@yvibes - nearly any sata drive that is a 2.5 notebook drive will work. the only one i can think of is the velociraptor which is too thick. if you ever have heat issues , you might want to go with a 5400 rpm. i just bought a seagate(factory brand) momentus lp 320g 5400 rpm that i havent installed yet but have seen others using it. i think the psn freebies are fueling many hdd purchases this month lol. now if only i could remember the password to one of my old accnts with a bunch of dlc on it.

yeah. i was surprised, but the account is still there, as are any settings you changed in the system setup. Plus , it syncs with tropies. Game installs, game saves are not saved obviously.

Don't listen to him about it restoring your copy protected saves and previously downloaded games. Maybe it worked for him, but it obviously doesn't work for everyone. Maybe Sony put an end to being able to do this via firmware or something, but it transferred everything of mine except for what I stated above. If you do this, you may lose some of your saves. the games are no problem, because Sony lets you redownload them as many times as you need.
@dullard427 right because sony likes to pick on an individual and I just happened to be the lucky guy that the PS3 decided not to delete data off of...? gee that makes a lot of sense! I plug up my iomega Prestige Portable Hard Drive to back up my 120 PS3, it sees the hdd connected I start "back up", I say yes to the trophy, say yes to the copyright question, it says "Preparing... @Somesk8Mate thats only if you are formatting an external hard drive. windows will only format the drive in to 32 gb partitions. to solve this i suggest using another formatting program in stead of the windows program

@nigsplzz at least 1 Gig, for me i forgot to back it up so i accidentally erased all my data when I formatted my hard drive :( I'd recommend a 2 Gig Usb though, but just try it with a normal USB.

@yvibes - oh and 32gb is only a windows restriction, it can actually go to 2 tb i believe. not sure how high the ps3 can go though.

on a normal ps3 (not slim) a HDD Scorpio/320GB 2.5" SATA 5400rpm works (i dont know about the slim), just make sure it's a HDD 2,5 inch SATA 5400 rpm

nice vid !! got a question ,my ps3 just died(ylod) on me now i bought a new ps3 ,i took out the old ps3's hdd cuz it has all my game saves, game DLC's and games that i bought from the psn now i want to get all the data of my old ps3's hdd on to my new one and i'm getting a 500hdd for the new one too.once installed the new hdd can i just get a 2.5 hdd enclosure for the the old one and take the usb cable from it hook it up to my new ps3 and take all that data from the old one and put it on the

Don't listen to him about it restoring your copy protected saves and previously downloaded games. Maybe it worked for him, but it obviously doesn't work for everyone. Maybe Sony put an end to being able to do this via firmware or something, but it transferred everything of mine except for what I stated above. If you do this, you may lose some of your saves. the games are no problem, because Sony lets you redownload them as many times as you need.

@dullard427 right because sony likes to pick on an individual and I just happened to be the lucky guy that the PS3 decided not to delete data off of...? gee that makes a lot of sense! I just ported my 500GB from the fat PS3 in the vid to my slim 2 months ago and again, nothing happened (just lucky? again??). don't go on blaming your mistake on my video. It may not work for everyone true, but it works for everyone who followed the instructions. that's what instructions are for, to "follow"

take not he backs up data on the external hard drive first. Then he opens the new hard drive to put in the ps3. I made a mistake no big deal but no more data lolz.

I plug up my iomega Prestige Portable Hard Drive to back up my 120 PS3, it sees the hdd connected I start "back up", I say yes to the trophy, say yes to the copyright question, it says "Preparing... Please Wait", but stays on this for so far 15 mins! Should I just let it go & see what it does for longer or is something wrong??

@Somesk8Mate thats only if you are formatting an external hard drive. windows will only format the drive in to 32 gb partitions. to solve this i suggest using another formatting program in stead of the windows program

Ok whenever I tried to Restore all my backed-up data...at like 70% an error occurs...none of my games or installation data was restored, but everything else was. So I guess I'll have to re-download... :(

@nigsplzz at least 1 Gig, for me i forgot to back it up so i accidentally erased all my data when I formatted my hard drive :( I'd recommend a 2 Gig Usb though, but just try it with a normal USB.

@doomezday Because you can't copy downloaded games onto the external HDD and PS1 games and Minis can only be copied onto a PSP.
