@GanjaStuPipesUp never pass negative judgement on something you don't understand. I take it you probably don't like free improv/jazz either. When you listen to something like this, imagine the instruments are having a conversation with each other, probably the best way I can describe it. There's no such thing as good and bad music, just what you like and what you don't.... and Justin Bieber :)
I picked up the reference to this from the special edition ''Imagine" DVD. I must say, it isn't quite as bad as I thought it might be. I never realised before that John and Yoko were putting out this wierd seperate music while the Beatles were still very much afloat, thought it came shortly afterward.
Strange indeed. The Beatles were rather good in my opinion, but John Lennon turned very weird during these later years if you ask me. His wife was kind of the same. Perhaps this song and album is meant to just be simple and relaxing, I don't know, but personally, I don't see the big meaning behind it.
Oh yeah, and I pretty much nearly threw up when I saw the album cover.
When this album came out in 1968 I had to ask for it - it was Underneath the counter !!! Even though there was a brown sleeve covering the real cover !!
man what a dissapointment. fuck john lennon and yoko for selling this to the public. i can picture a guy in 1969 ready to listen to a great lennon album and then hearing this garbage.
Good to hear Lennon experimental jamming out of drugs. It's logical that it sounds crazy If you think this is make by a man who practically is responsable for music as we know today, what can you do when you have nothing else to?
This wasn't make for you. You don't have to understand it or you can understand it in your way that's the point. Fluxus music the art and the beauty of it merge from one it comes as a subjective meaning when every single person put a reality into it. This can be all you want and at the same time this is not music.
it's ok. everyones just saying they like it because John Lennon was involved, though. if you all liked it so much, why don't you all listen to other music like it? Smegma might be a good place to start, they were formed just a short time after this. Also, look into John Cage.
All this is is the soundtrack of john and yoko's first forbidden night together. She came over when cynthia was gone and they made tapes just for fun. Kids do this kind of thing all the time. The only difference is that John and Yoko put a picture of themselves naked on it and everybody got outraged. I really just wish people didn't take it so seriously. No They aren't songs, it's music. And no, it isn't a painting or a film or a sculpture, it's just art.
For me, this album is the strangest and best one for a man from the world's best known band ever! Since I have heard it from a friend's Apple vinyl record for the first time, I have got the chills and some confusion with several experimental electronic music artists as the French Philips' experimental electronic music artist Pierre Henry and some tunes from Perry-Kingsley. So, I have also noticed the thin paper album cover with a "man and woman" brown-white design covered the hard cover sleeve!
To me this is much like Jackson Pollock it's trying to change music, and in that respect it is admirable. However the music like Pollock's work just isn't that impressive, sure the technique/purpose behind it is interesting, but that still doesn't equate to good music or art. I mean groups like Nickleback and Limp Bizkit, which are terrible, have more listen-able moments.
@SuperTrooper107 Says who? You? You have every right, but the bottom line is this: Bad music is music I hate, and good music is music that I like. In that regard only are you correct. I actually prefer something like this to the drivel currently making rotation on radio stations that cater to more herd sensibilities.
@SuperTrooper107 I happen to love Jackson Pollocks work and I believe that this shouldn't be considered 'music' or be put in a genre. It's something all its own. I find it amazing and strange and scary and beautiful all at once. Oh, and Nickleback and Limp Bizkit shouldn't even be compared to this work of art.
basically it sounds like John and Yoko were locked in a room with various musical instruments, drugs and recording eqipment for a day and what we're hearing are the highlights of what occurred that day.
this accually works, you can hear tape machines being turned on and stuff. it makes sense. you should read wikipedia on it then the websights that show you the timings and point out what is going on...

if lennon is still alive today he would've continued this project and probably made collab records w/ merzbow and played a big role in the japanese noise movement wtf. Beatles is connected with history of noise. Top that rolling stones. Also this is close to noise NOT music, sub genre to sound collage.

People say it is beautiful because it is the guitarist from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Who I do maintain as the second greatest guitarist in the world)...but come on, if this was heard with no history of who it was by, the majority of people wonuldn't even listen to the whole song, no to dissrespect avant-garde music, and its...
im sorry, but this is just great!nice sound collage with a pastoral feel at times.cool manipulations of the piano.don't know why so many people dislike this?
I think, being a weird sound collage from the side of John that made "Revolution 9", this is the only avant garde album of theirs with merit. The others were too gimmicky - silences, repeating their names, heartbeats, etc.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Double Fantasy is better than...any McCartney solo album, and Harrison solo album, and arguably Let it Be...you know what else? Yoko's songs are as good if not better than John's on that album - - You're my beautiful boy, Kiss Kiss Kiss...come on people!

It is amazing how this record can come from a man who has written some of the most popular songs of the 20th century.
There is nothing remarkable or clever, nothing light, nothing sweet, nothing fine, nothing crafted and nothing good. It's just noises. And not just plain noises - annoying noises. Annoyingly annoying noises.
True that. it's the very same attitude he had putting Yoko Ono on two of his albums...Sometime in New York and Double Fantasy. Incredible songs written and sung by him but I feel it was selfish sticking her on those. Yes, so far what I am hearing is annoying. I can't make it all the way through this is garbage. Love John Lennon though.
To me, this is just a recording session of 2 very strange people. I had this sessions when i was 5 years old, just screaming around and doing shit, then listening to it. C'mon, this has nothing to do with the art the Beatles produced, this is just sad. A very, very sad musical ending of John Lennon.
"Du, nervst noch mehr als Yoko Ono, gehst mir ewig auf den Sack, du haust nicht ab aus meiner Wohnung, hast einen beschissenen Musikgeschmack!
Well, I don't know what do you think about yourself, but the thing is that some silly comments in german can't piss me off. You don't have to think this is art, but the truth about this is that it was revolutionary.
Víš proč tu všichni píšou anglicky? Si voy a comentar todo en otro idioma, da igual si en inglés, en espanol o en checo, polaco, ruso o lo que sea, nadie se va a enterar.
This is not a silly comment, it is only a quotation from a german song. It must be german, because the sense would suffer the translation. And why should anyone piss you off? There must be more opinions than one.
the end of john lennon? this was still during the beatles..no one can forget imagine and he had a successful career after the beatles..john had a lot of demons, he was very strange, but he was also a genius
"ballad of john & yoko", "across the universe,""because," "come together," revoluition," "julia," "dear prudence," "i'm so tired," "instant karma," "give peace a chance," "imagine," "mind games," "whatever gets you thru the night," "woman is nigger of the world," "working class hero," "mother," "isolation," et al.
all done in the 12 years after JC suggests lennon met his sad ending musically. the sad ending was the unfinished body of work - the unfu\inished life. long live john n yoko....
Hey, you don't have to like it, or even think it's art.
Just realize that one man's trash is another man's treasure, and what's just a clip of random noises to you may be something very meaningful or even just something enjoyable to someone else.
I'll probably get eight million thumbs down for this comment, but I don't hate it. I think it's interesting especially because they spent the night recording it before they first had sex.
"It isn't a trend, and it isn't a trick. It's just two of God's children, looking and sounding much as they did when they were born, only a little older." John and Yoko.
People always say, "All the best bands were on drugs." If you ask me, all the worst bands are on drugs too. I mean, you'd have to be seriously high as a kite to think this was worth releasing.
Still, the Turner Prize is popular, and that's like the art version of this (if you haven't heard of the Turner Prize, past winners of it include two guys who entered themselves as art, Tracey Emin's unmade bed, and a shed made from an old boat that was made from a shed).
I doubt it's the drugs. It's the fame and expectations pressing down. John kinda left town towards the end of his life and drugs probably played a part, but not exclusively. This is a respectful comment as I love everyone!
p.s
I'm not saying I like this either. It's defective and I'm not sure why you'd listen to it unless you're completely ennebriated with love for the Beatles/John Lennon...which is definitely hard to get over. It hurts to say someone you love is bad, you know.
Also, I completely agree with you on the Turner Prize. It's like...the shock effect. You know? Like, it's shocking so it's good.
Like that one french artist who just had models roll around in paint and then roll around on the canvas, then sold it for millions. How is that art? There's no skill or thought or meaning to it...
..is this just two people titting about making sounds? And then releasing it because people will buy it, because their names are on it? As interesting and wonderful as I find John and Yoko, this is not something you can listen to and enjoy, surely?
It was never released, my guess is they were just fucking around trying to see what they came up. But yeah, I wouldn't ever listen to this if it were released.
I did get released! There was a furore because the album cover shows John and Yoko standing together naked. Apprently, after they made this album they made love for the first time. For some reason, that makes this record very sweet...but it's still not good to listen to XD
this album screams "Im famus, i can sell you trash, and you will buy it!!!

@MadtMcNeall
This is not a silly comment, it is only a quotation from a german song. It must be german, because the sense would suffer the translation. And why should anyone piss you off? There must be more opinions than one.

I think this is great!! It was totally cutting edge in it's day. Totally revolutionary.

I'll probably get eight million thumbs down for this comment, but I don't hate it. I think it's interesting especially because they spent the night recording it before they first had sex.

It's not bad it's pretty cool, but Yoko's screams aren't. Does someone have side two on here? If not, can someone post it?

"It isn't a trend, and it isn't a trick. It's just two of God's children, looking and sounding much as they did when they were born, only a little older." John and Yoko.

John & Yoko's 3 Unfinished Music albums remind us how influential the Beatles were, both as a group and individual.

Pedgerow 3 years ago 2
I doubt it's the drugs. It's the fame and expectations pressing down. John kinda left town towards the end of his life and drugs probably played a part, but not exclusively. This is a respectful comment as I love everyone!
p.s
I'm not saying I like this either. It's defective and I'm not sure why you'd listen to it unless you're completely ennebriated with love for the Beatles/John Lennon...which is definitely hard to get over. It hurts to say someone you love is bad, you know.
infirmarybluesism 3 years ago
Also, I completely agree with you on the Turner Prize. It's like...the shock effect. You know? Like, it's shocking so it's good.
Like that one french artist who just had models roll around in paint and then roll around on the canvas, then sold it for millions. How is that art? There's no skill or thought or meaning to it...

Most people who buy art go for interesting over impressive.

it did get releasd and if anyone out there as got the original lp ( the naked cover ) it is worth a LOT of money :-) liam from liverpool
liam6177 3 years ago 2
What I wonder is...
..is this just two people titting about making sounds? And then releasing it because people will buy it, because their names are on it? As interesting and wonderful as I find John and Yoko, this is not something you can listen to and enjoy, surely?
myHEADisAtv 3 years ago
It was never released, my guess is they were just fucking around trying to see what they came up. But yeah, I wouldn't ever listen to this if it were released.
LulzAtYourFace 3 years ago
I did get released! There was a furore because the album cover shows John and Yoko standing together naked. Apprently, after they made this album they made love for the first time. For some reason, that makes this record very sweet...but it's still not good to listen to XD
