Hardly corny. This show, which was around at the birth of TV, was full of humor and humanity, such that as many adults watched it as kids. Burr Tillstrom was a genius who did this show extemporaneously and did all the voices. Fran Alison played off of his characters. We all loved her. He was the inspiration for Jim Henson. This show is still a pleasure to watch.
To their credit, Kukla, Farn and Ollie did these commercials with undisguised tongue in cheek. Almost with sweetly smiling sarcasm. Their shows were full of hilarious puns, satire and double-meanings that had adult audiences as captivated as the kids.
Kukla Fran & Ollie - were Big in the day - Pre muppets - I remember siting in front of 16 inch Muntz TV floor model which was more like 12'' back in the late 40's - The whole family came twice a week to watch Kukla, Milton Burl, Ed Sullan, etc - great days as we exited the Depression & WW2 - My favorites included Hopalong Cassidy, Howdy Douty, Flash Gordon, Super Circus, Gene Autry, Uncle Johnny Coons, 2 Ton Baker & Garfield Goose among others. The radio was regulated to the back room.
Damn! They even had Kukla, Fran and Ollie shilling for RCA! Is there no shame? BTW, note the sexism of the day - that only women use washing machines!
@WSenator1 not sexism; just the way it was. A family could actually survive on 1 check back then. I speak to many blue-collar women today about how fortunate they are to be able to work, and it always amazes me that most wish they could stay home. Things we think of as normal today will be thought of as wrong or "politically incorrect" 10 yrs. down the road.
@anglomik - Point well taken. What used to get me, even when I was a boy and I didn't quite know what I was looking at or listening to, was when the quiz show host would ask a women what her occupation was (after a man said he was a cop, or a teacher, etc.), she would respond many times, "Oh, I'm just a housewife."
@WSenator1 Right. As if that wasn't a demanding and difficult job. My mom was a housewife for a time, then went to work, probably more out of financial necessasity. Believe you me, as a child I had to help w/both yard work and housework. Have a great week, Senator.
@anglomik - Couldn't agree with you more. All praise to the women who work - past, present and future. And to the men who love and help them! And a good week to you, too!
evolesel thats NOT a doobie its his 1tooth.he is a dragon.his full name is oliver j dragon. I used to watch this show when I was little.along with captain kangaroo and romper room.
Housewife size! Yes!...and they used to cook delicious meals and clean the house, too. And look after their own kids instead of holding everybody else responsible. Nobody got turned into a communist in school in those days, and pregnant teens - very unusual. Women were more than just a pain in the ass in those days.
Naw! Girls still got knocked up, but they were sent to "live with their Aunt" for nine months. But I do agree, parents had to take care of their own kids or there were consequences. Today, everyone expects the school to do it. Then they sue.
Lol - you're absolutely right! No kids got turned into damned commies. When women "were more than just a pain in the ass" their children turned into hotrodders, surfers, beatniks and hippies.

Here's the cast of "KUKLA, FRAN & OLLIE" delivering an "integrated" commercial for sponsor RCA Whirlrpool during one of their "PRODUCERS' SHOWCASE" presentations in the mid-'50s...
was that a skit inside the show part of a regular time-slot for advertising making it personalized or was it utterly disgusting product placement?

Note how during live television, it was truly funny? They broke each other up during the performance because they were part of their own audience.

I love the old commercials they did live during the old shows. They didn't do that in the color episodes.
