@kazakhstanmkj Hey in Ireland we do tests in Primary school it is not until we are in Secondary School (High School) that we sit public exams. @pokekid716 Hey, college was much cheaper before the Feds took over. The worst part is that college kids think that all these grants and aid is actually there to help them. I used to think so too, but its NOT. Colleges increase their tuitions to match with the increased student aid appropriated by the Feds, resulting in no net gain for the student. And sometimes even a minus as the student is left overburdened with debt. Watch this video. It explains it really nicely
Finland here: 0 € per year for tuition. And we also get up to 298 € per month for student allowance plus up to 200 € per month in rent support if you live in a rented apartment (our schools very rarely provide accommodation).
Oh, just one more thing: you only get to keep the money from the state if you advance in your studies. So no, it's not a good option for lazy bums. You do actually have to study or else you have to pay it back.
1500 euro a year in the Netherlands, but the students also get 90 to 250 euro per month (depending if you live with your parents or not) plus up to 250 euros monthly depending of your parents income.
I pay 1200 euro a year, soon to be 0 euro a year(thank god for the greens! and students protesting against the 600 per semester) for studying at one of the best universities in the field of history(my major). At the same time I get 600 euro every month from the state to study and live etc, and only have to repay half of what i get, and only have to start repayin 5 years after i have my degree and a real job. and all of that interest free. I am studying in Germany. The US could do this too!
Norway also has free University. Or almost free, the semester tuition is about 700 crowns which is about 120 US dollars. You pay for your own books, but other than that, it is practically free. Also, you get about 700 dollars a month from the state for dorm costs. So all you really pay is your own food and your vanity expenses. You get tailored study programmes and brilliant teachers.
I live like a king, and will still only have a fraction of a US student's dept. We pity the American fool.
@olekristor The best thing you can do is make sure your country does NOT follow the example of the fascist states of amerika. Many neofascist politicians in Europe are trying to make Europe mirror the US. Please be ready to take up arms to prevent that. I am. You should be too. This country is collapsing in such a way that it will never recover.
@olekristor Norway has a lot of oil - don't forget that. But I agree with you what concerns the bad idea of lacking involvement of government in our lives; what's the case in america.
Why do people always use these videos as an opportunity to boast? It's one thing to explain why how your country does it and why it's more efficient but no one likes a braggart.
how about putting a chunk of that tax income to manufacturing trade schools. a core problem in our economy is we don't "make stuff" anymore. workers are too expensive compared to overseas competitors. Higher taxes/health costs/education costs on the working class mean they need higher salaries to have a decent lifestyle (decent, not lucrative). By training "makers" for free, our workforce is cheaper + workers aren't saddled with loans, so they spend money instead of paying interest. win win
I remember years ago when the Dividends Tax was fought and it was argued "Well people are being taxed twice on that money - once when they get paid from work, and again when they invest it". While I sort of see and get that argument for some, it can also be said that that's a separate income all together and you're making new money, so it's not a double tax.
Considering we now have bullshit like High Frequency Trading where nothing of value is added, shit needs to get taxed at least 5%.
TYT is starting to get a bit to close to a socialist show (when it comes to financial matters for my tastes). This hate towards the rich is getting a bit much IMO.
If you make it free it lowers the value of education for everyone else. Education should only be for those who would appreciate it and are willing to work hard for it. Nobody else. Merit-based systems are the only acceptable way to evaluate the problem fairly. (take the smartest kids and those who choose not to work hard can f' off)
@Owner46 Making it free doesn't even remotely change your idea. I'm in charge of people that didn't like school. SO, they didn't value getting an education and didn't work towards it.
It would devalue education if we did like we did with health care - kept the costs on students, but forced EVERYONE to go to college whether they want to or not. THEN we devalue it.
no one is saying "tax wall street and give everyone A's". education *is* work. getting a degree requires effort. I see what you're saying, that the value of having a Bach degree with diminish a little because a lot more people will have them, but they *did* earn them.
the thing is, your argument lacks a connection between working hard to learn and having money to pay for the opportunity. I know people who have $ but don't care about school, and others who bust ass but can't pay.
@NikEgUy101 Its not so much that, its that for every time you try and move forward, at least half of you go braindead and try and pull everyone back into the dark ages. But maybe one day it'll get better
Considering how much a college education costs, it's stupid to give it away to everybody, especially stupid ass stoners who don't care to go to school and could give a shit about doing well in school. Give it to people who actually care and try.
why is it that these ppl keeping coming back to complaining that money is the root problem for everything , yet they are still 100$% in favor of the idea of money and it's use for the system? they're close but need that extra bit of realization
Re: title. EXCELLENT idea! Pure genius. An educated civilization is a much more prosperous civilization. Billionaires are parasites anyway; all of the money trading making money off of money doesn't actually produce anything or contribute to society at all. Its about damn times these gluttonously wealthy pigs contribute something to society.
@bamboo4tameshigiri I am in my final year of my bachelor's degree. I moved back to Canada for the affordable schools. My sister is still in the states and pays over $30,000 a year in tuition. She is not getting any better of an education.
Sweden is tutuition free, + you get PAID study. Yes, you read that right. The government hands out free money for us if we study, which mostly covers costs for books etc.. We can also get a beneficial loan which, combined with the free money, is enough to cover living expenses such as rent etc.. So we don't even have to work while studying.
This is bullshit. Education is not the "great equalizer." All that's happening now is that 50 years ago you needed a bachelors for a top managerial spot. Today, you need a bachelors to start flipping burgers at McDonalds or be a bank teller.
They mentioned the GI bill. That's the only reason my grandfather went to College, and became a teacher. He recently celebrated his ninetieth birthday which was attended by more than 100 people, all telling him how much he had changed their lives for the better. If we can do the same thing for our people now so that in so many years anyone else can have that kind of impact, I think it's a no-brainer. Do it.
I don't mind having student pay for a portion of their tuition fees - you've got to have some skin in the game to take it seriously. But tuitions are way out of line with students' ability to pay, so unless you come from a wealthy family, you can't afford it.
Which is EXACTLY what the plutocrats have in mind. They don't want an educated citizenry, it's too difficult to control.
I think America takes pride in not being as corrupt as African countries and giving up the number one spots to China, India, Sweden, Norway and countless other countries.
The beauty of it is Americans will continue voting the wrong people into powerful positions.
I think America takes pride in not being as corrupt as African countries and giving up the number one spots to China, India, Sweden, Norway and countless other countries.
If we want to make education cheaper then we NEED to close down colleges and not make loans available to everyone and anyone that wants it. We are in a college bubble right now. Very similar to what happened during the housing bubble. Cut demand (students going to college) and as long as supply remains fair (which ti will,we have a ton of colleges), tuition costs will fall. NOT everyone should be in or is made for college.
@goldenshots close down college, so your answer is to cut supply.
*ahem* did you at least go to college to get those brilliant idea ?
not everyone is made for college, but you don't force them to go, your solution is to force them to NOT go. effectively cutting those that could do college but don't have the financial to.
Education is also an investment for the country. see the recent study about the GI bill. Paid itself 7 times just by increasing people value, making better salary.
@moestietabarnak If you cut down demand, naturally supply will be cut too b/c they have no1 fudning them. However, some colleges would remain, enough to educate the amount we need as a country.
And who said I was forcing any1 NOT to go? When did I ever say that. Quote me please. I just said its not for every1.
GI stats r skewed. When the GI's went to college ,less then 40% of pop. went to college. Now its about 3/4th! Big ddifference.
@moestietabarnak lol obviously u misunderstood. If college tuitions keep going up, we r going to need to close down colleges b/c nobody is going to be able to attend. To get into 100K debt and not have something to bak that up is spelled DISASTER. Go look at housing bubble, same thing happened. People who bought homes w/o jobs or with low paying jobs pushed house prices up. What happened when they couldnt pay? POP. House prices come down.
Cenk/Ana have to disagree. Not only is this NOT a free market/capitalistic idea, a Fin. transaction tax will KILL liquidity in the markets. what is liquidty? Well, go look, may 5,2010. Thats what happens when liquidity dries up (long story why it dried up then). Liquidity helps stabilize prices. The firms that make liquidity in the stock market can flee to other countries. They will. Its not the banks making the liquidty btw, its HFT firms.
@goldenshots let them flee, OTHER will take their place and happily pay the tax while raking up profit.
Like the golden boy would lose a $100 millions jobs to not pay $50 millions in taxes, but this is way less (also why they haven't quit when the tax was 92% in the 50s)
@moestietabarnak Others WONT take their places. This is not something that is not portable. HFT firms make their living by just flipping stock all day. They can do that in the european/asian markets.
And lol at the use of ur stats. that 92% is the INCOME tax for INDIVIDUALS. Not corporate. Corporate Taxes as a Percentage of Federal Revenue was 24 ish %....Now its under 9%.
I would MUCH rather close loopholes and tax havens/breaks then put a tax on a bussiness action they do.
@goldenshots my 92% example was just to point out that when the tax were that high, the usa was going on just well. Still hear about this period as the golden year.. so the #^#@ fearmongering of "dont tax the rich or the will move elsewhere" ,mean nothing. they can move, other will do the jobs. Stop buckling under treat, call the bluffs.
Actually, they make you a coward, you are willing to accept unfairness and corruption for fear of them leaving. when you should say "pay your share or leave!
@moestietabarnak lmfao you obviously have no clue how taxes work. Im for cutting tax loopholes/breaks which would increase a shitload of revenue for the US. That is fine, corporations wont leave the US for that. but when u start putting a TAX on their Business actions (which btw, already has a SEC tax). & Ur talking about something totally different, the income tax which is a whole other arugment. Taxing their business actions isnt fair. Does mcdonalds get taxed when each hamburger is made? no
@goldenshots geez, what a straw man..how about mcdonald's burger get taxed every times they are sold ?
look, selling/trading stock for company liquidity is ok. but swapping stock all day just to make the market and skim the profit without adding ANY value to the stock, is not wealth creation, it's wealth confiscation.
And that a big part of what they're doing. Even oil prices get inflated by around 30% by speculator. Didn't you hear the complain about oil price?
@moestietabarnak "ut swapping stock all day just to make the market " .... Thats liquidity buddy. Now, if u asked me, should we tax them at 35% w/o any loopholes? I say yes. But to tax their business transaction will kill liquidity.
And that oil speculation is b/c of bank speculation and margin requirements being low. That has NOTHING to do with making liquidity and the HFT firms.
And Cenk's wrong about the bankers fleeing. Two thirds of British Hedge Funds went direclty to eitgher Switzerland or Luxembourg as they are tax havens. I know Hedge funds and Banks are different, but thats a HUUUUGE chunk of the financial industry gone, just like that. Still, I rekckon we're better off without them.
we fight in Croatia 4 free education, still about 50% are not paying any tuition. The reason we blocked our universities (twice) is because the government tried to implement the ''American'' way ... a guess what ... WE ARE WINNING ! We stooped the new law and the rise of tuition.
How depressing. What's more discouraging than when you see the answer, and somebody else is paid to move it out of your reach? Our country has become a kitschy door mat saying: "God bless this mess." What a joke.
@computerjero as well as the gov paying for all tuition fees, you can also receive a monthly grant which varies in size according to your family's wealth i.e. the poorer you are, the more money you receive, so i guess you could use that for books. for transport, providing that you keep all receipts you can get all your money paid back at the end of the year. rent however i agree you will have to pay for, unless you live with family.
Here in Britain; England, Wales and N. Ireland are going to be paying up to £9,000 a year, however, Scotland gets University for free. Hopefully if Scotland leaves the UK in the 2015 reform, that money saved will go further towards our NHS and education sectors here.
@capnrory i never knew about either. i thought unis just got a subsidy from central government paid for by general income tax. it sucks we are learning the wrong lessons from the US
I was able to get a free tuition thanks to the HOPE scholarship but now the Republicans in the state are destroying the HOPE which was the only good thing about Georgia. Thanks to HOPE I was able to save money and buy a house thanks to not having to go in debt for school.
Ana you are waaaay behind on the news. Universities in England just had the cap raised to 9k. And we international students are playing 12k+ next year
@Thongger Calm down. I'm in the US (regretfully) and my tuition at a public college is 20k a year. Also, here we have braindead students who can't think for themselves. At least England had those student riots.
@LittleBigB talking about those student riots... TYT did a story a while back about those riots in response to the fee increases, so it is kinda funny how TYT forgot about that bit of news. but yes, I do know US fees are very expensive too, my sister studied in the US too so my family and I know the situation you guys face.
@moviedude22 That's good because just about the only way one can afford a decent education in the fascist states of amerika, if you're not born wealthy, is to join the military and LITERALLY kill for it.
I study at a university in Denmark for free and I have a few cash to put aside from the money I receive from the government, just because I'm a student. We have the highest social mobility in the world - if you're smart or work hard you'll make it.

Finland here: 0 € per year for tuition. And we also get up to 298 € per month for student allowance plus up to 200 € per month in rent support if you live in a rented apartment (our schools very rarely provide accommodation).
Tuuliska 8 months ago

We pity the American fool.

how about putting a chunk of that tax income to manufacturing trade schools. a core problem in our economy is we don't "make stuff" anymore. workers are too expensive compared to overseas competitors. Higher taxes/health costs/education costs on the working class mean they need higher salaries to have a decent lifestyle (decent, not lucrative). By training "makers" for free, our workforce is cheaper + workers aren't saddled with loans, so they spend money instead of paying interest. win win
dreamcoyote 9 months ago
I remember years ago when the Dividends Tax was fought and it was argued "Well people are being taxed twice on that money - once when they get paid from work, and again when they invest it". While I sort of see and get that argument for some, it can also be said that that's a separate income all together and you're making new money, so it's not a double tax.
Considering we now have bullshit like High Frequency Trading where nothing of value is added, shit needs to get taxed at least 5%.

If you make it free it lowers the value of education for everyone else. Education should only be for those who would appreciate it and are willing to work hard for it. Nobody else. Merit-based systems are the only acceptable way to evaluate the problem fairly. (take the smartest kids and those who choose not to work hard can f' off)
Owner46 9 months ago
@Owner46 All the so-called "merit-based system" does is favor those with the ability to pay, not the smartest.

@ismeme I feel like that at times and most times. The first university that came in mind is STANFORD.

kazakhstanmkj 6 months ago
@Owner46 Making it free doesn't even remotely change your idea. I'm in charge of people that didn't like school. SO, they didn't value getting an education and didn't work towards it.
It would devalue education if we did like we did with health care - kept the costs on students, but forced EVERYONE to go to college whether they want to or not. THEN we devalue it.
DisturbedHavok 9 months ago
@Owner46
no one is saying "tax wall street and give everyone A's". education *is* work. getting a degree requires effort.

NOT everyone should be in or is made for college.
goldenshots 9 months ago
@goldenshots close down college, so your answer is to cut supply.
*ahem* did you at least go to college to get those brilliant idea ?
not everyone is made for college, but you don't force them to go, your solution is to force them to NOT go. effectively cutting those that could do college but don't have the financial to.
Education is also an investment for the country. see the recent study about the GI bill. Paid itself 7 times just by increasing people value, making better salary.
moestietabarnak 9 months ago
@moestietabarnak If you cut down demand, naturally supply will be cut too b/c they have no1 fudning them. However, some colleges would remain, enough to educate the amount we need as a country.
And who said I was forcing any1 NOT to go? When did I ever say that. Quote me please. I just said its not for every1.
GI stats r skewed. When the GI's went to college ,less then 40% of pop. went to college. Now its about 3/4th! Big ddifference.
goldenshots 9 months ago
@goldenshots "If we want to make education cheaper then we NEED to close down colleges " already back pedalling?
moestietabarnak 9 months ago
@moestietabarnak lol obviously u misunderstood. If college tuitions keep going up, we r going to need to close down colleges b/c nobody is going to be able to attend. To get into 100K debt and not have something to bak that up is spelled DISASTER. Go look at housing bubble, same thing happened. People who bought homes w/o jobs or with low paying jobs pushed house prices up. What happened when they couldnt pay? POP. House prices come down.
goldenshots 9 months ago
Cenk/Ana have to disagree. Not only is this NOT a free market/capitalistic idea, a Fin. transaction tax will KILL liquidity in the markets. what is liquidty? Well, go look, may 5,2010. Thats what happens when liquidity dries up (long story why it dried up then). Liquidity helps stabilize prices. The firms that make liquidity in the stock market can flee to other countries. They will. Its not the banks making the liquidty btw, its HFT firms.
goldenshots 9 months ago
@goldenshots let them flee, OTHER will take their place and happily pay the tax while raking up profit.
Like the golden boy would lose a $100 millions jobs to not pay $50 millions in taxes, but this is way less (also why they haven't quit when the tax was 92% in the 50s)
moestietabarnak 9 months ago
@moestietabarnak Others WONT take their places. This is not something that is not portable. HFT firms make their living by just flipping stock all day. They can do that in the european/asian markets.
And lol at the use of ur stats. that 92% is the INCOME tax for INDIVIDUALS. Not corporate. Corporate Taxes as a Percentage of Federal Revenue was 24 ish %....Now its under 9%.
I would MUCH rather close loopholes and tax havens/breaks then put a tax on a bussiness action they do.
goldenshots 9 months ago
@goldenshots my 92% example was just to point out that when the tax were that high, the usa was going on just well. Still hear about this period as the golden year.. so the #^#@ fearmongering of "dont tax the rich or the will move elsewhere" ,mean nothing. they can move, other will do the jobs. Stop buckling under treat, call the bluffs.
Actually, they make you a coward, you are willing to accept unfairness and corruption for fear of them leaving. when you should say "pay your share or leave!
moestietabarnak 9 months ago
@moestietabarnak lmfao you obviously have no clue how taxes work. Im for cutting tax loopholes/breaks which would increase a shitload of revenue for the US. That is fine, corporations wont leave the US for that. but when u start putting a TAX on their Business actions (which btw, already has a SEC tax). & Ur talking about something totally different, the income tax which is a whole other arugment. Taxing their business actions isnt fair. Does mcdonalds get taxed when each hamburger is made? no
goldenshots 9 months ago
@goldenshots geez, what a straw man..how about mcdonald's burger get taxed every times they are sold ?
look, selling/trading stock for company liquidity is ok. but swapping stock all day just to make the market and skim the profit without adding ANY value to the stock, is not wealth creation, it's wealth confiscation.
And that a big part of what they're doing. Even oil prices get inflated by around 30% by speculator. Didn't you hear the complain about oil price?
moestietabarnak 9 months ago
@moestietabarnak "ut swapping stock all day just to make the market " .... Thats liquidity buddy. Now, if u asked me, should we tax them at 35% w/o any loopholes? I say yes. But to tax their business transaction will kill liquidity.
And that oil speculation is b/c of bank speculation and margin requirements being low. That has NOTHING to do with making liquidity and the HFT firms.
goldenshots 9 months ago
And Cenk's wrong about the bankers fleeing. Two thirds of British Hedge Funds went direclty to eitgher Switzerland or Luxembourg as they are tax havens. I know Hedge funds and Banks are different, but thats a HUUUUGE chunk of the financial industry gone, just like that. Still, I rekckon we're better off without them.
