  • Does ivy damage the tree

  • Put it this way, I don't have any ivy on any of my apple trees and I would be surprised to see ivy on an apple tree being grown for fruit, since the earth round the base should be kept clear.

HOWEVER, as I often say, there are 2 reasons for growing an apple tree-to produce fruit, OR to look and enjoy it being there. Ivy growing up a big old tree that provides beauty, shade and room for bird boxes, and maybe a swing, will not be harmed by a moderate growth of ivy.

  • PS the ivy didn't ruin this tree, it is a sign of neglect, but the tree was sickened by other causes, mainly fungal and lack of light from being plabnted too close to pother trees.

Ivy does not kill trees, if you have a bit of ivy on a healthy tree and find it aesthetically pleasing, there is no problem
