Frankly I wonder if the human animal has nearly as much feelings as the non-human animals. I wonder that more and more. Humans can learn a lot from the other animals on this planet
This is a beautiful tribute to a very special chimpanzee. I was honored to meet Dorothy when she was alive: a beautiful soul and respected leader. (I also love Sarah Vaughan). I wanted to correct someone below who said all chimpanzees in sanctuaries are sterilized. At Sanaga-Yong and others, the females are given birth control pills. There is still the possibility of reintroduction someday, so sterilization is not a good option. Thanks to Planned Parenthood who make generous donations!
I HATE that She had to Spend 25 yrs Chained. BUT I am so Happy she Was able to Be Happy with other Chimps for 8 Years, She deserved to Have that life for her entire life.
all animals deserve better care and treatment and should be bought up along with their own families like humans its sad seperating them at a very young age. hope people learn as soon asn
Anyone who believes that animals don't feel emotions are blind, blind, blind. Your pets love you and miss you when they're gone, don't they? They express great joy whenever you come home. They grieve whenever other members or pets of the household suddenly leave whether they're moving or they've passed on... All animals have feelings, I'm sure.
@salvolondon Chimps that come to those sanctuaries are automatically sterilized. While they are provided a good home, it's not considered "ideal" for them to be in captivity, so they don't want them bringing chimps into the world in that condition, when enough of them come in to the sanctuary under bad circumstances as it is.
@Monarchos steralized? how? i hope they do vasectomies to males and not castration and ovariectomy,Chimps are very similar in physiology with humans, removing the gonads from a chimp would cause the same deleterious effects (such as osteoporosys ) that would cause in humans. Chimps are not cats, hope people realize that.To castrate a chimp would be as bad as unethical as castrate a man.
I believe this video is inaccurate. Some of those are photos of Toto who was chained by the neck in a S. American circus and rescued by Animal Defenders Int'l, an organization I worked for. He is still alive today at the Sanago-Yong center.
What made humans think that we're the only ones that can feel joy, worried, sadness, pain, loneliness, etc? Besides chimps, elephants also show great signs of emotion, but I truly believe that ALL living things are capable of and DO have feelings.
What a great video. The only chance chimps have is people seeing how much like us they are. Laws are inadequate - there's got to be a moral reason for people to defend them and if this doesn't invoke such feeligns, I don't know what will
This was on the news a few weeks back, what a great story and shows how closely related humans and chimpanzee are, everything we thought were unique in humans have totally been shattered by our cousins. Great Video.
My heart is broken. Seeing Dorothy chained to the ground, and then seeing those chimps lined up and looking so sad, has me in tears. Animals are beautiful, and they are not respected and treated by most people as they deserve to be. Thank you for posting this touching video.
Thanks Jug. Your's is the only intelligent comment on this page.
Humans have been too removed, for too long, from the farm. They have come to believe only what is put in front of their very narrow field of 'vision.' Dogs, cats, birds, pigs, cows, elephants, dolphins, etc., etc.....all demonstrate emotion. Chimps are not unique among animals.
@juggep80 this is the most discriminating comment ever ! what's wrong with mental handicapped ??? my son is a mental handicapped and he does know that animals do have emotions. You are probably the one who doesnt understant the meaning of such pictures
Thank God for the people that saw a need and helped instead of turning their heads. Thank-you for sharing this with me. God is so good. This does make you cry if you only had a heart. 5 stars : )
P.S. I don't think many people think animals can't grieve that this point. It's clear in higher level social intellect animals like Elephants too that grieving does happen.

Notice that they keep the "grieving relatives" behind metal fencing, rather than allow them direct contact with the body.
That's to prevent them from eating their dearly beloved's corpse.

I just returned from the sanctuary recently and for anyone who is interested Dorothy's adopted son Bouboule is now the alpha male of the group.

so how do we justify chaining them up, hunting them, experimenting on them, and referring to them as "pets" or "assets" that we own?

Oh dear!
I actually cried! :(
I'm glad that at the end of the day, she was surrounded by her group. she was well loved. she was happy and that is what is important.
Imagine if she died while she was still chained...the people who chained would probably just throw her somewhere.
I salute all organizations who rescue animals! Know that by this video your efforts are not wasted!

Chimpanzees are awesome, they should NEVER be placed in chains the way Dorothy was.
We must be kind to animals of all species...
I am grateful for all the sanctuaries that are saving the Chimps, as well as the dog and cat shelters.
Thank you for sharing such a special story...
