattle to the fair soon (they are an Irish breed). Playing Clannad for them now to get them used to non-farm noises. I will be playing the same music while they are at the fair to help calm their nerves Irish music for Irish cattle. Makes sense....
this reminds me of a time in my life when I really didnt want to go on, when my heart and spirit were broken...but I did go on and so glad I did..but even now watching this the tears are flowing again...immensly moving song....just beautiful <3
@mordig I don't think that is necessarily true..there is a herd mentality of course which does exist..but I think the historical problem has been English colonial foreign policy..most people do not have a problem with English people as individuals. At least not this generation.I hope you continue to enjoy our country.
I was listening to this when i was 17 and wondering where i would be in 20 years? well im sat with my 11 year old son who adores what i believe to be bono at his best, the truth from a child "mum what a voice" need i say more?
@123nomak That's really strange...I was 17 first time I heard it (20 years ago) and my nearly 11 year old has just discovered Clannad, this is his favourite song from 'Past Present'!
It's funny you should say that because I'm 17 with my AS exams coming up in a few weeks, listening to this beautiful music wondering where i'm going to go in life. This is just one of those songs that really touches the heart. Hopefully my learn will turn out as possitive as yous =D God I can't imagine myself with a child, lol!
@123nomak I only heard this song a few years ago for the first time, loving the male voice, not realising who it was. It was such a shock to find out it's Bono. Amazing vocals, amazing song. I still get goose-bumps today.
@123nomak Ironically I had the same experience. I've been listening to this song since I was 16 in Cleveland, Ohio and I'm amazed I'm still drawn to it like then. A good piece of art.
@6prereq lol Then I think you better check out the Night and Day video, the cole porter cover u2 did. that was in 1989 and his voice is amazing on that track!!!
1:33 is my favorite part. Bono's voice cracks but doesn't break. Clannad is so amazingl. ENYA was such a great part of Clannnad. IRISH MUSIC ROCKS.!!!! Boomtown Rats, Van Morrison, U2, The Cranberries, Hothouse Flowers, Paddly Reilly,. What are your thoughts my IRISH MUSICAL FRIENDS?
This song saved my life. I would blast it whenever my parent would fight (and boy could they fight!) Then after my father left for good and we had to drop everything to move (AGAIN) this song was the only thing I had to keep me going.
This piece cathes all the spirit of Ireland. The magic of it in the talented voices of Bono and Moira. A jewel! :)

Who mashed the beginning of Caislean Oir with In A Lifetime? It's quite a nice fusion, actually.

Thank you Bono and Enya...

@keewee1969 Enya was a part of Clannad up to 1982, but that's Moya Brennan in the video

Bobo...self-anointed savior of Gaia.
I only wish I could touch the hem of his garment.
