I like a lot of Lars von Trier's films (Europa, Dogville, Antichrist) but I really hated Breaking the Waves. Before you ask why I'm even here, it's because I think it's a great trailer. But I don't know, I found the relentless abuse on the central character too much to bear in this case, and the end of the film really seemed to suggest that her suffering was okay. I'd love to hear an [intelligent] response to this problem because I do think he's a great filmmaker.
@TulseLuper I'm not sure i can give you an intelligent response, but i can say this:
Lars Von Trier takes a lot of his inspiration from an old danish director called Carl Th. Dreyer. Carl Th. Dreyer has often centered his films around the concept of "the suffering woman". This is very clear in his silent masterpiece "The Passion of Joan of Arc" from 1928.
Since i started watching Dreyer's films i have gotten a new understanding and appreciation of LVT's ability to portray weltschmerz.
well i don't think the ending suggests that her suffering was okay...first it's an ironic response to those pseudo-christians whom had memorized some rules and thought they knew everything about god and what's right and wrong and second i think it actually symbolizes her trymph over death and evil..and lars von trier is a great filmmaker.
well i don't think the ending suggests that her suffering was okay...first it's an ironic response to those pseudo-christians whom had memorized some rules and thought they knew everything about god and what's right and wrong and second i think it actually symbolizes her trymph over death and evil..and lars von trier is a great filmmaker.

Reading the story and seeing how it's played out in a von Trier film are two completely different things. You should see this, especially if you liked Antichrist, or Dogville.
I just found out about this Lars von Trier character through an article by Roger Ebert concerning Antichrist. Now I'm looking at a video for another movie that stars Emily Watson?! Fuck! I LOVE
seansotheman: you may ant to watch 'Hilary and Jackie', she plays Hilary du Pre....and she is fantastic. Also 'Punch-Drunk Love' is quirky. Quite good.
Loved Katrin Cartlidge in this as well. She was a good counterweight to Emily Watson's Bess. She was also great in Mike Leigh's Naked. So sad she's gone.
@uzzy2k5 stop the bankers.BANKSTERS.when you go for any type of loan,or mortage, you are a capital subscriber to it,not repayable money i found out,no doubt they will amend via wording lies.they then at side create fake money which you pay back, well they are a business, evil stuff heh.this then gets dumped in markets and the debts are sold as bonds, the end of the chain is capital subscrition again but they own the money now, paid out as mature bonds,,using tier 1,2,3 accounting,
@Apalmeic5 worst thing is its fraud, but governments won't help, guess who donates to them governments as working capital,$500,000 say per loan if thats what you need, governments keep the first $500,000,and make profit of $500,000 from it..edward 3 gave us free allodial land, shame the end of feudalism is back under the bankers again,we are slaves again, economic slaves.
OMG this is of the BEST movies EVER! I had to watch the rest of the "Golden Heart Trilogy" after watching this. Emily Watson was A KNOCK OUT performer here...sweet jesus, AMAZING! Man, the 90's were unparalleled when it come to movies.

Watson pulled it off. literally stunning.
she really does as she had to have sex with my dad in the movie he was the "lighthouse keeper" in it, The stories he told me about when he was making it sssooo funny!!!
This is yet another example of a trailer that ruins the movie before you've even seen it; it tells you EVERYTHING! Luckily I've already seen Breaking The Waves, so it wasn't spoiled, but it's annoying that so many film trailers these days just tell you the entire story.. By the end of the trailer you don't even need to see the bloody movie!
@rielalaj i disagree. there's so much more to a good film than the plot. the amazing script, genius camera work, emotional impact, etc. are not accessible through this trailer. it's still well worth it.
This film cuts deeper than any other. The 90s was a great decade for movies but, aside from films like Schindler's List that have an implicit emotional impact because of the very nature of the subject matter, the simplicity and sheer force of this film make it pretty untouchable. Or maybe it's the operatic/naturalistic thing it's got going on. Or maybe the final scene. Or maybe the acting. Whatever. It also FEELS unlike any other film I've seen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A good, albeit very overrated 1990s films (not even on the same level as Campion's "The Piano" or Figgis's "Leaving Las Vegas") but that said one hell of a rousing little montage. Accolades all around.
it's way better than Leaving Las vegas come on. And probably equal to the Piano. the acting though in this film from Emily Watson pushes it to galaxy levels to me.
I get tears in the eyes just from watching this clip - has to be one of the BEST movies I've ever seen. Brilliant performances from everyone, especially Emily. Such a powerful story.
yes definitely watch it alone. With some kleenex...for crying. It's devastating notj ust because of thes tory but mainly because of Emily Watson's powerful acting.
I remember seeing this like 5 yrs ago on HBO about at about 3am drunk and the whole time I was just like "Really? Did that really just happen?! Did she really just do that?" Quite an eye-opener.
Was Watson even in the trailier, didn't see her.

I really want to see this. Is this a do-not-watch-with-parent movie?

Definetly, yes! It's a good movie, but watch it alone.
lokeloverno1 4 years ago 7
yes definitely watch it alone. With some kleenex...for crying. It's devastating notj ust because of thes tory but mainly because of Emily Watson's powerful acting.
