It really annoys me how people give Carly such a hard time. She may not have been particularly artistic, but she was a master of the sport, no doubt. Then people commend gymnasts like Nadia Comaneci whose level of difficulty wouldn't suffice in high school meet today.
@PhenixJoe - theres a big difference tho (im sure you know) with technology and equipment (hence why Nadia's routines wouldnt be up to scratch for high school meets today) the artistry was there though for Comaneci, Patterson and all those high school competitors.....prob not !
@copper0 OK, so she didn't do an Arabian with a half turn but to say an Arabian with a half turn is the same as a full is wrong, no? Surely a full is a backwards rotating somersault with a full twist. And an Arabian is a forward rotating somersault? Add half a twist at the end and you will end up landing facing where you came from but it doesn't make it a full. Or am I totally wrong?
@tedsler yes, to any normal rational person that could be a good explanation; however, the code of points doesn't look at it this way. All a judge is capable of doing is counting rotations. Depending on when the 1/2 happened its either a layout 1/2 or an Arabian. If there is a 1/1 twist, no matter if it was broken into pieces, as in 1/2 then another 1/2, its still 360 of rotation. because an arabian has a 1/2, then you do another 1/2, you have effectively done 360 of rotation.
@copper0 but, but....that is just wrong...so you would get the same value for an Arabian with half twist as a full? Now, I am not saying dismounting the beam with a full isn't difficult, but surely an Arabian is more difficult but then if you add the extra half at the end it becomes the same as a full...wow...didn't know that. Thanks for explaining :)
@tedsler yeah, I don't like it, but, its the only way to keep the code somewhat useable. Every skill allowed to compete has a corresponding "hieroglyphic" attached to it that judges have to memorize. If all variations of twisting skills were allowed to be their own skill the code would become too much to memorize and apply effectively. So, they combine skills. For the men, a tuck, pike, layout, 1/2 and a full are all the same skill. it doesn't go up in value till a 1 1/2.
As strong a beam worker as Carly is, I wouldn't say this is perfect. I find most of the elite gymnasts from the US too athletic which makes them loose the elegant lines and artistry on beam in comparison to the Chinese and Eastern Europeans
Not perfect at all!! If you're going to choose Carly Patterson for the perfect beam routine at least put up her AA beam from the 2004 Olympics. That routine was better than this one.
Well good but not perfect you could see her off a bit and her landings were landed with bent knees and in her araibian her legs weren't together so why would u call this perfect its actually not very close
@cheekycatlover47 when a gymnast feels like they are going to fall they bend their knees this reduces the chance of them falling because they gain balance in it,but thats still not perfect
amazing! She is very good. Well landings. But not perfect. That doesn't mean not good. A perfect beam would be if she took more time and kept her legs strait. Great Job!
@MyStardazzle I hate it when people say "can you do better?" as if you have to BE an elite gymnast to make a critique. Really? Do you think all judges are elite athletes? No.
Really, this isn't even the best routine Carly ever did on beam. I'm surprised you took this and called it perfect. Either her AA beam performance or EF beam performance were better than this; even there she had stuck dismounts.
her ankle buckled on her arabian, small check on her layout, small check on her sheep jump and not a stuck dismount... Where is the perfect beam you promised? Ahhhh I know... check out Lysenko beam 1992 olypmic ef or kochecteva beam at 1996 worlds ... thats perfect beam for ya ;)

the commentator is a moron "its an Arabian with a half turn". An arabian IS a half in. There was no arabian here with a half, that would be a full.

She had skill but it didn't have the fluidity and feel that real beam virtuoso has.
Anna Pavlova, Catalina Ponor both have the thing that Patterson misses.

nice routine. it is just those checks on the dismounts. even if they dont take steps there are just so few zmeksal-like perfect landings anymore.
Xizora209 2 years ago
It's not an arabian with a half turn..
That would be a full
It's a double arabian or a double back with half turn..
NzenitraM 2 years ago
A double Arabian is a back half turn into double front. That and the double back with a half turn are two completely different skills.
