Fantastic guitar, fantastic tone, fantastic job! I was watching this and noticed my mouth was hanging open partway through. I really enjoy this song, and your version sounded, well, fantastic.
Excellent job bro!!!! Funny story....tried to play this in front of a smart ass friend. His opinion? Practice this song for 3 hour a day for 5 years and you'll be just good enough.....Too Suck! Time to get to practicin!
considering I've seen Eric play the main G major rhythm riff with hybrid picking and this picks it all, MY HAT IS OFF to this guy!! Great job man!! I think the hardest part of this song is the SWING To it. Get some more swing in, and you got this tune NAILED!!!
Humility is an admirable trait..and you have it in spades Brother! One of the BEST covers of "Cliffs of Dover" I have ever seen..and I have some pseudo-virtuoso compadres (with degrees from fine music schools) who would be hard-pressed to render a more faithful version than you did friend! Cheers!
@Larrivee03 Thanks man! I appreciate your comment. It's been about 2 years, I was thinking about trying learn this song again and see if I could actually play it better this time. But learning it the first time involved large amounts of time and caffeine, so I'm not sure If I have the motivation. Once I get done learning these songs for this new band I joined I'm gonna start doing more licks and song vids. Cheers!
@bgoslick I know! I've got a lot of bad habits!! I'm self taught and I'm a horrible teacher :) I'm currently trying to unteach myself a lot of stuff :)
Yeah I hate that office because the ceiling is metal and the walls are sheetrock and they are hollow so all the reverb is from the room I have none on the amp or any pedals. This is the only thing of EJ's I've ever tried playing. He's a monster player. I was doing a lot of pull offs where EJ probably picks? But it should be close to the recording because I practiced it note for note and just faked the parts that were to fast for me. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks man! I wasn't sure if I really wanted to touch it cuz EJ's tone is so subjective but I tried to get as close as I could at the time with what I had to work with.
Do you pick every single note, when you move up the scale, or do you pick one note (upstroke), make a pull of, then pick the next note (upstroke) one string lower, pull off and so on...
So, its a bit like sweeping, but with pull offs between the note.
Thanks man, I'm a lot quicker now than when I made this vid, but in this vid I'm doing a lot of "faking". I'm just trying to play stuff at 3:16 that's in the same ballpark. More hammer ons and pull off than picking. I'm not a fast picker at all. I'm just trying to keep the feel and keep up. :)
I'm not sure?? I think he's probably picking more than I am but I'm not super familiar with his playing so you'll have to check out his live vids and see... I have a vid of him from Austin City limits and it looks like he does a lot of hammer/pulloffs.
Yeah that and the outro are pretty sick runs... It told me a solid month to get the whole song to where it was on this video. It's basically moving through the pentatonic positions in G, first at the 12th pos. then 10th, then 8th. I think I prolly do pull offs where Eric is picking cuz he's way faster than me. Good luck, you'll get it the key is to just do your own thing in the same timing but REAL slow and build it up to speed.
Very nice job. I can tell you worked very hard on it. I've been attempting the same song but I've only been playing for a year, so the beggning solo is a little choppy, but the rest is awesome. You play close to perfect all the way through, and you have great tone. Nice work!
Thanks alot! I've never been able to play fast so I kinda fake the fast parts that Eric plays... I feel I'm a lot better now so I've been tempted to really nail this an put another vid up.
ok....nice job.

Very good, but you're anchoring your picking hand! That's a VERY bad habit, work on fixing it dude before you hurt your wrist!

Great tone! And smoooth playing, that stuff at 3:16 was so good! Jealous!!! Maybe the loads of reverb hid some flaws that I can't hear but you can?
Do you do much EJ style? I hear in alot of his solos pentatonic runs that seem to change key/scale in the middle of fast runs, phew!

That is one of my favorite songs of all time, and that was a great cover. You should be truly proud of this one bro.

Wow, a great cover! You nailed it!
But I have a question about the part at 3:16
I mean, its a typical Johnson lick.
Very fast, but exaclty played notes.
Do you pick every single note, when you move up the scale, or do you pick one note (upstroke), make a pull of, then pick the next note (upstroke) one string lower, pull off and so on...
So, its a bit like sweeping, but with pull offs between the note.

Ok so...
Johnson completely picks licks like that?
Or is he also doing hammer-ons and pull offs?

How long did it take you to get the run 2:21? I've been trying that for so long but still not luck...

The outro and lick at 3:16 probably took me the longest to almost nail.
