Maravillosa esta producción. Todos estan a la altura, ACA es una gran artista, conmovedora y Andreas fabuloso. GRACIAS por compartir este video. Es una fiesta par el oido y la vista. Thank you so much, thank you LoRau.
Just one suggestion: though 'I embrace you" is a technically correct translation, it is more emotionally resonant in English to say "I take you in my arms." "Embrace" is a latin derivate and stylistically latin derviates are more for the head than the heart. "I take you in my arms," provokes a stronger emotional reaction than "I embrace you" which may sound more elegant than the plain English but it also sounds colder and more abstract.
I went to see Rodelinda at the Met because I loved this production so much, but was very disappointed. This was a moment of grace. I don't know about Antonacci, but I don't think Scholl will have another like it. I think he really needs the support of his singing partners. Perhaps you have to hear him sing this with someone else to fully appreciate how beautifully Antonacci supports him here. Furthermore, they match each other's elegant restraint and understatement. Just superb and very special.
We flew to New York to attend the Met production of Rodelinda (11-26-2011). I can only say, all bow to the one and only, true Queen of Lombardy, Anna Caterina Antonnaci. Antonnacci and Scholl forever!
Was lucky enough to see this at Glyndebourne. Could of heard a pin drop. In 30 years of opera viewing this live was without doubt the most extraordinary 7 minutes of singing I have ever heard anywhere.
I wish someone would post this sung by Maureen Forrester and Theresa Stitch-Randall. I heard it almost thirty years ago, and it was so unbelievably beautiful. This too was heartbreakingly beautiful.
Quel duo magnifique chanté par 2magnifiques chanteurs! J'ai eu la chance et le bonheur de travailler avec Antonacci et ce fut un très grand plaisir, merci Madame.
Beautiful. It is so humbeling to think that composers such as Handel could create such masterpieces with a limited harmonic pallete. Brilliantly sung and interpreted. Simply sublime
I'm one of those people who prefers to listen to rather than watch opera because I usually find the staging and the over-the-top acting distracting, but this duet has to be watched as well as listened to in order to be fully appreciated. I love how they react to each other, how he gently holds her even during the difficult vocal parts. Just wonderful mise en scene. A unique experience tha brings everything together and just takes your (well, my) breath away.
These two have more sexual tension in this performance than Netrebko and Villazon will ever have rolling around in their underwear. How restrained, yet how passionate!
The fact that they are rolling around in their underwear is not their fault, but of the modern stage directors! Neverthless, you're right in your point ;)
This video is an absolute miracle.Composer,conducter,musicians,singers...They are all together the music. This production makes me cry. You can feel the humanity. A very special evening.
Did you know that he is also a baritone!!!! I have seen him sing a two part by himself!!!!! I am hanging for him to tour Melbourne, Australia again!!!!!
Imagine that! I've seen it done by someone else, and I' not surprised he could do it as well. It must be real cool. I also suspect it's easier for him to turn on the baritone than to carry on the countertenor part.
He usually says it's more comfortable for him to sing countertenor. I think his baritone is like that of a musical actor. The one-man duet is on youtube, too, search for the wraggle-taggle gypsies song.
i have this dvd, i wish i was there ...beautiful piece, master work! scholl's voice is touching, definitely my type,no one touchs me as he dose, marvellous!谢谢上传
Oh my gosh..... I knew Andreas since he was singing in Winterthur (Switzerland) many years ago - have never seen this...... my goose pimples will probably stay overnight, I am simply overwhelmed... BEAUTIFUL PERFECTION, touching, stunning, out of this world!
Wow!! Thanks for posting it. Apart from singing it is just amazing how much tension there is in their acting. This is why we have something like opera. Superb!
Handel wrote for castrati (coutertenors did not exist) because women where not permitted to sing in public places, it's that simple. The voice of a castrati could compete with the instruments. The moment when you could not tell if it is a instument or a voice, that was, an still is, magical.
of course countertenor exist in that time and before that, since medieval times, only that countertenor were more suitable for sacred music and for english and french music where they don't wanted italian castrati
I'd like to hear Andreas sing J.S. Bach's Et Misericordia (Magnificat). As far as I know, he never recorded this great piece of music. Or did he? Any information on this is very much appreciated.
Wow! These are definitely two of my new favorite singers. What a beautiful voice Anna Caterina Antonacci has! And those low notes are amazing! And Andreas Scholl is great too! And of course I've always loved Handel- I'm glad to have found this new amazing piece!
Again, I find myself sitting here crying like a baby. This is just too beautiful. Handel and Scholl together just is beyond comprihension, here wonderfully balanced by Antonacci. She's hot, musically and otherwise!
yes, antonacci is wonderful! and scholl's and her timbre combine just in the right balance of harmony and tension, which makes their Rodelinda and Bertarido not only visually such a credible couple.
Scholl is great, but don't forget the great Antonacci as well! Both voices blend together wonderfully, as both have a great deal of warmth that fits this romantic duet a lot. Antonacci's unique timbre is so expressive and sensual, contrasting beautifully with Scholl's more placid and transcendental tone. Great interpretation!
I keep showing my favourite things to my husband and friends, and they usually go, allright, fine, and what. When I showed this duet to my husband, he was motionless until the end. Since then, I made him listen to some other recordings of Andreas Scholl, and the same phenomenon reappeared every time. Any explanation?
BTW, William Christie's not innocent either, in doing this to us.
Fine voices. How Scholl can sing with such a beautiful tone, clear technique, and musicality with his falsetto voice defies explanation. The Copenhagen DVD of "Giulio Cesare" starring Scholl along with soprano Michael Maniaci is supposed to be released this spring. The art direction may be flakey, but the voices should be remarkable. I keep looking it.
Handel's duets are so beautiful. And I love Andreas Scholl, he sings wonderfully, he can do whatever he wants with his voice, he looks good on the stage, and acts well. Perfect.
In one of Handel's operas, Floridante, the hero and the heroine are both altos, I like there duet very much.
David Hansen and Emma Matthews where are you? I'd love to see YOU singing this divine aria!

Andreas Scholl is the reason why I want to sing as a countertenor. His voice just blends perfectly with Antonacci's.

Antonacci's theatricality is a miracle. Not since Callas has there been such a singing actress. "Over acting" in Opera? What a STUPID remark.
