firstly, that's not a cello lol... secondly, yes, i think virtuosity should NEVER be on top when you make music... it's a DIVA syndrome of which suffer the most people on earth XXI century... but well, he's astonishing... i admire his fingers and bow perhaps... though i still think he wants to be a rockstar, not a musician indeed
why play this, when there is so much nice viol music still to be played! one cannot beat the violin in this music... however, you're a great musician!
Viol will get more well known with this kind of playing, there are only little audiences who have understanding of more "finer" viol sound. Actually that instrument doesen't sound like viol what i think is advantageous for most viol music. It seems to be advantageous for the way of playing it, but not for the most of viola da gamba music in the first place. We have to separate "purism" where people search all their lives for right answers (never finding those) from this, more emancipated way.
It seems to me we are heading back to before the early music movement took place, when performers were trying to make the viol for what it isn't, and played it like an instrument it isn't capable of being. In short, stop pretending to be a cello!
you should write the "Defense Du Violoncelle Contre Les Entreprises Du Violon Et Les Pretentions De la Basse de Viol", and perhaps get a place in history for your psychorigid thoughts.
Yes I have thought about that, but there aren't enough original cellists around to merit such work. They all imitate other great players..like Bylsma?..
