  • I dont know what it is about this song, but when I watch it, I really miss home want to go back to Ireland. It reminds me off my grandfather and grandmother, who have now passed away and their sons, (my uncles), who have sadly passed away far too young.I grow up in the 80's and I know what it means to me to be back then. I think its the video is totally takes me back to my early teens and of course my loved and lost ones who I miss so much. As for the song.....simple irresistable beauty!

  • Always love this song ............

  • my tearrrs are rrrollin' down my cheecks...

  • A mysterious and beautiful song - today's music is rubbish

  • Bono looks and sounds incredible

  • Beautiful music made by fantastic artists of our time. In an age when Irish & Scottish Rock was at the forfront of music all over the world and this song in particular with a wee bit of Irish charm thrown in by Clannad. Im from Co.Tyrone born and bred, and this song along with Clannads Harry Game, and I Will Find You(Last of The Mohicans), is the impetemy of what Clannad does for Irish music....Truly beaufitul, yet haunting and spirtual...ERIN GO BRAGH!

  • This song made me fall in love with Ireland .. One of the places to see on my bucket list .. Also used to listen to this song when i was a kid .. and look out the window .. so smitten with my neighborhood crush ...God she was beautiful ... *sigh*.. Love those memories

  • Real irish song!

  • Great irish song of the great talented irish musicians from the Great Ireland!

  • Where in Ireland did they made the natureshots? That rough environment is so beautiful. High waves, big hills, rocks at the shoreline. Wow, I really need to go to Ireland...

  • @Skaz32225 This video was filmed in Gweedore, County Donegal in the northwest of Ireland :D

  • Clannad & Bono complement one another in this song and thats why its such a beautiful song x

  • @willshewontshe69 Yes thats the truth

  • still don't know why each time I listen to this song I've got the shivers and tears in my eyes....especially from 2.07

  • This song have the sound of my soul....I love this song....Bono has voice of my feelings......of my heart......bellatrix italy

  • just love this song...could put it on repeat forever...

  • I hope both Mr Paul David Hewson and Máire Ní Bhraonáin will EVER forgive me from slightly changing the lyrics from I don't want to lie in the storms to I AM SICK OF LYING IN THESE STORMS .....It has to be because of what's currently going on in ITALY

  • za sve s ovih ex-yu prostora..davno bijaše kad sam prvi put čuo ovu pjesmu..na radiju 101...neki noćni sat..nazvao radio odmah...do telefona uvijek stajala olovka i papir..pa zapisao..spelovao clannad...od tada do danas--ljepota koja dira...oh ireland when will you be free...

  • talk about the soul and the song people. otherwise just fuck off. go raibh maith agat

  • THIS VIDEO AND SONG HAVE SOMETHING SAD BUT SOMETHING MAGIC TO.

  • TRUE! Bono MADE this song!!! His voice is unbelievable! and looks really sexy too ;-)

  • Think I still have the original 12" vinyl hidden away somwhere - toyboy love it too

  • "one" of my fav songs so much pashion at a low budget it rox!!!

  • Clannad and Bono,no, Bono and Clannad .

  • dam Bono looks sexy in this video.

  • The beginning of this reminds me of ancient Cornwall. Even the people, alot of them still all have that same celtic look, fairly short, white skin and jet black hair, my great grandad Penberthy did and my mum, lol.

  • This video particularly the start has extremely inspired the first spark of a good novel I want to write

  • My all time favourite song! Bono's vocals are amazing and its such a haunting and relaxing song.

  • i love this song !!!!!!!

  • how can you dislike this song??

    7 people have no soul

  • @camboy38

    then i am number 8,

    because this suck's

  • @ramon19031991 I reckon you dislike it because of lack of perception, and the fact you think there's an apostrophe in a plural nullifies anything you'll ever say!

  • @jonnolly so...youre point is?

    exactly....nothing!

    reckon this ,,!,,

  • the most beautiful song ever

  • piękna piosenka, chociaż słuchając jej ogarnia mnie smutek...

  • Love the start of this song captures the soul of any of our western peninsulas.... and definately bono's best vocals....

  • yes its west donegal the rosses

  • @taffytop "Ross" means a heath or heathland doesn't it? I know it means that in Cornish. The surname Penrose comes from pen-ross, or "the end of the heath"

  • oh wow i've got 7 thumbs up on my comment! :DDDDD yay me!

  • Fantastica, meravigliosa, epica!

  • Μαγικό...

  • bono was so great, everytime

  • Listened to this song all my adult life..especially in times of stress..makes Monday morninds bearable !

  • I still get chills when he sings ' as the STORM breaks through'.

  • @xicaricardoortega I think I saw you waving from the window :)

  • @xicaricardoortega Your dad's house, put me in a good state of mind, together with this beautiful music.

  • Piekne,z niepowtarzalnym klimatem.....i glos Bono jak dzwon, jeszcze nie 'zajechany' wieloletnim koncertowaniem......

  • All due love and respect to Clannad (this sond made me a fan), but Bono MADE this song. What a beautiful voice, and what great hair! :)

  • Some very pro Bono comments on here,at least some ppl will maybe agree with my stoned waffle underneath,I could talk music till the proverbial cow hits the sack, but yeah gonna watch it one more time,..peace and love or else!

  • gotta agree with Viperdude281,Bono's voice back when it was, lets say youthful and passionate, could be haunting, moving, while maintaining that loud pure rock charismatic voice, years of tours etc take thier toll but in his day the likes of liam gallagher could only hope to sound like that guy,Hail Bono, King of the Zoo's :) ( can ya tell I'm a bit stoned:) )

  • As a lifelong U2 and Clannad fan I remember being chuffed when they did this back in the day. I still consider it be one of Bono's finest vocal performances on record. Must have a look in the attic for my 12" single !

  • Fantastic song. First time heard this on Into the Blue compilation from 1998.

Shame it is not more listened.

  • God Save Ireland.

  • ✿⊱~

  • Bono's voice is fantastic here, such emotion :)

  • The best of the best!!!!!

  • is that a different song at the beginning?

  • @mordig You're right, good ear! It's the begining of another Clannad song, called -Caislean Oir-.

  • @TwoBlumen thank you im off to look for it right now:))

  • Pure magic,could agree more with viperdude281;)

  • just love this , Bono,s voice , is so very young , relaxing mucic

  • MAGIA!!!

  • I feel like a torment... like the wild and dark sea...

  • Ok, now must visit Donegal after watching thus video...

  • lovley song.

  • Hello, i am 27, and i live in Holland. On the Dutch radio this song sometimes is on the playlist, but it's very rear. After all the years i still love this song, Maire Brennan and Bono (U2). Thanks for posting, greetings from The Netherlands!

  • @27redgilles u dont need to be irish ur loved by d dubs...tiochfaidh ar la

  • im so proud to be irish !

  • Is the vocal at the start in there officially? It's not in the album version - in fact, it's a major part of Caislean Óir.

  • Any Irish born people on here?you lucky things, wish I could go to Donegal, I have loved this group forever! their music speaks to you in a way that defies description, suffice to say that it is awesome.

  • @GERMANOPHILE I was born in Gweedore, Donegal!!!! I know the lead singer quite well, Máire is such a sweet person.

  • Bono is outstanding :)

  • Being from donegal ,ive been to the location in this video hundreds of times.ive often stood near the water closed my eyes and heard this song. BEAUTIFUL! Donegal is a magical place.i now live in england and miss it terribly...but get back at least twice a year,Clannad are great talent and their songs are haunting.Be back again soon.....

  • The amazing Bono, never to be overshadowed

  • this is when bono was able to drink and be cool, not the annoying shit you see today.

  • Clannad is an Irish Gaelic word that means Family

  • Miracle from Ireland. Best of those days. Great job by Bono. One of chilean Futuro Fm radio playlist songs back in 1989.

  • Till i heard this song didn't know Bono sang this kinda music ...really lovely

    like it very much ....

  • OMG! BONO LOOKS SO IRISH HERE!

  • This song is one of my favorites. Can't stop to listen it! Very beautiful. Bono is amazing!!!!

  • Bono had the best mullet back then. His voice gives me shivers. I hadn't heard this song or seen the video until recently. LOVE it!!!

  • lovely music to relax to

  • Beautiful. I bought this LP back in the 80s in Monmoth, Wales. Memories

  • One of the best vocals of Bono's career, and that's saying a lot. I've always wondered what kind of music he would make if he made a solo record.

  • The video was filmed near Gweedore- in a place called the Poisoned Glen beside Mount Errigal. It is probably the most beautiful place in Ireland. The people are beautiful too.

  • AN ABSOLUTE WORK OF GENIUS.THANK U GOD FOR "BONO" xxx

  • Ireland

  • BONOs VOICE IS JUST AMAZING :O

  • It's amazing how the old music, ages old it seems now, music is so soothing and enjoyed by children. When I was as young as two years old I can remember owning a cd with a mix of Clannad that my mum made for me. Some songs still stir up a feeling of being five again and living in my old house, like some weird reaction in my head. Clannad forever <3

  • If the Elves of Middle-Earth would exists then they must be probably Celts, because this Irish Celtic music sounds like that it comes straight outta Rivendell or Mirkwood.

  • Taking my Dexter cattle to the fair soon (they are an Irish breed). Playing Clannad for them now to get them used to non-farm noises. I will be playing the same music while they are at the fair to help calm their nerves Irish music for Irish cattle. Makes sense....

  • those 5 people don't have no soul ...... thumps up if you feel same

  • this reminds me of a time in my life when I really didnt want to go on, when my heart and spirit were broken...but I did go on and so glad I did..but even now watching this the tears are flowing again...immensly moving song....just beautiful <3

  • I know the Irish have no real love towards us English and I can understand why, but I love Ireland's music, country and people. Wonderful song

  • @mordig I don't think that is necessarily true..there is a herd mentality of course which does exist..but I think the historical problem has been English colonial foreign policy..most people do not have a problem with English people as individuals. At least not this generation.I hope you continue to enjoy our country.

  • @zonerlust I will do mate, hoping to get over to Ireland in the summer. I find it a wonderful place to just de-stress and relax.

  • Its like a Bipolar's anthem :)

    Its beautiful.

  • Super, po 25 latach kiedy to zafascynowała mnie muzyka Clannad, wciąż do niej wracam.

  • One of my all time top 10 favourite songs. Beautiful, haunting and atmospheric. I'm not a massive fan of Bono but his voice is amazing on this song.

  • pure class..

  • I was listening to this when i was 17 and wondering where i would be in 20 years? well im sat with my 11 year old son who adores what i believe to be bono at his best, the truth from a child "mum what a voice" need i say more?

  • @123nomak That's really strange...I was 17 first time I heard it (20 years ago) and my nearly 11 year old has just discovered Clannad, this is his favourite song from 'Past Present'!

  • @123nomak

sinceramente..no he entendido nada de lo que has dicho...

  • @123nomak

It's funny you should say that because I'm 17 with my AS exams coming up in a few weeks, listening to this beautiful music wondering where i'm going to go in life. This is just one of those songs that really touches the heart. Hopefully my learn will turn out as possitive as yous =D God I can't imagine myself with a child, lol!

  • @123nomak I only heard this song a few years ago for the first time, loving the male voice, not realising who it was. It was such a shock to find out it's Bono. Amazing vocals, amazing song. I still get goose-bumps today.

  • @123nomak Ironically I had the same experience. I've been listening to this song since I was 16 in Cleveland, Ohio and I'm amazed I'm still drawn to it like then. A good piece of art.

  • omg what a song!Amazing melody!one of my favourites.....

  • @123nomak No shit!!! My son has my U2 songs in his iPod & he plays for me all the time......

  • @123nomak

I agree, Bono is at his best in this.

  • una delle piu' belle canzoni che abbia mai sentito.

  • Bono's voice was so amazing in the 80s

  • @viperdude281 It sure was!!! I liked his voice the most from 1980-87

  • @6prereq Yeah I think he lost the magic touch around the early 90s. His voice is still better than most others even present day though.

  • @viperdude281

Hey it's Enya's sis! And Bono! Cool little tune.

  • @6prereq lol Then I think you better check out the Night and Day video, the cole porter cover u2 did. that was in 1989 and his voice is amazing on that track!!!

  • @viperdude281 yea, it was awesome, no hes totally gay.

  • @peterscoop Erm what??

  • Bono at 1:32.... my favorite part...

  • @Rudewomantt me too!...even as massive a U2 fan as I am, this is and will always be my favorite song Bono has ever done.

  • This piece cathes all the spirit of Ireland. The magic of it in the talented voices of Bono and Moira. A jewel! :)

  • Great song, great sounds. I love Enya/ Clannad and Bono.

  • love Bono stoned. Great song and Group

  • slowwwwwwwwww

  • One of the most beautiful songs EVER.

  • And crikey, Moya and Enya look so alike. Didn't notice it before.

  • @job87meh - they would- sisters have that trait....;-)

  • Who mashed the beginning of Caislean Oir with In A Lifetime? It's quite a nice fusion, actually.

  • 1:33 is my favorite part. Bono's voice cracks but doesn't break. Clannad is so amazingl. ENYA was such a great part of Clannnad. IRISH MUSIC ROCKS.!!!! Boomtown Rats, Van Morrison, U2, The Cranberries, Hothouse Flowers, Paddly Reilly,. What are your thoughts my IRISH MUSICAL FRIENDS?

  • This song saved my life. I would blast it whenever my parent would fight (and boy could they fight!) Then after my father left for good and we had to drop everything to move (AGAIN) this song was the only thing I had to keep me going.

    Thank you Bono and Enya...

  • @keewee1969 Enya was a part of Clannad up to 1982, but that's Moya Brennan in the video

  • @Thanksandy OH!!! :S Thanks for clearing that up for me, I'm such a dope. ; )

  • @keewee1969 and I'm such a geek lol:)

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me or does John Terry look the spit of Bono here??

  • @tilly240979 Watch the movie Day of The Dead 1985, Bono plays Captain Rhodes in it. Honest ! ;)

  • Bobo...self-anointed savior of Gaia.

I only wish I could touch the hem of his garment.

  • <3 I love this song. God bless Ireland and everything related to Ireland but especially my irish man <3
