I have severe keratoconus (had). It is expensive. If you have the cash make sure to include the C3-R (riboflavon + UV light) it strengthens the cornea. You may not need the intac. Funny how the least evasive (a few drops and UV light) is so much more expensive than the more evasive intac. Then again, I could only afford the Intac.
now I understand what happened during my own procedure for intac. I see very blurry but not like an astigmatism blurry anymore. It has been over 6 weeks. I am functioning with a contact lens in the intac eye (right) Don't feel it whatsoever. Will see if there is any improvement in month three (April 2012) I could never even wear soft of hard contacts for longer than a few hours before them rolling up (soft) or popping out (hard) Now I have a 30day in the right eye.
I have Keratoconus and my Doc. told me that by installing intacs the Doc. is committing malpractice. I don't know how true this is but I'm going in for a transplant. My vision is real bad in one eye. They didn't have half the stuff they do now when i was diagnosed to fix my condition.
intacs are great ! i had it done to one of my eye and vision is close to perfect now. no pain during or after the surgery, which is only 15 minutes and was quite alot of fun
@raffies11 GOD I hope you didnt rub your eye!! Rubbing the eye can traumatize the cornea. Never rub your eye. And you should not feel the intac. I do not feel it. Just some pressure every once in a while.
It can't be healed, but with intacs most people with keratoconus can achieve uncorrected vision between 20/20 and 20/40. I'm undergoing this procedure next month, the contacts just can't get my vision passes 20/30. Glasses are far worse (especially my left eye). I'm hoping that with intacs and glasses/contacts I can get my vision to 20/20, it's vital to my career.
actually i do had this operation about a less than a week ago and i didnt felt pain. the only thing i didnt like so much was when they pushed a glass ball (lol i think was that) against my eye to cut eye (i think was like phemtosecond laser)..... for the rest all perfect lol i was walking in milan after 2 hours from the operation.........sooooo dont worry!!!
this is still scary as lasik by touching your eyes with some sharpy tools.. They should come up with something like tablets or pills for improving vision. I don't care if it would take weeks or months to see the maximum result as long as it would work.
i want to know sometin, can u see during the operation or they make u sleep complitly or just de drops, im having this operation and im scared how they will do it and this 1 can it b possible 4 them to make u sleep b4 the operation plz reply thx kc
I had the surgury done yesterday and I am already noticing results. They don't put you to sleep and you are able to see what they are doing, but it doesn't hurt at all. There's only a little discomfort from pressure. I acually found it to be a really interesting experience, it was if I sunk back into my head and could watch them working on my cornea.
if you have access to medline or other web online journal of opthalmology you should find heaps of info, if you don't have online access go to local medical library at uni and you can access journals there.
You will know if you are seeing a keratoconus specialist or not by how much they emphasize the importance of immediately stopping eye rubbing during the day and while sleeping. All keratoconus is influenced by eye rubbing!
The best way to think about INTACS ring segments is that it "moves you back" several years. Don't think of it as a cure but something that improves your condition by moving your corneal shape back in time by 4 - 10 years and then also reinforces the cornea, slowing down future progression. Most important thing though is to STOP eye rubbing during the day and while sleeping. This is the biggest cause of progression.
i have just had the intacs procedure and a week on, i can open my eyes perfectly had a lot of tearing in the eye but my vison is a bit blurred and seem worse than before. How long does it take for perfect vision?
every patient is different and it takes some a few days and others a month or 2 to gain good halo free vision and then the opthalmologist can set about correcting with glasses the difference to give you sharper vision
I have given a green light by dr. rootman. Anyone here know what insurance company might cover this? and if there is an intacts suregery code or something? I need to see what insurance company might cover some of the $8,000 =/
It's 45 minutes by eye. It wan't fun...but it's not so long when you compare to the lenth of life...so good luck for your surgery. Yes, you'll see all the process...but it's different from this video. The feeling is very different. Don't be afraid. I'm very happy to have done it. It's a bad moment but that's just a day in the life...
I'm having this surgery in about two months.. ouchhh it looks painfull, I had a corneal transplant for my left eye and now im trying to fix my right eye. but i noticed this person didn't blink once....
Do not get intacts it is a 50/50 surgery it might help you but there is only a 50% chance. I did not helped me. Get a cornea transplant. This procedure is still in its early stages (experimental). If you did already get this surgery and it worked than you are lucky if it did not work and your doctor recommends adjusting the intacs in a different position than dont do it and get a cornea transplant.
another question....how/what is your vision now? did you get the procedure in both eyes? and do u have to to still wear soft lenses in them? How long is this supposed to last? Thanks in advance
I did the surgery in one eye. I still wear glasses. I'll go to the optometrist next 04th june...so I'll know exactly my vision at this date. The last time my vision was improved...I hope it will be the same this time !
Hi. i did the surgery and they put Keraring. Please tell me how much time will it take to improve the vision. And one more thing Were you having color fringes before the surgery? if yes then did they improve after the surgery?...
o im from toronto too..ok i wanna ask u sum questions .. vich ones betterr intacs or cornea transplant n vich one hurts more n how much do dey cost for both eyes ?? n cani get it dun before the las stage ??
heyyy mann my keratoconus is on de middle stage my doctor's tellin me i'l av to get a cornea transplant after 5 10 20 yrs my fukinn concatcs hurt a lott sumtimess ...n ders no other treatment other den dat den wus this Intacc ???
Ask to your doctor to have a topography of your eye and send to my surgeon in Toronto(I can give you name and telephone and @ of him if you want. I 'll be able to tell you if Intacs is possible or not in your case.
Hi. Good luck for your surgery on Saturday. You'll feel pain during the surgery (45 minutes by eye) but that's ok. It's not long if you compare to the lenght of life ! After the surgery, you won't feel any pain. But, be careful to do exactly all your surgeon tells you. If not, you could have infections...and pain.
Choose intacs if it's possible in your case (show your topography to your doctor). If not, choose cornea transplant if you have NO CHOICE...I can give you the name of my doctor in Canada if you want
oh wow, this is the procedure my brother will have to go through tomorrow. He just told me a while ago about his diagnosis and I am really sad for him. However I am hopeful that this procedure will help him, especually after reading the comments below. Thanks for the video, all that's left is prayer, comfort, and hope:)
Man, that is cool. I had an intac put in my left eye around 5 months ago. Now I see how it is done! My vision has improved alot, but I get a lot of irritation and I get foreign body sensation. I hope my eye settles. please God let it work.
I done this surgery in May 2007 at Toronto (Canada). It is a success ! My vision has improved a lot and I never had irritation or sensation of foreign thing... I've glasses with a prism and it helps me a lot for astigmatism.
It's my surgeon (Dr Rootman) who made the video with his camera when he did the surgery and he gave me a copy ! It's really different when we have the surgery and when we watch it in the video, isn't it !
It's not lasik surgery but INTACS surgery. It's different. For me, it improved a lot my vision. My optmometrist was skeptic at the beginning but now he is very impressed by the improvement of my vision. I'm very happy to heve done this surgery

Intacs are great - but give it some time to judge the final result.
It took 2 years for me to see perfect now. its like braces on teeth, the cornea reshaping process takes time to mature.
the operation itself was painless and exciting and i never felt like i had anything inside the eye afterwards.

Hi, I see with this movie that keratocone can be healed. My doctor didn t tell me this.
I suppose that a keratocone is stable with time, if the operation is a medecal choice? I thought the opposite.
