I remember seeing a clip of this 'Mystery Diagnosis' show where they were interviewing the doctor who made this amazing removal of this huge tumor growing around this lady's carotid artery. His parting comment was that this operation "was a lot of fun"!
Valuing intermediate 'instrumental' steps, for themselves, is immensely valuable to getting to the end product. At least with the way human minds are designed!
