This game contradicts itself sometimes. It encourages exploration, but punishes you out of nowhere for exploring. The spike trap in the previous episode is a good example of that. There's no indication at all that you will be harmed there, but they do it anyway. This potentially redirects the player from the exploratory behavior that it wishes to encourage.
I really love this LP of yours, DC (I'm up to video #62 now). I gave up the game after beating 5 of the bosses and collecting a bunch of swag because I got too sick of the difficulty.
The reason? I never found the Grail. I never even had a clue that there was a way to warp around. I walked everywhere, carefully conserving my health so as to leave safely each time. I thought it's what you had to do.
I feel like largest dumbass ever. A hardcore dumbass, perhaps, but dumbass none the less. :(
DC's voice oddly sounds like Eddie, the Heart of Gold on-board computer from "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (the great BBC series, of course, not the crappy movie).
MSX wasn't a Japan only system, it was popular in Europe too, and I think South America... So it was more like a non-US system, even though it was mostly developed my Microsoft.
I had to look at this part to figure out where to get the Grail was just this minute,as I'd spent quite some time wandering aimlessly around the Guidance Gate! Thanks DC!
The MSX was a jpn only compsystem so if he doesnt know that metalgear was on that first then dont be so assholike that you say "Any Metal Gear fn should know that." ffs
I finally decided to try La Mulana. I sucked so much, your first video was incredible. I even forgot about the down arrow that was beneath the hell-temple zone into the other block puzzles. I kept thinking the water zone was where I was supposed to go...! Oy.
Thanks for doing this, I'll use it if I need it :3
For the record, does the game or guide say how to use the grail? If so, I feel stupid for missing it, because when I got it, I was like "Yay!...now what?"
Anywho, nice video. You arent the best player, but I doubt Im better. You're also entertaining and informative, which is all good in a Let's Play. To me a Lets play is watching an average gamer play through a game and have fun doing it, and thats you, so...yay!
And just think. The Guidance Gate is the easiest area in the game. It just gets harder from here. La-Mulana definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the top ten most difficult games of all time.

@charemthecharmeleon I don't blame you. It isn't obvious what is does.

@charemthecharmeleon It says what the grail does right in the manual.

the shurikens don't seem that weak, they broke those jars in one hit, that's stronger than that whip.

Other than a Action Platformer with Rpg elements would this game be considered a Retro Game?
MetalZeroFXXX 3 years ago
I would consider it a retro game, despite its being created in 2005. It's maddeningly difficult like games of the past, I'll tell you that.
AND4H 3 years ago 2
It's a "Retraux" game.
Meaning, it's actually pretty new, just made to look retro. :)
SparkyLurkdragon 2 years ago 7
I think Retro Clone is a less silly and just as accurate term for games like this. ^_^
lordofnightmares 2 years ago
"Retro" doesn't mean "old", it means copying old style. La-Mulana is retro.

Actually, wasn't the first metal gear game for the MSX? Any Metal Gear fn should know that.

I save DC from tech support!
To save, equip the game master thingie and talk to zelpod, that's it xD Or is there some other issue?

I downloaded the game and everything works fine. Except I can't play the normal music. I can only play the crappy Midi version. Anyone know why?
abcdefghijklmnopqrmm 3 years ago
The music IS midi (correct me if I'm wrong), and it awesome even if it is midi

What do you mean you don't speak Crazy skeleton? You're Deceased Crab! You're already dead! Crazy Skeleton should be a second-language to you.
Or wait...maybe it's because you have an exoskeleton? o.o
