I don't think it's missing anything, it's just less depressive and therefore it sounds quite different. IMO, when New Order are at their best, they are as good as Joy Division. The problem is that New Order's motivation fluctuates a lot and therefore the quality varies quite a bit.

I don't know about happy. As much as many of New Order's songs sound upbeat on the first time out, the more you listen the more the songs seem sad. I never really feel happy when I listen to New Order, but rather melancholic.
