  • @ethnosify Well I am only 1/16th Cherokee, and I know that doesnt make me "native" but I still have native american heritage. And her mother was Cherokee, so that makes Rita Coolidge half Cherokee. How can I tell? Her features are a dead give away. Most people ask me if I'm Cherokee because they can tell it by how I look. I dont claim it, because mine is distant, but her mom was Cherokee, and she has a right to claim that heritage. Also, she is a real lady. What tribe do you claim to be?

  • @VASINGER That statement is not correct. Coolidge said her father is a *fullblooded* Cherokee and her mother a mix of Scotch and Cherokee. However, her family is not legally *Cherokee* as they do not belong to any of the 3 recognized Cherokee tribes because her family does not meet the proper criteria.

  • @Gentilejedi No, her father is white. He was a minister and married a Cherokee woman. Yes, I do know that you could be full blooded Cherokee and not be considered that unless you register. Many Native Americans get upset if anyone tries to claim the least bit of heritage for fear they would take away some of the government money an grants they recieve. I have heritage, but I am not legal, and I would never even consider because I dont want government benefits for such a small amount

  • @VASINGER walela.com - Visit her website and tell her what she is. According to her, her father is Cherokee and her mother is Scotch and Cherokee.

  • @Gentilejedi Okay, I guess I misread it. In the liner notes on one album I thought I had read that her father was a minister of Scotch Irish descent and her mother was a full blooded Cherokee. Either way, I dont think she would have anything to gain by lying about her heritage. I assume she is telling the truth. As for me, I would never claim that heritage because its too remote. However, I do have great respect for Native people and I feel I relate more to them.

  • @VASINGER You should be proud. That is one thing we can agree on ;-)

  • @Gentilejedi Yes, I am! Even though I am not a member, I am allowed to go to local Pow Wows in my area. Mostly Mattaponi and Nottoway in my area of East Virginia. Cherokees are in the western part of the state.

  • @VASINGER That is great. I enjoy your videos.

  • @VASINGER American Indians do not get upset if people claim American Indian heritage, if it is documented and actual real. However, enrollment for entitlements to American Indian benefits when someone is predominately of another ethnic group can be mind boggling to ethnic American Indians, the ones that are 7/8 Indian as opposed to the ones that are 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 Indian.

  • @VASINGER My great grandfather was American Indian, not me. He faced discrimination as an Indian, not me. His people are entitled. Less than 1/2 should be the cutoff for benefits or let the tribes themselves figure that out. I don't wave my *fractions* around or my gorgeous high cheekbones I happen to inherit, I support their cause and what they want to accomplish as Indigenous people of the Americas.

  • @VASINGER There is nothing wrong with saying you are of American Indian descent. There is no such thing as *part Cherokee* you either are or you are not. You may only claim citizenship if you are recognized as a tribal member (i.e. Cherokee, Choctaw, Navajo etc). Rita is not legally Cherokee and marketing products as Cherokee is illegal and punishable.

  • @VASINGER However, this does not mean she does not have *Indian* blood but like many people, have some genealogical gaps which cause tracing an ancestor, difficult. Especially since many Southeastern Indians did not sign the rolls, by choice.

  • @Gentilejedi I am pretty sure her mother is Cherokee, which is how you can be "part Cherokee" or half Cherokee. And no, you dont have to be full blooded Cherokee to be Cherokee. She looks Cherokee to me- in fact I thought she was full blooded. Many people say I look Cherokee. I am actually only 1/16th Cherokee. As you said, it was hard to find. Many families try to cover it up.

  • @VASINGER Not to offend, most people would not know a 100% Cherokee if they saw one. Let me name two, pretty near fullblooded, Wes Studi and Diamond Brown. She exhibits a very European phenotype (facial features), Southern European-ish. People associate Cherokee European phenotype these days = looking Cherokee. Cherokee's are Amerindian and look primarily European due to admixture.

  • @Gentilejedi I agree, but actually most people assume that NA tribes are all "red skins" . This is not true. Many in fact can be as almost as fair as Europeans. Some of the physical giveaways, however, are certain things (not necessarily unique to NA tribes) but more common. Such as: shovel teeth, extremely high (and prominent) cheek bones, flatter nose, almond shaped eyes, dense bones, meaty earlobes etc. These are not unique to NA features, but they do seem more common than whites

  • @VASINGER Correct, they are not unique to American Indians. The features you mentioned above are *mongoloid* traits associated with people of Asian descent. These traits are also seen in South and central America, Eskimo and Intuit which are all Amerindian. The *flat nose*, I'm not too sure about. Natives have a range in *nose* types. They are a unique looking group of people.

  • @VASINGER You are not Cherokee by blood, you are Cherokee by citizenship/tribal affiliations. That tribe has claimed you as a member. Claiming heritage and citizenship, two separate things. A tribe is not claiming part of you, either all of you are not at all.

  • @ethnosify Currently there are no tribes in VA that are *legally recognized* by the federal government. The state of VA may recognize a tribe, for example NC recognize the Lumbees. However, sufficient documentation needs to be submitted to the IBA to prove descent from actual American Indians tribes/peoples.

  • It's one of the top ten hits of 1977

    I love it!

  • Her lame rendition is bringing me lower... and lower...

  • they? already started along time ago. it cracks me up!! get this album from downloadmusic.im

  • This song was popular when I met my wife Teresa. We felt it was our song. Still do.

  • i love this song!!!!

  • Slower is indeed sexier, as far as this song is concerned.

    And less is more.

  • i think im in love

  • OMG this song remeinds me of when i was a kid listening to my sister play it over and over on a 45 YESSS

  • and this album did not have a bad cut on the entire thing. It was truly a great album to kick back and listen to. Ahhhhh, where did those days go?

  • I love the organ! It sounds so wonderfull...

  • Forget "American Idol", THIS....THIS is QUALITY!!!! 1977!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God I want to be able to do time travel and be able to show my son all the great things he missed out on this life. I'd go back to 1968 and bet the farm on the Mets & Jets to win it all in 1969....

  • OMG WHAT TERRIBLE VERSION!!! ROD STERWART IS FAR BETTER!!

  • back in davos switzerland (1977) played this song all the time

  • whatever happend to such great song!! love songs of the 70s wow!!!!! nothing comes close

  • This song is a prayer of thanks for being rescued from despair. God loves us as we are. Bullies make us think we are alone and unloved. But Jesus said "Ask and you shall Find." This human soul gives us a joyful prayer of thanks that works for every human heart, no matter our gender, race, sexual orientation, religious tradition. It is a prayer of thanks to the higher power that sent another human being into her life who brought her into God's light and love.

  • The best version. The way it was meant to be sung.

    Like a prayer.

  • IS SHE CHERS LONG LOST SISTAH :) ... SUCH A GREAT SONG..

  • Gas was $.25 a gallon, and people actually drove cross-country. Funny how times change.

  • Hey folks this is opne of those songs that I can't make up my mind which one I like more, her's or Jackie Wilson's original version. What do you say out there in YT Land, let me know and thank you dotnblk2 for this awesome share!!!

  • @dakotajim11378 ...it's not even close in my book, jim. the late great jackie wilson had the best version...

  • Saw the 2 in the 70's at Carowinds.....still a vivid memory. Still love them both!

  • This is a sing along. NOT karaoke.

    1. Karaoke has NO lead vocals!!!!

    2. Instrumental music is recorded with no vocals. (acceptable for karaoke use)

    3. Karaoke music is vocals removed post recording.

    4. MOST karaoke (not all) has on-screen lyrics.

Refer to RULE 1 of Karaoke Definition!!

    Dont believe me??? Google it!!

  • @Fritzk3tte so?

  • @iren1111 This says IN THE TITLE that this is KARAOKE! wish peoploe would get it right!!!

  • @Fritzk3tte and i wish somePEOPLE could spell correctly!!!!!!! who gives a crap about your definition of karaoke/

  • @Fritzk3tte

Wow...someone forgot to take their Ritalin.

  • RITA COOLIDGE , IS SO VERY BEAUTIFUL & BEAUTIFUL VOICE !!!

  • great

  • Wow, does this song bring back memories. When I was a ankle biter. I used to enjoy listening to this song doing errands with my mother in our old station wagon. Back then that was my whole world of music, songs like this one!

  • @Super2174 True..................!!!

  • Torn between this one and Jackie Wilson's version...I like them both, but each is for a different "time of the day", if you may.

  • Muito boa essa música.

    adorei

  • silky smooth voice

this woman could sing me to sleep anytime

  • I love her.

  • Best version.

  • No its not thank you.

  • Hey, whatever gets you through the night...

  • lolol

  • @titanosaurus79 So that was funny. Well, I do have my moments

  • omg this song sooooo old just came out when i was 12

  • one of my favorite performances ever!

  • omg hahaha boy don't i remember this song, i use to play this song on my bass guitar and i had her whole track on cassette tape, i felt chills going down my spine when i heard this song again hahaha, thank you for having this song on youtube

  • the late, great jackie wilson will always have the definitive version. nice job by rita though, who is quite easy on the eyes...

  • A great song by Rita Coolidge!!!!

  • this song does not work on this low speed

  • Great song by a great singer!

  • ITS NOT FAIR TO COMPARE ANYBODY TO JACKIE WILSON !!!! she gives it a nice lovin feeling yah

  • É linda e canta muito!!!

  • vjf and ethno are so wrong- The two can't be compared. Both are excellent in their own way. Rita smolders, and her soul is so much more subtle. If if listen to her for long she'll definitely grow on you. Watch "Shoorah"

  • What a powerful voice!

  • @ethnosify She is half Cherokee.

  • he look like a porn star lol

  • she might be talented, but this is like a coma compared to jackie wilson's version

  • So weak compared to Jackie Wilson.

  • I would love to quench her desire - and mine !!!

  • Rita wears great hip huggers in this video!!

  • You should hear her sing the ( Cherokee Morning song ) AMAZING.

  • She is such an amazing talent.

  • I love her voice!!!

  • Swingtown! :)))

  • I`ve recently been seeing this guy & he blow`s my mind with everything he does & say`s he played this song to me once & I`ve heard it many time`s before but never like I do now... xxx

  • She is a treasure

  • what a lovely lovely lovely lady -- and voice!

  • grat song i feel so god

  • do you have a version that doesn't have vocals?

  • No, I'd love to have a version of this vid. that doesn't have the lyrics down below, and with the correct title of the song, which was "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher & Higher". This is my favorite all-time remake (probably due to my long time crush on Rita Coolidge that started at the time this song was a hit back in 1977 when I was 14 years old) of a Jackie Wilson 1960's tune.

  • And I also forgot to add a version that the lyrics don't cover up Rita Coolidge's beautiful face.

  • smokin beautiful

  • i love this song .....

  • I Love the way this Song keeps changing Key "Higher and Higher" all the way to the End.

    Great Song, Beautiful Voice!!!

  • As a child of the 70's, this song brings back wonderful memories of a simpler time.

  • You said it...just how I feel

  • Me too...I'm in love! =)

  • oh me too! I hold these songs so dear! I also love, "were all alone" by her.

  • yes,for me before the shit hit the fan.

  • @Galvestoner420 - me too! my dad had this rotate on his car like Crystal Gayle (sp?)

  • @Galvestoner420 OH yeah

  • Promo clips (that's what we called them back then) were the greatest, as they focused on the artist and not a bunch of other crap that 'videos' had later on.

  • I remember this song was used for a 1984 Chicago Cubs montage. LOVE THE MONTAGE and song.

  • fanatstic tune...takes me back to Zambia,Africa...listening to this on the radio

    in the 70's.

  • Yes, I understand your viewpoints, but you fail to realize this is a karaoke concept. Much easier to sing with her than Jackie.

  • Jackie and Rita's "Higher" are #1 on my list. The newer one (Whomever singing it) is terrible.

  • listen to Jimmy barnes version its discusting oz rock crap

  • I love the little montages they used to do in the 70's.. it's basically like "we don't know what else to do, so let's put a bunch of moving still-like pictures up" lol. nice.

  • Gotta start somewhere. The first telephone wasn't a cell phone, you know?

  • They both are memorable versions no doubt :)

  • One of my ALL TIME favorites. I was only 12 years old when I fell in love with this song and that has not changed after all these years. Rita has a real GIFT in her voice. I don't think any body else could top her version-(my own opinion, of course).

  • Jackie Wilson's version is much better. She even had to change the lyrics to "One in a million men, I can now stand up and face the world again." The original is more upbeat, and the lyrics were, "one in a million girls, I can stand up and face the world."

  • Wow! She changed the lyrics because she's a different gender from the original singer! How horrible!

Whether Jackie Wilson's version is better is certainly open for debate (I agree with you) but her changing the lyrics in this way is no reason to think that.

  • Of course, you wouldn't want her to sing about love of a girl would you?? Jackie Wilson got kind of hysterical with his version. This is a good, mellow love song.

  • I just thought the way she changed the words to force them to rhyme was a bit corny. Tinymissy writes, "Of course, you wouldn't want her to sing about love of a girl would you??" It would be unusual if she did, but in Joan Baez's rendition of "the night they drove old dixie down," she still sings, "...back with my wife in Tennessee."

  • Baez was singing it from kind of like a storyteller's point of view I believe-but this song is more personal. But that's a good point.

  • creo que es la mejor cancion de rita

  • es una de las mejores canciones de Rita

  • I've always liked this song by Rita Coolidge!

  • Love this version by Rita Coolidge!

  • The song is beautiful, higher and higher....off to heaven good song with the background bag pipes...a good soldier marches of to heaven

  • This was my favorite song when I was 6!

  • She's a beautiful woman (Cherokee stock!) with a beautiful voice!

  • Shut up. Shes beautiful. And variety is the spice of life!

  • She has a big mouth. the cinematography at 1:45 is incredible.

  • This is the best remake so far but the original is classic and cant be touched.

  • This song has been done several times by different artists, but I like Rita's the best. She has a beautiful voice and puts her own personal touch on it. I'm not sure about the exact year but it came out sometime in the 1970's.

  • This is beautiful but I would like to hear Clay Aiken sing this song - he could make it his song and have another hit in 2008

  • Does anyone know when this hit the charts? I wanted to look & be just like her as a young lady. She truly IS a lady and very talented!

    Budice53

  • sometime in 1977.

  • My favorite Rita Coolidge song. Wonderful vocals!

  • i'm about as high as i can possibly be, thanks to your love!!!

  • Drummer Rick; you said it well. Rita has that Honey -sweet voice with a touch of sultry smokiness. She is the most beautiful Native-American i've ever seen bar-none and has so much class and poise which is sorely missing from today's lot. She is just Great!! Kristofferson a very lucky dude to land her .

  • Great song....

  • Awesome song! And I love this version of it.

    Thanks.

  • What a classy performer. Substance, style, inner and outer beauty, and great longevity. She's still performing on tour. A voice like honey with just a little smoke in it. She'll always be my favorite vocalist.

  • What a beautiful lady inside as well as out. Wish I was 20 years older with a chance to have had met her. Would have treated her like the queen of my heart instead of taking advantage of her like K.K. did.

  • I want to see the video version of this song that has the motorbikes. Maybe it only happened in Australia. Still, how can I see it again?
