i think of it this way... i'm isolating the character (birdie) from the context of the story and also separating the performer (scarlett johansson) from the role.
it's obsessive and also reflexive. i mean i'm totally "into" watching a young girl in her room -- it's a seductive image -- as well as conscious of it as a construction, a show. i sort of flip back and forth btwn losing myself in watching and being reminded that it's a performance.
