  • oh this is (and you are) amazing!

  • this is so cool! You are awesome!

  • Wow, I'm inspired! Now I want to visit this 'Musical Fence'!

  • I usually do not like this type of music, but you have a fan in me.

  • I watched one music video a day ago on Vh1 and i was hooked. His music has beautiful sounds i have not really ever heard. Im truly shocked that one voice can make beautiful music like that. :)

  • coolest fence in the world?!!!

  • how about flying musical robots for your next inspiration, watch "Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme" on youtube

  • @gotyemusic or anyone for that matter : can you please tell me what microphone he uses?

  • Wow.

  • That was awesome, I love knowing how things are made :) and love the song!!

  • Our generations Beethoven.

  • This is so WOW!

  • this is how REAL music is made. not with samples and computers

  • @musicKluver91 He uses samples and computers in all his music

  • @fosterapamela Yes thats true, but what I meant was that a lot of todays music is MOSTLY made with electronic samples and reused techno beats. It lacks the creativity that gotye and many other great artists before him out into the music making process. He may use samples and what not but how many artists today would think about using a wired fence as inspiration?

  • @musicKluver91 I agree with you completely!

  • I love these documentary video please keep making them!!

  • What a lovely video. Thank you for sharing. :)

  • You MUST release a remix of this song using the intro and outro to this documentary

  • @Barraki148

He's actually thinking about that: scroll back in the comments, to 7 months ago (page 11), where he wrote that he hopes to finish the remix if he finds the time. But I guess he's a bit busy right now :-)

  • @Pulsar89 Haha yeah I saw that ages back, I just want him to release it already lol It sounds so mellow

  • hitting like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like and like again!

  • Nice!

  • Making of Somebody That I Used To Know?

  • I want that over-sized bass!!!

  • glad he released this, i think its his best song he's written

  • Even his documentaries are art.

  • I want to go to there.

  • gotye+cats= me spazzing

  • @countingstars12 Knew 4 sure that he was cool when I saw the cats!!!

  • Why don't other recording artists do videos like these? Hats off for taking the time to make these amazing videos that give such a great insight into your process.

    Talented dude for sure :-)

  • your so natural

  • Love real musicians!

  • I wish this had as much views as "Somebody That I Used To Know" Music Video

  • What a talent.. :O

  • Everything he wanted people to feel in eyes wide open is exactly what I felt. Well done and much love

  • He should release the piano version of this song. It is just too beautiful <3

  • Great Communicator in all its forms. THX Deb

  • Glad your new song gave you so much attention. It´s all really good. Easy to relate to.

  • It's ridonkulous how much I love this song.

  • easily the best song on the album

  • nice :)

  • Does anyone know what Vocal mic he is uses? at 6:01 ?

  • this is documentary is goddamn good !

  • The best

  • Man, the backing vocals. This is the best backing I've ever heard

  • Vocal layering is nutz. Such a great sound altogether. Recording analog instruments is flipping unbelievable, so envious. I love this musician

  • 6:29 gave me major goosebumps!! LOVE his voice

  • Thanks so much for making this! Can you tell us a little about your ultra cool "vocal booth" :) What are those cylinders made of/material to drape them? This song is a sonic achievement!

  • Oh to have all that equipment. Being able to record your own beautiful music on your own time in your favorite place in the world sounds pretty damn good to me.

  • i hate the peaple that dislike this vid theres only 3 but thats still the 3 that i dont think ill like coz i love gotyes songs

and i just think that these things thaat gotye did in this vid were amasing sorry if i spell wrong

  • @2:43

  • geez 6:28 takes me places

  • It's amazing to find out the different pieces of this song and then be able to recognize each one of them in the song like "that's the musical fence or the pedal guitar" I still can't wait for being amazed by such talented and wonderful man as De Backer! I am loving his music ^_^

  • I love that you made this documentary. After watching this, I went fro focusing on the lyrics and front-end musicals and really focused on trying to hear things like the musical fence and the background vocals. There's a lot more to the song than I was originally hearing. Pretty cool stuff!!

  • AWWW what breed are those cats????

  • @hexalzink There is a finished video...

  • This is a beautiful song. I didn't get the loneliness though, personally. I thought the echo and resonating sounds made it feel big and alive and expressive. It seems natural and moving to me. Its neat though that we can experience and respond to the music in such different ways. This is one of my favourite songs so thanks.

  • Polacy przejmujemy ten film :D

  • Its amazing to have the foresight to record a small piece of something on a random trip and then turn it into an amazing song! Your music making process is fascinating!!

  • Great to see true artists and song writers behind the scenes like this. Makes me want to go create something! As an artist (I like to call myself one) using something that I love to do as a way to inspire others is the greatest feeling in the world, and this is an inspiration to me. Thank you!

  • Good gosh man, I loved this video and have so much more respect for this song and him as an artist now. Its interesting seeing that he comes from a percussion background, which may be why im drawn to his music as a drummer.

  • @boomtastic67 I too am impressed with the rhythmic layering in a lot of his music---the guy definitely has a great sense of percussion. There's never just one drum beat, which also makes his songs that much more of a pleasure to listen and move to the 50th time around!

  • Wally we want you in poland!!!

  • you are amazing Wally!

  • the guitar sounds like a whale...

  • "What's the use of keeping all the good things that you've found..to yourself." Thankyou, your music makes me so happy, even the sad songs:) I love hearing how it's made.

  • Your brilliant :)

  • I just love these documentaries. It is so interesting to see your creative process and all the work involved. Thank you for making not only the music, but showing us behind the scenes!

  • Truly amazing and clever

    Such an awesome song!!!!!!!!!!

  • All of this- everything you do is always so inspiring and truly helps me sort of center myself and maintain my sanity. I know that's an awfully large statement, but I go to your videos and I grow so elated watching your art and especially your processes. Sometimes I sit in awe of your talents that I almost can't even believe you're real! Wally, you are incredible and beautiful. Thank you so, so much.

  • Hi Gotye, Do you have any information about the acoustic treatment tubes? I'm looking at building some!

Thanks for sharing!

  • Wally + cats = exploded ovaries.<3

  • wow thanks... very inspiring

  • What a brilliant fence. I'm genuinely considering making one in my backyard now!

  • Thanks. The process is life as art.

  • I can't stop listening to this song. It really transmits the feeling of isolation and inspiration, just what I need in a song. THANKS GOTYE! You are awesome.

  • I found out about gotye by "Somebody I used to know". Great music :)

  • Genius

  • Man, I am loving these. Its lovely to see your creative process Wally and how you pull it all together, very inspiring. I agree with freakypencils31 about the percussions, i'm really digging the intro and outro bits. In fact I can hear a stripped-back version of this song that would be so poignant and just flooring...thats not so say that this version isn't already brilliant. Such an expansive song. <3

  • seriously amazing! my heart melts every time at 6:08

  • This track accomplished its aim, definitely. The first time I heard it, experienced this upswell of emotion- isolation and resignation, but also hope. Was a very large feeling.

Now seeing all that went into it, understand why!

Thank you for sharing this song, and your process! :)

  • This man is just incredible, I'd fall in love with him. Can't wait to see him live, I'll probably be shivering ;)

  • Okay that one person who disliked this is a fucking idiot,

  • oh boy I am in LOVE...what an artist...

  • You are by far the greatest artist/producer of our time!

  • the intro music would make an awesome ringtone

  • i sing with my whole heart along at 6:05

  • Very inspiring, thanks!

  • i am so very jealous of your studio/barn/recording space. Oh, and your cats.

Well done for the number one spot, from the look of this you definitely deserve it.

    So much work & talent!

  • I think you are a phenomenal talent. Watching this clip moved me to the core, as I felt every beat and harmony you produced for the track. I adore your voice and ability to layer resonating sounds throughout your works. Only wish I could meet you, share some time with you and your brilliance and provide some female vocals for a new Gotye track. My parents' country house is also my favourite place to be and sing. We share a strong and true passion for music. You and your music are an inspiration.

  • Can you please release the other version of Eyes wide open, it sounds like an awesome mix of raw sound

  • Play on the mornington peninsula

  • I think anyone who watched this listen eyes wide open after wards

  • I really enjoyed this doco. It was nice to have a brief look into the creative process you went through. I really enjoyed the imagery when you were at the musical fence. So much so, I would love to see an alternative film clip with these truly Australian and somewhat poetic images. Loved it. P.s im new to your music n its not typically my "thing" but I am defiantly now a fan. Thanks!

  • amazing talent!!!

  • Thanks you, this was fascinating.

  • Haven't been this excited about an album coming out for a very long time

  • Man that is cool!

  • Check mark... "like..." and that makes 100 likes and only one dislike... er...should i make the joke or will you?

  • Oh, and I discovered your music on a boutique guitar forum called The Gear Page, an unlikely place to hear your music, someone posted a video, but lots of new fans were made as a result!

  • You have a new fan here! Love your work! Best Aussie music ive heard for a few years, keep it up dude!

  • Thanks for sharing, Walley. It's great to see how people create and where they create it. We love you :)

  • There should be more of these style of documentaries. Thank you Gotye for all your music. You are a true inspiration.

  • Lol this was added on my birthday thats awesome cause it a really good video insight into how to the song process is for real artists good job gotye

  • Mate this is just a fantastic thing to put up, it's a real insight into your process.

  • I've just discovered Gotye through a friend (who sent me the clip for Somebody That You Used to Know) and I'm in love... thank you thank you thank you

  • this is amazing. gotye is rapidly becoming my favorite artist ad i think this one just about did it for me, and I am from Buffalo NY and this guy is from australia but i feel so lucky to have been introduced to this guy.

  • Awe-inspiring stuff. Thanks for sharing :)

  • By the way, where does one find the amazingly intricate percussions at the beginning and end? I'm aware it might just the be some sort of groundwork for Eyes Wide Open but I can't find it anywhere round these parts...

  • @freakypencils31

The intro and outro music for this doco is a remix of Eyes Wide Open I started, trying to use only the sounds I sampled from the Winton Music Fence and the Bush Drumkit. The end bit has some reversed vocals from the track, and also some splashy omnichord

I never finished it, but it worked well for this doco (when I hear it I sometimes think "I like this better than the actual track!"). Hope I'll find the time to turn it into a finished piece and then make available soon ;)

  • @gotyemusic Haha! I find it glorious and puts a whole new meaning to the doc, if I do say so myself. :) Will be waiting for that moment fervently and faithfully, and thank you very much for the reply!

  • @gotyemusic I really hope you finish that remix wally I would buy it 150 times over it sounds magical. You are so gifted my friend it is such an inspiration

  • @gotyemusic gotye!! I love you! im seeing you in chicago on the 3rd of April, you better be there!!!! no excuses!!!

  • @gotyemusic

I must admit that the drum part at the end has a much more unique sound, aswell. The album version works fine, no doubt. But I could imagine the drums from the Winton Music Fence fit even more, regarding the topic of the song. And as described in the documentary, the fence is a part of the original idea of the song. I'd also be very interested in this kind of version. Greets.

  • Wally De Baker - truly the master of the musical Mosaic!

  • Wally De Backer - TRULY the master of the musical mosaic!

  • went to school with this bloke, he was a really nice bloke then, and its really great to see him kicking so much ass and his music is awesome

  • Hey gotye! Amazing song, it's been my ringtone for a couple months now, never get sick of it! Awesome song, winton musical fence, great idea! Love the dream beat and vocals how they were all doubled up. Good job!

  • Awesome, will be showing this to my guitar students!

  • Amazing! do more documentary's, so great to see the process as we all love and are inspired by your music. This was brilliant! :)

  • Deepest making of a tune ive ever seen.. far out... the man

  • Awesome doco, do more of them for your upcoming tracks :)

  • You're so clever Wally! Love it!

  • truly inspirational

  • Radical.

  • Awesome video!

In my opinion, the only thing as good as listening to a great track, is seeing how much effort is put into making it great.

    Keep up the good work!!!

  • Wow...This song hit something in me on first listen...what a fantastic track!

It was great to see how you created it...thanks for sharing this process!

  • Beautiful song by a beautiful man. Thank you Wally.

  • great story and muso

  • I can see there's no piece missing from this puzzle of a song.

  • I don't remember when and how I first came across Gotye's music, specfically "Heart's a Mess" but it was love at first sight and listen. With an incredible voice and beautiful images, it would be hard to not love what we were given. Strange to hear how soft spoken you are in contrast to your amazing voice. Please don't stop making music (unless you start to hate it then by all means). You became an instant favorite of mine, truely. Hope I can still buy new stuff of yours years from now.

  • @jodi87 I remember Googling the lyrics from a trailer of the movie Elvis and Annabelle, because someone defended the casting choice on Blake Lively as Carol Ferris... it spiked my interest mainly because I was bored that day. I found the movie and its plot very nice, but what captivated me most was the music. It was a magical day, the day I discovered Heart's A Mess, and Gotye in the process. The things you can get from searching out the simplest things, huh?
