yeah, he turned his back on his music and his fans for a long time and had to do what made him happy. Thankfully after his son brought a guitar into the house and when nobody was looking or listening he played it and soon discovered he need not give up everything that made him who he was and has now struck a balance in his life that includes music. And the Cat came back.
Regarding the Salman Rushdie fatwah, what he said was, yes it is under Islamic law to issue a fatwah against enemies of the faith. That is all. He was reiterating a belief of the faith. He never said that Salman Rushdie should be killed, he only agreed that that was a statement that was compliant to Islamic law. Take that as you will, and I dont agree, but Cat never outright advocated a murder.

The truth is easy to find right here on youtube. Type in Cat Stevens and Salman Rushdie. You will find BBC videos of Yusef agreeing that Salman Rushdie should be killed. in fact, he debates whether he would continue eating dinner or kill him were he to see him in a restaurant. He says it would depend on his mood. And that were he in an Islamatic country and ordered to by a judge, he would kill Rushdie. He can deny it now but the evidence exists. Sorry, but this is not a peace and love man.

Then again, there are no people who follow this commandment today. The Crusades interpreted the Christian bible to say to go out and kill all who did not covert to Christianity. Sadly, today the Muslim radicals interprate the Quran very literally, making all of Islam look murderous and evil. It all depends on how you look at things.

Regarding the Salman Rushdie fatwah, what he said was, yes it is under Islamic law to issue a fatwah against enemies of the faith. That is all. He was reiterating a belief of the faith. He never said that Salman Rushdie should be killed, he only agreed that that was a statement that was compliant to Islamic law. Take that as you will, and I dont agree, but Cat never outright advocated a murder.

he's just the messenger. awesome music. cannot believe he was banned from the U.S. doesn't make sense. but i guess it is what it is. sometimes things are just wrong. we either accept them or protest. i'd rather just sick back and enjoy such an awesome singer with such personality on stage..such feeling..so much enthusiasm. reminds me of janis joplin with his music. he "feels" it. and he's awesome doing it. and yes for all you out there i like janis as well. she was a frigging wonderful creature!

If he was born muslim, OK! But converting to islam is something I cannot understand or accept especially considering he's half Cypriot! Cyprus has suffered so much from muslim occupations throughout history! He knew what's islam all about, spreading the "faith" through fire and ax!!!

Judging someone on their religion in a negative way is so bigoted, and people that do that are empty and full of hate that really, if it takes all of their lives, they will never be able to understand the kindness and peaceful message sent through music such as this artist attempted to do. You don't like it? don't watch! and don't attempt to bring a famous peaceful artist down to your level- he is respected too much. You are not welcome here!!!!

To everyone who equates this beautiful man with the hateful factions of Islam - you are really imbeciles who know nothing about who this gifted songwriter really is. He has forever been a wonderful philanthopist giving his time and money to construct schools and do good throughout the world. He has always been a peaceful soul.

@bhm1304 I have to agree with you...You can't judge everyone by a few...That's been done repetedly throughout history...You'd think humans would learn from judging all by a few...It's not right..Yusuf Islam is one of the most peaceful, loving people on the planet..He will always be very much loved by all who take the time to learn about him and his beliefs...and especially his music...I will always <3 this man...He's been my guide since I was 7, but, especially for the last 40 yrs..:) Later!

When I was young I was going to run away to London to marry Cat...waaaah, it didn't happen. He got married to a lady named Fawzia and they had six kids, one which died in infancy from heart problems. He is a grandpa now. I wonder how many people has dreamed of being "Mrs. Georgiou."
"Oh Very Young" is one of my favorites, so much so that I asked my family to play it at my funeral...morbid but ture.
