Maybe Ive forgotten the name and the address Of everyone Ive ever known Its nothing I regret Save it for another day Its the school exam and the kids have run away I would like a place I could call my own Have a conversation on the telephone Wake up every day that would be a start I would not complain of my wounded heart I was upset you see Almost all the time You used to be a stranger Now you are mine
I wouldnt even trust you Ive not got much to give Were dealing in the limits And we dont know who with You may think that Im out of hand That Im naive, Ill understand On this occasion, its not true Look at me, Im not you I would like a place I could call my own Have a conversation on the telephone Wake up every day that would be a start I would not complain of my wounded heart
I was a short fuse Burning all the time You were a complete stranger Now you are mine I would like a place I could call my own Have a conversation on the telephone Wake up every day that would be a start I would not complain about my wounded heart Just wait till tomorrow I guess thats what they all say Just before they fall apart
Oh, I just realised, the opening riff to this song is the same as the one used in "A Certain Romance" by the arctic monkets about 3:50 in. check if you want. :)

love this song!! not the same without Ian though, theres a little something in the music missing, in comparison to Joy Division of course, compared to other bands they stand tall.
I don't think it's missing anything, it's just less depressive and therefore it sounds quite different. IMO, when New Order are at their best, they are as good as Joy Division. The problem is that New Order's motivation fluctuates a lot and therefore the quality varies quite a bit.
I love so many New Order songs but this one has always been my favorite. Used to sing these lyrics to my boyfriend. :P "I was upset you see Almost all the time You used to be a stranger Now you are mine.... You may think that I'm out of hand That I'm naive, I'll understand On this occasion, it's not true Look at me, I'm not you.... I was a short fuse Burning all the time You were a complete stranger Now you are mine"
I don't know about happy. As much as many of New Order's songs sound upbeat on the first time out, the more you listen the more the songs seem sad. I never really feel happy when I listen to New Order, but rather melancholic.
Amazing intro. I can't stop listening to this song. This is definitely one of those songs you just can't express in words. For some reason, I am reminded of my childhood and have a deepened nostalgia for the past.
Put simply, New Order's music brings out varying emotions plus you can dance to it :P.
Growing up in the States in the '80's-and in the midwest at that-I had friends that turned me onto New Order. This song reminds me of listening to the cassettes on my Wlkman in bed at night. Now it gets me pumped at the gym as I work out with the big 4-0 leering at me;-)
I love this song....I also have a great quote on "regret" told to me by a friend..."When you get old, you don't regret the things you did, but the things you didn't do". Let us all have no regrets!
Hard press to pick a favorite from Republic. This one is up there though...along with 1963. I liked that whole album. I don't know why people trash it.
I knew New Order through Bizarre Love Triangle, but this song got me really interested in them. Ever since I first listened to it I became a fan. Sure this is a pretty radio-friendly, easy listening song but it's just so beautiful. Barney sounds really great here.
And it's also great to see them when they didn't yet go out of shape. Only Steve managed to remain slim all this time :P
1) This is one of a very few times where they actually mention the title of the song in the lyrics... the only others I can think of are Shellshock, Touched By The Hand Of God, Perfect Kiss and Shame/State of the Nation. There are probably others though.
2) I used to joke that the guy at 2:13 was Isaac Asimov. It does look like hi.
This is my happy song. I listen to it and it un-winds me I feel lighter mentally and physically. I love the sound of this song from the first note to the last. The driving base.I played at home while cleaning up. Next to every song I get hooked on I always come back to this one.
If anyone likes this song and video, I recommend 3 songs by OMD - 1. ¨Pandora´s Box¨ 2. ¨So in Love¨ 3. Ïf you Leave¨. All those songs are beautiful, nostalgic and the videos make you almost cry combined with the songs, specially Pandora´s Box.
Wonderful, marvellous, magnificient, glorious... If I could gather all adjectives to give to this song they still wouldn't be enough to express what I feel in my heart when I listen to it. New Order songs are part of my life.
These songs are nostalgic about how time passes how friends come and go .the music is heart renching and also plays your stomach as it strums along. These songs are necessary !
Man! I don't just hear this song... I FEEL it in the core of my being. Whenever i'm feeling down or out of control, this song centers me.... That's the best we can hope for from music...
this song... christ.. I remember when my sister introduced me to New Order a few years ago. I didn't think of them for a while.. until, I found an old "technique" tape in my house. I fell inlove. This is the kind of music you really.. feel. Does anyone know what I mean or is this only me?
Huh. And I thought "24" pioneered the use of all those simultaneous action windows. Is this song about a special agent saving Rome from a nuclear bomb? Bernard Sumner might pass as Jack Bauer...
this IS one of the best NO singles ever released, & still 1 of my favorite songs of theirs! it reminds me of a bus full of high school band kids singing along to it on my tape player on a bus trip :)

I always have had this feeling described in its chorus, specially at this time:
"I would like a place I could call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up every day that would be a start
I would not complain of my wounded heart"
It's talking about searching peacefully your own place in the world, isn't it? ;)
