This is such a sad reminder of the greatest man in my life my DAD. I share the same pain all these people had to go through. I search but cant find any answers! What is CJD? I need answers to finally accept it.
This is as basic an explanation as I can offer given the limited space we have.
CJD is a prion disease. Prions are protien chans. All normal protein chains are folded in a particular pattern. Prions fold in an abormal pattern and force normal protein chains to assume a prion abnormal pattern.
Once the normal chain unfolds and refolds like a prion, it stops it's regular function and starts commanding other protein chains to reform. The more normal protein chains are affected, the greater the damage to the brain and nerve tissue.
How long did Kevin live from the time of diagnosis until his death? Did he have the classic form of CJD? Did they know how he acquired it, ie from eating contaminated beef or iatrogenic, or was it just sporadic?

FYI: It is further estimated that up to 30% of Alzheimer's patients are wrongfully diagnosed and actually have a prion disease. It is, however, difficult to conclusively state this given that Alzheimer patients are not autopsied.
Our stats are calculations adjusted to reflect global infection rates based on CDC and Health Canada statistics, complimented by conversations had with various people within the medical community, including those who have made appearances in this film. Nonetheless, I believe this is a conservative figure.

So sad. My Mom had that same lost look and was mute in the end stages of CJD.
