  • There certainly is NOT enough for a "match" on either the 1st or 2nd sites. NO distinguishing features to place them exactly. I'm sure they're close but hardly an exact match. I wish these films would have less fluff and more meat. Say, a geographer or two, Also, when machine guns or rifles fire at men far away, you will see the strikes--the misses if you will--in the surrounding dirt. If you don't see any signs of that, it is doubtful if there are any live rounds fired.

  • SOOOO!!!! my theory is awesome though!!!! grrr

  • whoever disliked this is wrong! no dislikes aloud! these people fight for everything you have right now and everything you will have! be proud!!!!!!!

  • @27AnnaJo You could dislike it for the fact it should never have happened :(

  • man those fullers are smart they actually figured exactly where the camera was filming...

  • Lets not forget the French who lost more as 60.000 men in this battle...

  • @missishake "Soldiers above all others pray for peace"

  • i got goose bumps watching this. i never knew it was this interesting.

  • what is a fueseliar

  • @evilmickey100 a Fusilier is like a Rifleman, French for rifle is fusil. If you are Fusilier, it is a type of regiment but if it is a rank it would be a Private in that unit.

  • @ThePhantomMajor thank u

  • I agree it's sad some people are ignorant of the past. However, YOU aren't and people like you will keep faith with our ancestors, no matter which side they were on. I'm 60 yrs old and I knew and talked to WWI vets. Do that now with the vets who are still with us. And on Memorial Day, put flowers on the graves of veterans. They don't have to be family. As long as someone remembers they will never truly be lost to us.

  • i love world war 1&2 i hve the pashon for this history

  • @TheHappyface96 same i repect ww1 but ima fan of mobile warfare ww2

  • War is a strange thing. while terrible things happen, surely something good must come of it?

  • @missishake So very true and very well said.

  • Did he say "Some of the look happy and gay"? at 4:53

  • Hey, these guys are staying at Auchenvillas, I recognise the area. If anyone is visiting the Somme I recommend it.

  • zum grausen,,,

die deutschen soldaten waren und sind die Besten.

  • das ist englische propaganda.

    schlecht.verry bad...

    ein deutscher

  • i bet thay would kill for M1 Abrams lol

  • @Karletto555 a couple stinger missiles.

  • World War I seems like the most pointless war ever, if ten radical students had gotten a telegram telling them not to fire a couple bullets at Francis Ferdinand then the war would've never happened and millions of lives would be spared. And if people weren't so arrogant about their national backgrounds then his assasination wouldn't have set off such a horrid chain of events. The only purpose this war holds was to training the future commanders of World War II...

  • @locutusofborg278

If people weren't so arrogant?! This was 1914, not 2010. Judge by the standards of the time. Nationalities were built on rivalities, historical constructs and revisionism, xenophobia, and colonialism at the time. Britain, France and Belgium were in Africa bringing civilization to "monkey people". by their own words.

  • @Drakken682 While I agree we must take the standards of the time into account, the fact remains that most pre-WW1 Europeans saw war as a game, and failed to recognize the consequences of industrialization as applied to conflict. Also, there's not really any justification for their respective beliefs in the inherent superiority of their national "races" - there was lots of trade of all sorts in that period. It wasn't hard to find out who those "other" people were, but most chose not to.

  • @locutusofborg278

Austria-Hungary wasn't that alone or special, only that it was crumbling internally, holding together only because of the Hapsburg's sheer force of willpower. It wasn't a ribbon-cutter nobody with no real power like Prince Charles. Franz Ferdinand WAS the future of Austria-Hungary's authoritarian imperial monarchy.

  • @locutusofborg278 The war was inevitable. The unification and rise of Germany meant that sooner or later the powers of Europe would have to determine the new pecking order. That, almost without fail, means armed conflict.

  • @missishake

I am afraid it was a lot more complex. Of course the Austrians are to blame, but also the Serbs - whos aggressive Nationalism challenged the Austrian state - also all the other Nations that were in an arms race - and also full of Nationalism. Not one single people is to blame - Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, Intolerance and a system of Mistrust and Alliances caused the war, even if the assasination triggerd it.

  • @Youmakemefart

Also Russians for going on full mobilization. Even Germans and French (later enemies) warned Russian not to go full mobilized (to support Serbia). Apparently Russians had their own ambitions and pride to get satisfied. Yes, situation was very complex and putting blame solely on one country is wrong.

  • look at the guy on the bottom left at 4:34 he looks like the same dude i saw on the internet who had shell shock on wikipedia

  • My grandfather fought with the 77th Division, US Army, in the Argonne from Sept. to Nov. 1918.

It's great to see history brougt alive in video's like this.

  • @oldcremona wasn't that the division in which the "Lost Battalion" served?

  • dulce et decrum est-et pro partia

  • mori

  • my grandfthers brother was with the salford pals, he survived the somme, only to be KIA on the 10th november 1918,,the day before the 'war to end wars' was over, my grandfather survived being gassed..god bless them both (I am ex british military myself) may god bless ll those who died in what seems to me a stupid war....Steve

  • My great grandfather was a part of the 1st newfoundland regiment and he had sadly died in beaumont hamel

  • my fellow Newfoundlanders rose up an walked into hell for king and country. they felt they owed it..different time differnt people. if u only knew the saddness we feel.july 1st is canada day but not in Newfoundland and Labrador. that war put us back so far in so many ways.we gave an gave an filled the ranks so many times back then our population was just 250 000 or so.a whole generation lost in ww1.god knows we needed them. our population would be alot bigger today if that didnt happen. loyalty!

  • so true fellow newfoundlander

  • i know, i know! The white feather was a sign of cowardice!

  • selfish little gits

    who have no understanding

    of history..........

    bring back the white feather

  • Those boots look painful!! I doubt I'd even be able to make it around the block in them with that metal heel. Ouch!

  • secondly ,,walking into a wall of bullets isnt what i call courageous,,its certain death,,its idiocy,,but if they didnt do it there were officers waiting to shoot them dead on the spot,,and if ya had shellshock ya were executed for cowardice,,such was the officer class,,dont try to defend this savagery

  • oh really,,there wasnt a hero for justice among any of them on both sides, their heads were filled with so much propaganda shit,,a true leader would have have said "no more of this" and stick it to the generals with the support of tens of thosands of men, if this kind of logic was applied ,,it would have saved the lives of millions,,they died for sweet fuck all,,cant even say their deaths were worth anything,,its just a damn sad waste of life,,on all sides,...

  • greatest battles,,wtf..it was a slaughter house,,men used as cannon fodder,,i cant respect men that dont put a value on their own lives ,,and i mean on both sides,,lets the generals slug it out,,all those slaughtered souls had families and children,,call me a coward but my family will always come before duty to a country that views me a cannon fodder.

  • Not the generals, the capitalists that use military and government to expand empires.

  • heres a thing look up

    what a white feather

    means....or even honour

oh heres an other the greater good

by the way DROP the worthy part

    you waste of oxygen

  • yeah ,,it all makes sense to you,,theres honour in it ,,isnt there, how many wars have you been in,,white feather,,medals, purple hearts ,,blah blah blah,,war is horror and death ,,if you need it fine,,i dont..what happened sickens me,,nothing noble in in for anyone, except twats like you...

  • To be honest mikemoscow you cannot really insult people who gave you freedom or speech because it's lack of respect.

  • meant to say of speech

  • @1234legend1234 I'm not trying to take anything from the soldiers of WW1, but "freedoms" don't come from the military, they come from the people. Historically, the military is the force most likely to strip civil liberties, not enforce them - and nearly every advance in said liberties has come from a civilian campaign and not a military action of any kind.

The military is the tool of the state, and as such is inherently pretty neutral, if not leaning to the authoritarian side of things.

  • @guysmiley00 but without the military to enforce the state's will, the state would be impotent, so to that extent it is pretty vital

  • I cannot put into words the sorrow i feel for the men who fought in the war, i have so much respect for them, i read books about the war i watched a few films and documentries but they could never show the true horrors that those men faced.

  • i think we should all be taught many battles on both sides of the war so we can be grateful of what we have but hey instead lets all found out what Paris Hilton did yesterday or Cris Brown

and wave our flags around saying thank you for fighting and continue not giving a Fuck!

i wish people understood what happened in many of these horrible battles but you have to be there back in there time with them and seeing your brother in arms beside you to understand

  • I agree, you are 100% correct, people are just ignorant of ww1, in my English Class a girl even asked did the Germans win, i thought WTF so i didnt even bother answering the question, this girl was more concered about what Paris Hilton was up 2 or Britney. What a joke this generation is, we should remember the lost generation every day.

  • @1234legend1234

We didn't start a war anywhere near what they started! Everyone's a bloody ageist...

  • @methenium

Sorry mate long time ago since I commented on this video, what is it that i said that has ruffled your feathers?

  • @1234legend1234 Yea a terrible shame. The knowledge or lack thereof amazes me. Sad statement on today's society."Those who don't learn from history are condemed to repeat it".

  • @TheDrummerRon It's not even a hundred years since the war started and people still have not got a clue about the war. I think in 20years time it would be the same for the second war if it wasnt for Hitler.

  • @1234legend1234 I agree with you wholeheartedly. The world has become ignorant. They simply do not realize or care that the Great War took the lives of over twelve million men, women, and children. This is especially frustrating when I am trying to explain the ultimate effects of WWI. If it did not happen we would not have many of the things we now take for granted. And that's just the changes in technology alone. I wrote a historical fiction novel on WWI and am happy to see that some stil care

  • @MajorPatMcClelland Did your book get published? I live near a national library so I could check your book out. I think the tragic thing is in schools there is more emphasis on WW2. Which was a terrible war so children are growing up really just thinking that History is about Churchill and Hitler, which is a crying shame for those men who in my opinion were tricked by propaganda to go stand in a muddy trench fearing for your life every hour every day.

  • @1234legend1234 I self published it and it is available as a Free E-Book or a hard copy can be bought for $17.36. It is on sale at Lulu.com. The book is called Destroyed by the War. It is about an Irish soldier and his struggles. It is quite graphic because I tried to make it as realistic as possible. I completed and self published it in my senior year of high school

  • @MajorPatMcClelland I'll check it out. I think war books have to be graphical. Especially WW1 as I don't the films and books show how gory it was. I think Birdsong was a very good book when it got to the action parts. I also thought Regeneration was good for showing what the war can do to you mentally.

  • I would have loved to have fought in this and been one of the many hundreds of Ulster men shouting NO SURRENDER when charging the german lines!

  • @1234legend1234 i agree 100% most kids dont even know what the battle of the somme is and who fought in it they are more concerned about twilight

  • @1234legend1234

That's more hilarious than the kids I bumped into who didn't know about a massive tsunami, earthquake, and nuclear disaster in Japan

  • @lightlittlebrownboy

    "and nuclear disaster in Japan"

(they thought I was talking about WWII bro. Never been more disappointed in humanity in my life.)

  • @lightlittlebrownboy That's shocking how have they not heard of these disasters? Well I guess MTV news doesn't talk about them. The only disasters teenagers and MTV are interested in are fashion disasters. It's a sorry world.

  • @1234legend1234 Respect.

  • relax, you subnormal imbecile, you reckon I should be 'banned' isn't that what harry patch and his like fought for?

    freedom of speech?

    stop taking things too seriously.

i bet you wet the bed and drink horlicks!

  • "some of the men looked happy and GAY"...we made a point of shooting at THEM first, as we were afraid of being "taken prisoner" by them

  • I dislike Documentaries that have commercial-breaks, so thanks for editing them out...some American ones have them every 8 mins. British ones only have about half as many.

  • Harry patch got shrapnel in his lower abdomen not groin not shot...mikemoscow you should know the facts.oh yeh and dont post your sad ramblings just because mummy and daddy will not listen to you.

  • mikemosocw what a sad pathetic cunt you are, total waste of a human life. Hope you suffer horribly for the rest of your miserable existence..which I hope is long and pointless

  • any one who calls himself 'thehitmanisback' is surely an inbred, uneducated moron!

go back to your stinking hovel, you idiot!

  • not only can he talk, he can actually MOVE! i have several hours of Harry patch doing just that on tape! talking, well, maybe not talking coherently, more like groaning, i also have footage of him leaning if any one is interested.

  • you are quite correct, Harry Patch is in deed alive but currently serving an 18 month jail sentence for 'improper conduct' apparentelly he was discovered interfering with his home helps eleven year old daughter, he was convicted by the fact the girl in question could identitfy his old war wound, a snipers bullit buried in his groin! How ironic that the wound he got for serving his country

    lead to his incarceration..

  • peedophiles

  • still what are the chances of them being alive or able to talk?

  • GIVE ROBERT SHAW HIS PROZAC

  • Are there still any wwi veterans alive? I remember seeing one interviewed in a docu made sometime 1999-2000

  • Harry Patch is still alive and will be 110 come his birthday. There are a few others still around but he's the last who fought in the trenches.

  • :( Harry Patch is no longer alive.

  • Really? I've not heard anything. I've read his story in a few books 'the last tommies' etc and read his biography, feel like I got to know him a bit. Hope he gets to meet his 3 pals that were killed.

  • I know, thats what confused me, the news put little effort into announcung the death of the last WWI trench veteran, Harry Patch. I read his biography too, very sad that he was on his own for the last few years as his beloved wife died. Thats the problem with the news, they fail to clearly mention the things that might matter most to all of us! Instead they talk about Prescot's weight problem ect. :(

  • Is that a good book, Baz?

  • Yeh, pretty good. I've been told that Harry Patch is in fact still alive. Hmm, I'm confoozed now!!

  • Harry Patch is indeed still alive. Check his wikipedia page. :)

  • Henry Allingham, a RNAS mechanic is still alive.

  • Canadian drill they're doing at the end.

    Thanks for video.

  • These videos of the story are best Iv seen on youtube.
