This is sad to see, but reality. Check on friends, neighbors, especially the elderly. I sometimes drop by with a bag of essentials to an older neighbor who won't admit she needs help. We all need help sometimes and there is no shame in that. It makes me sick to see people like Bill Gates donating millions to vaccinate the 3rd world (noble cause) but we can use charity here plenty. America needs to start taking care of our own, for once.

Cat - Americans are going through a phase of denial. Most people know there is something not quite right about how the economy and the country is heading. But denial sets in - when some media folks come along and say, everything is AOK, they suck in it - believing it indelibly. Perhaps they'll only wake up when the food banks run out of food, and banks tell you to come back next week because they run out of cash, gas hits $6.00, Gov has no more cash for the 99ers, housing drop by another 25%.

If most of them are going to remain asleep and ignorant, then may they live in cardboard boxes and eat pretzels and chicken broth every night. How many of us remember the US has between 500 trillion to 1 Quad-trillion worth of derivatives to address. As we know - they haven't yet, so far they just put some band-aids to patch up the gaping holes as big as the Hoover Dam and say everything is AOK. Do some maths - based on 5T - even if they write off 5 trillion a year, it will take them 100 years.

Looking at a st. to nowhere - again it's scores of millions lost. We simply couldn't figure out how many empty malls & home are out there. @yaplonglong well said. Denial seems to be THE cancer infecting the nation; and I think we of the conscious, caring community need to spend some energy trying figure this one out. I mean, we've had crisis, depressions before; and people have struggled to face facts; but our modern culture is so much more... comfortable than previous generations, (who were at least fighting back). It seems we were sucked into the illusions of the cold war, consumerism, cheap goods. It turned us into cowards?

A lot of good people are going to suffer. People better start learning how to make ends meet with one income, for that's all many of them are going to have after the economy suffers it's next leg down. Good example, (I'm not patting myself on the back either, so don't start..) Our local food pantry ran out of peanut butter because the price has increased. I bought them a case and delivered it last Saturday. I have been called 3 more times this week, Tuesday, Wednesday & today asking if I can bring in more because it is a staple the kids love. I am dropping off 3 more cases this afternoon. I have never had the pantry call me before until this year.

They don't even run the food bank in France during warm weather, but gleaning is legal here year 'round. About a third of the French who qualify for benefits refuse to take them. I've been warning my fellow Americans about this for DECADES and have been called all kinds of names. The writing has been on the wall since the '80s. I don't think Americans understand how tough and calm and frugal most Europeans are. We've seen a lot! Uprated.

During my many trips to China I've explained to them that when I was a kid, it was common to hear adults telling their children, "eat all the food on your plate people in China only get to eat a bowl of rice once a day." If the US doesn't change it's course, it's very likely Chinese adults will be telling children to eat all the food on their plate, for Americans are starving.
