  • I absolutely adore this song! Makes me cry everytime I hear it.

Gotta be honest, I prefer Meatloaf's version. I generally prefer Meatloaf's music and have been listening to him since I was wee little. I think he puts more passion and emotion into this, with that fantastic voice of his. That's not to say that Tom Waits' version is bad and no disrespect to him what so ever for writing this absolute masterpiece! Just personal preference is all. I also happen to have a boy "Martha" :) memories! <3

  • martha was a good old girl!!

  • I love this! Not as good as Waits, but really really great.

  • I prefer this version, to be honest.

  • Holy crap. It's like he's aspiring to William Shatner.

  • This is the worst thing ever. It's bad and Meat Loaf should feel bad.

  • i heard this version again for the first time in some years; wonderful - the words are fabulous and the passion and emotion pours from the speakers; my favourite song - brings tears

  • It makes me cry. Wonderfull version.

  • nah try again meatloaf.

  • If I've heard this version before the original from Tom I wouldn't be impressed at all.

  • terrible version

  • meat loaf, you no longer have any talent in my eyes for redoing this song,

  • @NERDkingHERE O.o

PLEASE tell me you're being sarcastic!

  • Jim Steinman was actually the one that suggested that Meat Loaf cover this song.

  • This is a very nice version of this song. Meatloaf gives an opera worthy quality to what may, quite well, be my favorite Tom Waits song. Great Job with so much emotion. I never thought I could like this song by anyone but Tom, but Meatloaf changed my opinion on that.

  • me gusta ..

  • Hate to make this a three way argument but sometime back about 1975 Bette Midler sang this song from the female perspective on Saturday Night Live and that version would be my pick for best version of this song. The audio of that performance is here on Youtube but not the original video. At one time you could see it on Bette's official website, but I'm not sure it's still there. Anyway....look it up and let the debate continue.

  • Not bad as covers go, but I wonder if Meatloaf is really a Waits' fan or if this cover was just on the advice of his label or producer?

  • @mitch26 Might be both. Also remember what Welcome to the Neighborhood was, and at what track this appeared on the listing: a concept album, and it was near the end of the CD (the couple since split up and went living their own lives. They still care for one another, but they know they were never meant to be together.

Jeff Bova's talents come in play again. Only two instruments, and Bova's keyboards are one of them (other is a piano). Sounds like more instruments, right? Yeah, Bova's damn good.

  • Meatloaf well not a fan of his records but I have a lot of time for him doing this song and of course being in FIGHT CLUB

  • @lunapark010 this makes no sense

  • A Beautiful song - Meat Loaf sings superbly!

  • Meat's okay, nice he tipped the hat to Tom, but that's all it is.

  • I'm sorry, but tom waits his version (original version) touches me deeply.

    But this just doesn't...

But indeen it's a tribute and pays homage to Tom Waits which is a good thing.

Now I'm going to listen to Tom again :)

  • I believe that every man with no exception has one true Martha.

  • Meat always sings like he means it. I always love to hear him sing. When I met him at an album signing, I thanked him for "Heaven Can Wait" (cuz it was a song that saved me many times). He told me to listen to "Martha" on the new album. And I have to say this.... God bless Meatloaf for his talent. Cuz it sure helped me get thru this myriad of life. I love Meatloaf, in a way that is pure, and Steinman too. Both of those men got me thru hard times.

  • Not on a high horse, we all just have different views on what is good to us. I think Meat Loaf is doing a bad job. His voice stutters too much. If he could just sing it straight it would be fine.

  • @DrunkenPiano It's supposed to with this song, you have to FEEL the hurt not just down to your bones, not to your sould but right on down to the atoms that make up you and everything around you.

  • havin just heard the tom waits version have to say meats is well better sung with emotion, timing is well better just better all round tom is shit i would never listen to that version ever again long live meat loaf :p love your voice like an angel singing to me

  • @carolsomerset Meatloaf has a good a voice, but he overdoes it on the emotion instead of letting the words and the melody bring the emotion out of him. His voice is meant for spectacle, whereas, I feel, Waits' is more intimate. A performance doesn't have to be over-the-top to be emotionally charged.

  • @nathancoppens we all entitled to our opinion s mine not changed meat rocks i dont like toms but then since i wont listen to it and will stick to meatloaf i guess it dont matter he not over the top just a better performer than tom but as i said we all have our opinions and they cant always agree :)

  • @carolsomerset yes and yours is wrong

  • @nocab1984 I agree.

  • @carolsomerset You have a wrong definition of the word emotion, im my opinion. Meatloaf puts a lot of timbre in the song, he dresses is up very nice.

Tom waits on the other hand, strips the entire song down to the bone, to the raw pain of the subject. And that is emotion right there, that is why i think Tom's version is better.

  • Having just heard the Tom Waits version, I have to agree with jubjub2112 - Toms version is the better one, but Meatloaf's version certainly holds it's own. An excellent cover and a great homage to the great Tom Waits.

  • Can we rename meatloaf "butcher"???

  • TOM WAITS WROTE THIS AND I LIKE HIS MORE

  • This version isn't as sombre, it's more of an epic version of the song.

I still adore this song, but Tom Waits wrote it for himself and his very distinct voice. Meatloaf's version, though similar musically, is a fantastic coner vocally, but I prefer Tom Waits' version.

  • Seriously, your all really comparing Tom Wait's weak, frail voice to Meat Loaf's, one of the greatest singers in the world, and your reasons being these. Nostalgia,....... and.....er, oh wait, its just nostalgia. Seriously, Tom wrote an awesome song but he cant carry a note to save his life.!

  • @torchwood11 funny you would describe Tom Wait's voice as "weak, frail". I would say it's more like "raw, growling" :)

  • @Silaros22 I can sort of see where your coming from, but I would still argue that Meatloaf, vocally, is a better singer then Waits. Waits just cant hit the notes in his version wheres Meat Loaf can

  • very bad cover

  • I'm sorry but I couldn't keep listening to this song. I think he just sings it so terribly he ruins the song for me. If he'd just stop trembling his voice then i bet this would be a much better version.

  • meatloaf covered Tom Waits WTF?? I shall have to reassess my life view....

  • i love meatloaf but they fucked this up! !!

  • @ Peggie18 what a stinky smelly bitch you must be. your a vile and disgusting person.

  • @battlestarnomore

    Peggie wants you..badly...lol

  • This is my favorite Meatloaf song ever. I like the Tom Waits original as well. I think the problem is that people have a hard time understanding that each is sung in a dintinct style. Both are mournful, emotional pleas to the past. I just happen to be a huge Meatloaf fan so I like his better. That doesn't automatically make it better however. To each his own.

  • the man's got taste.

  • Okay . . . I'm not a huge Meatloaf fan . . . but damn people!! The man is honoring the great Tom Waits!! Of course no other can touch Tom singing this song . . . but this is a heartfelt tribute to Waits . . . and he is singing like he means it . . . like it or not . . . I have so much respect for artists who pay homage to their heroes and influences. Good on you Meatloaf! Hats off to you! The rest of you, get off your pretentious, musical high horses.

  • @jubjub2112 Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't know why some people feel it's some kind of sin to admit that a cover can be great too. I think the original song is wonderful, and this is a really nice tribute to it, sang wholehearted way. So just can quote jubjub, get off your high horses and don't be hating, in case you don't like it, do not listen to it, easy as that.

  • @mecse86 :-)

  • @jubjub2112 i have not heard the original and i think this version is excellent.

  • @jubjub2112 i have not heard the original and i think this version is excellent. he has a strong voice but is able to inject the 'sorrow'. this album is one of his best

  • @alexwallis01 You have to hear the original . . . it will change your life! It is on the album Closing Time by Tom Waits . . . a perfect album . . . and keep in mind . . . Waits was in his early 20s when he wrote that album!! Unbelievable!! He was born with the soul of an ancient!

  • @jubjub2112 try Freddie White, does a good job on Martha

  • @carlow65 Will do Carlow65! Thanks for the tip!

  • @jubjub2112 well said <3 im glad people like you can speak their minds and put people in their place , covers can be just as good as the originals some folk just cant see that . x

  • @MissKirstyJohnstonxx No problem! I don't think this version can hold a candle to Waits' original, but he sings with passion-- gotta appreciate that! When I hear this version I think "Nice tribute, good on you Meatloaf!" But every time I hear the original . . . it cuts me to my soul and bares my heart naked. I cannot listen to it in a public area, because it brings tears to my eyes every time. Most of us have our "Martha" .... those who do not, well, maybe they haven't lived long enough yet...

  • @jubjub2112 HA HA Meatloaf is a fucking disgrace as a Performer

  • @OutlawMCC Still getting comments on my post from more than a year ago . . . interesting! OutlawMCC . . . then . . . why are you here?? Is this some twisted sado-masochistic pleasure for you? Listening to artists you don't like? Sounds like a fine use of your time . . . well done! Well done!

  • @jubjub2112 NO Its to spread the Word this Fucking Professional Thief who charges to Public for Live performances is GONE! LIVE he cant sing a fucking Note and is a disgrace ! And dont Well done me you fucking retard !

  • @OutlawMCC Welllllllllllllllllllllllll Done!!

  • @jubjub2112 Cheers Man

  • @OutlawMCC ;-)

  • @OutlawMCC You mad, bro?

Try to actually make a complete sentence next time you try to convey a thought!

  • @darkpowrjd Ha Ha , never get mad on the Internet Mate, but get me down the local pub , watch out 8)

  • @OutlawMCC Umm...so you were drunk when you were commenting? That might explain some things!

Oh, and this version kicks ass! Just so you know.

  • @darkpowrjd Stone Cold Sobre from memory, the guy is a thief performing Live these Days, I stand by what I said, but I guess not calling you a retard, I will take that back lol

  • @OutlawMCC 2006 was a bad year for him on live shows, it was evident that the cyst he had was taking its toll, but you could tell on the 3 Bats Live show that he was still trying to give it everything he had. It would be different if he had a "I don't give a shit" attitude about live shows, but you know you're getting his best ever, even if he doesn't perform up to his high as hell standards on that night.

You also should give Hell In A Handbasket a chance, though! Trust me!

  • we likke meatloaf

  • Yeah Martha meatloaf you fat whore lol inside joke between me and my boyfriend and pretty much the rest of our school :] lol she sooooo fat the vortex dont let her suck you in!!!

  • @peggie18

Got anything to type that actually makes sense ?

    If not..don't bother..Moron.

  • @theyorkshirewhites I second that

  • Comment removed

  • this is awful, TOM WAITS FOREVER!!!!But at least he tried.

  • i like meatloaf but he has ruined this wonderful song ! . stick to what you know man this is aweful.

  • I liked this song, it shows Meat can do other styles of songs as well as hard rock.

  • Der Song ist wunderbar gefühlvoll von meatloaf gesungen - wunderbar ***

  • Tom Waits sounds like a man and meatloaf sounds like a whiny bitch

  • Not bad, but nobody does it close to Tom Waits.

  • this song reminds me of my mate from newyears just gone its well funny

  • i like both versions, by preference i preffer this one, But thats my opinion, i respect people for their opinions, and i don't hate them for their opinions, but i do think theyre fucking stupid commenting a video saying they dont like it but they sit there and watch/listen, yeah real smart!

  • i wish meatloaf wouldnt do that "choked" with emotion voice.

  • Meat Loaf singt diesen song so gefühlvoll, einfach super. Gefällt mir viel besser als von Tom Waits.

  • tom waits version is by far better

  • i like this so alto i dont know why but it is good

  • to my old love audry, who stood beside me through hell and back............i am sorry..........

  • Toms grittiness makes his version a lot better in my opinion, plus he actually wrote this song. Meatloaf gargles balls.

  • Just another style of singing..

I like Meat so i liek this song!

  • Shut up you Fucking Mug >>>>>>

MEATLOAF IS THE FUCKING MAN AND ALWAYS WILL BE

WHO THE HELL IS TOM GRITTINESS HAS HE SOLD OVER 50 MILLION RECORDS

  • Well I feel the opposite, so we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't know anybody who thinks Meatloaf is remotely cool except you and maybe a shit load of people who are to embarassed it. I would put him in the same category as Celine Dion, great voice, shit music.

  • Ah, a cunt who measures success by units sold.

  • I totally agree with you. I had Closing Time for ages and only listened to this song today, but Tom's is the best version by far. The piano on his version is so so so amazing.

  • Yeah man for sure, Tom Waits is a true artist, he's up there with Bob Dylan in my opinion.

  • Great song; thanks for uploading!

  • I love this song, and this album is my 2nd favourite by him, behind bat out of hell 2 x

  • I LOVE this album......prob my fav besides the 3 bats...this song is awesome:):)

  • love this song.

    thanks

  • 'Welcome to the neighbourhood' - good album - edit out 'I'd lie for you' and 'If this is the last kiss'; and its a very enjoyable listen.

  • V nice song... forgotten album glad i have it =)

  • hi, tanx, very much...

  • i thought this was horrible compared to Tom Waits... his voice is too "clean" ^^'

  • i love this song and meat loaf sings it perfect i have heard tom walts version but it dose not apeal to me but meat loaf pulls it off!

    thegunacer

  • tom waits wrote this..he owns it

  • i heard to tom waits martha song now and it's clear, that the song fits much much better to tom waits as to meat loaf, but i find it a nice gesture of meat loaf to cover the song from great tom waits.

  • i see that the song isn't by meat loaf in original. so i don't have to wonder, because the lyrics aren't like the ones, meat loaf normally sings. the meat loaf lyrics are all a little more epic than the tom waits lyrics, so the song doesn't really fit to meat, but it's a very cool song anyway.

  • I love this version better then the Tom Waits one. Even though the song is more tailor made for Tom Waits voice, this is good too.

  • good cover but not as good as tim buckley's cover, he has a much more powerful, versatile voice. however both covers aren't anything on waits' original, waits' voice is fantastic

  • that was beautiful...

  • A very good song and although I do love Meatloaf I have to admit I prefer the original version sung by Tom Waits.

  • love this song 2 pieces

  • this is 1 of my fav songs of meatloaf he is bril

  • been lookin for this song for a while. I heard the original version first and enjoyed it. This version is great too. Good story to the song aswell.
