YOU KNOW THERE ARE AT LEAST 2 DASH 8 LOCOS HERE THE DC AREA, I HAVE SEEN THEM BEING USED AND SWITCHERS IN DC YARD AND AS TRACK REPAIR HEADS ON NEC... SUCH A SHAME THEY ARE LETTING GOOD BEAUTIFUL LOCOS LIKE THIS GO TO WASTE ON BULLSHIT...
The F59PHI and P42DC series were introduced so they replaced the F40PHs. But some have been converted into commuter train engines such as the Coaster F40PHM-2C.
the other reason is that they remove the diesel engine and all of a sudden have alot of extra space. So instead of having a cab car and a baggage car they now have a baggage car that is also a cab. They are also used on Amtraks Cascades. These cars are Spanish Talgos. They dont have space for baggage and the Talgos dont make a cab car. So they converted engines to make cab cars and baggage cars for them.
not to sound weird or anything, but man it must feel good stickin your arm out the window wavin at some railfan in an Amtrak Dash 8 which are like the bomb. cant wait till i become an engineer, cuz i know how railfans like to be amazed, horn shows, waves, it all seems pretty sweet
Thats what I thought at first but the k5H and K5L are really the same horn. Not to be confused with the K5LA. Thye just have different mounting styles.
I own a set K-5Hs of the "high manifold" style. I have on video posted if you wanna check it out. The #1,#2, and #3 bells are on the top, and the smaller #4 and #5 bells are on the bottom. I could change em around, but it easier taking them on and off with the smaller bells are on the bottom.
Yeah. The horn code means that it is canadian tuned, it has five horn bells on the manifold, and it's on a low base. That's why its called a K5L. So the Mounting is the only difference.
WOW, that is an awesome horn!

That's really cool! Thanks for letting me know. I am sure it will look nice although I will miss the old classic look of it.

No Prob...IDK when it will be back. The current set is AMTK 510, Baggage Car, 3 horizons and AMTK 115.
Lot's of GE power for such a light train.

How do you know it's a K5L? Can you look it up someware. I guess the difference is the mounting?
danielsokolow 4 years ago
That horn is actually a K5L.
RCdash9 4 years ago
these engines use the same prime mover as the P42DC's they sound the same
Phill8281 4 years ago
If you see a freight train with a Dash 8 and a Dash 9 together, the Dash 8 revs higher than the Dash 9. No wonder why they barely use them anymore.
RCdash9 4 years ago
Maybe there was a shortage of equipment, and they didnt have any cab cars

love the horn so cool what horn is that?

I love the horn as well. I think it is a K5H but I am not sure. I took this train from L.A. Union Station and got off here in Santa Barbara.

You're Right. It is a K5H horn. Very nice P32-8BWH leading.
