im a ravens fan but thats not my reason to choose ed regardless he is better, ed played strong safety for his first 3 yrs and once he got injured he played free safety can troy play free i dont think so.

I gotta say Ed Reed simply by margin of superiority. Strong Safeties do play closer to the line of scrimmage, and cover Tight Ends a lot. The job of a Free Safety is simple, don't let anyone past you. You look at pass coverage, Ed is just better. Troy can make more athletic plays such as the diving interceptions he does, but Ed is so good of a pass defender that he'll be in position to make that interception without having to dive. He's completely mastered baiting and jumping routes.

@jaymac508 In Reed's first 3 seasons he played SS, and damn well. 21 interceptions in his first 3 years was at SS and was more into the running game just like Troy but realized how good he was at ball hawking so moved him to FS. As a ravens fan i think polamalu is the better player atm. If u take polamalu off the steeler defense they almost become a c+ D but with him on the squad it bumps automatically to an A+. Reed has suffered through some injuries but nonetheless is still my fav player and the best FS out there. Id say polamalu is better atm bc of his versatility but in terms of team need it can vary. Need a pass covg guy? get reed. Need a run support guy? get TP. it would be crazy if both played on the same team.

@chuckhowe Polamalu destroys Reed because of those one handed scoop interceptions which are freakish in nature....and the way Troy jumps over the entire offensive line to stop the QB in a quarterback sneak is also freakish. His intensity is at a whole other level than Reed's, stats on paper don't mean shit...just look at the Chargers and the Cowboys.

They are both truely beasts and both favorite players of mine (Reed especially because he went to the U)... However, I must credit the Troy Polamalu as the better player because without his presence on the field, the Steeler's defense is extremely lacking... Without Ed Reed on the field, the Ravens still maintain and even their backup safeties (Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura) are pretty good... However, can anyone even name Troy's back up???

OK, now I got your reply, and after watching Polamalu for a while I have to admit he's insane. All I'm saying is, safetys should be more for pass coverage which is why Ed Reed would be overall a better Safety. Plus, even though Troy is obviously better than Reed in run defense, Reed can still make some pretty nice tackles.
i would say ed reed is a crazy ball hawk and as such leads polamalu in interceptions. however, they both have similar stats in passes defensed. so troy breaks up his share of passes too. the interceptions probably give the edge to ed in the pass defense category, but in my opinion, not by as large of a margin as most people think
Reed is a free safety, polamalu is a strong safety. 2 Different positions with different responsibilities, they shouldn't and can't be properly compared.
i'll wait to see what comes of the allegations... so far no charges have been filed. I will say that if he is guilty, i want him off of the Steelers.
I wouldn't be too excited about Stallworth, he hasn't really performed that well since leaving New Orleans... not to mention he has just had some legal troubles of his own. Boldin is a big pick-up, it will be interesting to see how open he can get without Fitz on the other side of the field... Boldin could be the guy Flacco needs.

umm ed reed. reed played ss for his first three years and r comparable to troys 6 years as an ss. i love them both and respect them both. and i loved how troy said without hesitation that ed is the better safety. but i still like ed reed better
well there was injuries along the defensive line and in the linebacking core too... but troy was the most significant injury and you could tell the secondary wasn't the same without him. I think that alone shows how great a player he is. The Steelers were only a step or two off in most games they lost this year, when everyone is healthy for next season, don't sleep on them, they're still dangerous.

Lott played both corner and safety... and his stats look more like polamalu's than reed's... it's tough to compare reed to polamalu because of their respective styles, and it's hard to compare ronnie lott to either one because he also played corner.

I gotta say Ed Reed simply by margin of superiority. Strong Safeties do play closer to the line of scrimmage, and cover Tight Ends a lot. The job of a Free Safety is simple, don't let anyone past you. You look at pass coverage, Ed is just better. Troy can make more athletic plays such as the diving interceptions he does, but Ed is so good of a pass defender that he'll be in position to make that interception without having to dive. He's completely mastered baiting and jumping routes.

I dont think you can compare because they play COMPLETELY two different positions.. ED gets more picks because he is more athletic and his position allows him to free lance more often .. @jaymac508 In Reed's first 3 seasons he played SS, and damn well. 21 interceptions in his first 3 years was at SS and was more into the running game just like Troy but realized how good he was at ball hawking so moved him to FS. Ill take Reed over any Safety in history any day. Not putting anything negative on Troy because a great football player he is.

As a ravens fan i think polamalu is the better player atm. If u take polamalu off the steeler defense they almost become a c+ D but with him on the squad it bumps automatically to an A+. Reed has suffered through some injuries but nonetheless is still my fav player and the best FS out there. Id say polamalu is better atm bc of his versatility but in terms of team need it can vary. Need a pass covg guy? get reed. Need a run support guy? get TP. it would be crazy if both played on the same team.

@lanasa8 reed had more picks as a strong safety, that's for sure... but Troy has only really started getting a lot of interceptions over the last few years... I think a lot of that has to do with how Pittsburgh's scheme has changed over the years... Not trying to say that polamalu is the better ball-hawk, just saying that I think that the stats don't completely do his ability justice, especially when you place the emphasis on picks...

His intensity is at a whole other level than Reed's, stats on paper don't mean shit...just look at the Chargers and the Cowboys.

They are both truely beasts and both favorite players of mine (Reed especially because he went to the U)... However, I must credit the Troy Polamalu as the better player because without his presence on the field, the Steeler's defense is extremely lacking... Without Ed Reed on the field, the Ravens still maintain and even their backup safeties (Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura) are pretty good... However, can anyone even name Troy's back up???

At this point tp is better. But stretch out their careers college and pro and it's obviously Ed reed. To the steelers ravens talk... Ravens are looking good just a lack of DB's. Steelers... The loss of santonio holmes and the 4 game suspension of big Ben will be tough. Still have Hines. Have to see how mike Wallace develops. Your defense at the end of last season was horrible should improve.

Reed has never played for a # 1 Pass Defense and of the two times he played for a # 1 Defense the pass D, on one occassion, didn't even finish top 5.
Troy has played for 3 # 1 Defenses, each time the Pass D finishing top 5, including a # 1 pass Defense.

All I'm saying is, safetys should be more for pass coverage which is why Ed Reed would be overall a better Safety. i would say ed reed is a crazy ball hawk and as such leads polamalu in interceptions. however, they both have similar stats in passes defensed. so troy breaks up his share of passes too. the interceptions probably give the edge to ed in the pass defense category, but in my opinion, not by as large of a margin as most people think

I wouldn't be too excited about Stallworth, he hasn't really performed that well since leaving New Orleans... not to mention he has just had some legal troubles of his own. Boldin is a big pick-up, it will be interesting to see how open he can get without Fitz on the other side of the field... Boldin could be the guy Flacco needs.

well there was injuries along the defensive line and in the linebacking core too... but troy was the most significant injury and you could tell the secondary wasn't the same without him. I think that alone shows how great a player he is. The Steelers were only a step or two off in most games they lost this year, when everyone is healthy for next season, don't sleep on them, they're still dangerous.

Lott played both corner and safety... and his stats look more like polamalu's than reed's... it's tough to compare reed to polamalu because of their respective styles, and it's hard to compare ronnie lott to either one because he also played corner.

and it was a bonehead play... when a player misses a tackle or falls for a pump fake, he's trying to make a play. the difference between you and me is that i can admit ed reed is a greta player. you need troy to be a scrub in order to prove your point. but there are many members of the media that feel the comparison is fair. guess who votes on the players that get into the hall of fame? you guessed it, a panel of sportswriters... sportswriters aren't always right, but people listen to them.

But anyways both are amazing players, but they play different postions. However Ed Reed does bothe well, and can play either, it all comes down to who's gonna make the winning play. well, i would contend that with Baltimore/DC being the larger market that it probably evens out the plane. Pittsburgh has the storied tradition, but Baltimore has a larger market.

Troy is way better hands down, not just the better player but one of the best defensive players of all time, he's always around the ball and makes crucial plays to win games everywhere on the field, he doesn't just get stats he gives his teammates opportunities to get stats, turnovers, touchdowns, and makes the team way much better as evidenced by the Steelers playing much better and winning games and championships when Troy's playing, Polamalu's impact tackles and ints helped won 2 superbowls

ed reed is just as important as troy is on the field. look at him this year - lost 2 great CB's and 1 solid DB, and he's still finding ways to make big plays.
i think they're both 2 of the best football players to ever play - and i hate to say this, because i'm a ravens fan (check my page), but i'd have to give the SLIGHT edge to troy just because he makes more solid tackles.
