  • Great video! I love that you guys rib each other. RC is supposed to be about having fun with your mates, and some people tend to take this sort of thing far too seriously. Nobody is launching nuclear missiles here, so I see no reason not to laugh along with friends.

  • Seen the follow up video. Knew it would fly eventually. Good to see it in the air and looked like it flew great. Just mounting an air foiled stab flat on something flat tends to kick the LE a smidgon lol. Thanks for sharing

  • Ron, if you come across this coment, I've noticed your booms are very flimsy, so when you pull up, the elevator may be forcing the stabilizer down, forcing the nose down.

  • That's really smart. I'm going to do the same. I'll shoot every flight at my club field making sarcastic coments and then post only the ones that fail so I'll look clever.

    Apart from the obvious misalignment of the tail, and maybe wrong incidences and perhaps wrong cg position I wouldn't say the plane would't fly.

    Congratiolations Ron, you have at least tried, witch is by far more than most do in a ARTF world.

  • looked to be the angle between the wing and stab was off, the tail lifted when the air off the prop hit it making it nose down. it was likely too far off to be corrected with up elevator so it "pitch hunted" to the ground :(

  • I thought Ron held it together pretty well. Whenever I have a new plane I build from just a concept in my head, and things don't go well on the first few flights, I get pissy and sometimes cuss. Ron's attitude : "It can be fixed" is right on. I applaud him for two things. First, for being an outside-of-the-box thinker with the balls enough to give his idea a try. Second, for being a good sport about it. Good try, Ron!!

  • I dont understand how anyone cant figure out the problem here. The CG might have been off, but the main dela here is that the elevator, and the rudder are in the prop wash, so the plane has Vector thrusting effects. A small pull on the elevator will cause a massive angular moment on the plane. Likewise when He tried to pull the plane up, the plane went straight up, and then he rapidly tried to level it before it stalls..... and a small down force on the elevator pushed the plane nose done dive.

  • well its one week later and now I wait in anticipation to see Bruce's video of the second attempt at flying this horrible plane.....wonder if it will attract the same attention as this one did...and I locked Ken in the Hanger with Barbie ( after I got him away from his daddy )

  • Hey, anyone who has been flying rc for any amount of time has had this same experience. Sometimes your creations just dont work as expected or at least your flying skills are not up to it. Oh well, try again. :)

  • ...and as far as being too hard on the guy. I've seen you rib others the same way. Guys do this to each other. Especially guys who participate in the same activity. It's born from the spirit of competition and is part of many cultures....it's nice you all are sticking up for the guy, but he and Bruce obviously know each other well enough that a few playful digs aren't going to hurt anyones feelings.

  • See, the problem with this video's title is that it can be interpreted a couple of different ways. Its either a horrible crash of a passable scratch-build. Or a slightly more meritous crash of a horrible aircraft.....

  • Bruce, you elitist bastard! How dare you and your friend fly your planes the way you see fit. RC flying is serious business, and should be left to people who understand that fun is merely a byproduct of our moral obligation to control small flying machines with radio signals.

The second you make this hobby more than just fun and a laugh extreme emotions come into it, if your not prepared to smash up your new model every time you fly, you should sell it and take up knitting! If you do Have a smash, get as much of a laugh out of it as you can! I love it, keep it up bruce!

  • the whole weight is of the model is in wing area which causes centrifugal force in the middle and causes the plane to do sesaw and make it very sensitive to the elivator movements. you should balance the weight by moving some weights towards the tail and some towards the nose of the plane to avoide the plane being too sensitive to the elivator.. cheers

  • Bugger9946 .... I am pretty darn sure that Bruce and the rest of the crew at the field would have helped Ron in anyway they could once filming stopped. And please do not include me in your "remainder", because I have been there and seen experienced the atmosphere at this field. It is friendly with lots of good natured banter and ribbing. RC is a hobby it's not life or death.

  • You should have stuck Picard on the plane, he could have increased power to the main deflector and saved the nose. :)

  • @BUGGER9946 You still don't get it -- we already talked about the model in depth but Ron was happy that it would fly regardless of any "issues". Everyone gets the piss taken out of them at our field -- it's just the culture and it makes for a great environment. No stuck-up idiots around here -- everyone just has a damned good time. Because of that, many people drive hours to come fly with us rather than join clubs that are much closer to them.

  • @BUGGER9946 I was there when this video was taken. Bruce is quite correct that the build quality was indeed pointed out to Ron. He was keen to be filmed for the maiden. So no harm no fowl. this would have to be the best bunch of guys n gals that i have ever met. All take the piss out of everyone. Great fun

  • @BUGGER9946 I don't think you understand just what really goes on at the Tokoroa field . I've been a member here for about 4 yrs now and it's a bloody great place to fly (and talk). Everyone gives each other lip and if one makes a boo boo your going to hear sounds of laughter from the pits . Also it's not the first time Ron has flown or attempted to fly a plane of his own design. Don't worry Bruce gets the piss taken out of him too and he can take it just as good as he gives it .

  • i dont think that the H stab has a symmetrical foil. looks to be flat bottom so i think the tail might be lifting the tail up. also looks nose heavy

  • I too did the "walk of shame" this week. I took one of my home built planes out and it was not as ready to fly as I had hoped. However, the children watching got a kick out of watching the action, I had a good time providing the action, and the plane is totally fixable and will return to the field again REAL soon.

  • Ron ought to eyeball his beast before attempting flight. The stab is clearly not parallel to the wing. Somehow, i don't think that made much difference.
