Turns out Dom Capers never wanted to draft David Carr. His recommendation going into the '02 Draft was to pick either Julius Peppers or Albert Haynesworth. Disagreeing with him; Bob McNair and Charley Casserley decided that a high-profile QB would bring more media exposure to the team.
Four years later; McNair now runs the business end of the Texans franchise and Casserley was run out of football altogether. Capers however, went on to build playoff contending defenses for 2 separate teams.
As a Texans fan, I can agree that our O-Line was pretty bad, BUT, there was no reason for him to have been as bad as he did from 2003 onward. With AJ at his side, he should have been making completions left and right.
I hate when people say Carr wasn't a bust because of the sack totals. He held on to the ball too long look at difference between him and Schaub in sacks. He had Andre Johnson yet still put up those shit numbers. As the #1 overall pick you should be making pro bowls annually
You have to remember, The Texans were fucked over by the Jaguars when they took Gary Walker and Seth Payne...they were forced to take Boselli.....dumbasses
@Htown75: could you please explain how the Texans were forced to take Boselli? Because from what I remember they took Boselli first overall in the expansion draft out of all of the players who were eligible that year. The Texans wanted someone to protect whomever there quarterback was going to be.
@Ducksrule123 how about his o-line? pretty much non existant. it doesnt matter if a top 3 QB played with a top 3 WR, if he doesnt have a decent o-line to give him time to throw, he will not succeed
this was the first draft i watched in its entirety..i was 12 at the time. i agree with most of you on carr, he was put on a pitiful expansion team right off the bat with no o-line whatsoever. it was just a recipe for disaster. i really liked harrington out of college, but he was truly a bust. he was given the weapons and countless chances and just never delivered.
It's been said already, but Carr with a better, more solid offensive line would have produced better results. I don't blame this on the Texans either though really.
They were an expansion team. Although a healthy Tony Boselli would have helped.
David Carr was a bust because of his O-Line he was a tremendous athlete I live in a town about 20 min from Fresno and I got his autograph and Bernard Berrians they were good Carrs bro is a QB at Fresno St now and hopefully he will be a good player and hopefully Tylar Bray is too I played against him last year when my school played Kingsburg High and he was a beast he has an arm and is hella tall so hopefully they both become great athletes
I guess the Panthers made the right choice. I remember saying Harrington was a better option cause we were 1-15 the year before and needed a QB. Good thing I wasn't GM.
david carr isnt a bust...yet. he never had all the right tools in houston. sure he had andre johnson, and him alone is a difference maker, but his line didnt help carr out. and when ur line lets u down, then that pro bowl WR is a nobody because he cant stay upright. he has a good opportunity to revive his career in sf. if alex smith flops this sunday night, he could and should get the start. he has a pro bowl running back, a damn good TE, and some WR's who will help out. and most of all, an OL
Carr is a bust, BUT i think alot of the blame has to go on the fact that he was sacked over 100 times in his first two years, that's not good for any young passer. he likely still sees defensive ends in his sleep.
@mwcarolina I wouldn't call him a bust. After looking at some highlights of him, it looks like he can make all of those tough, out of position, throws. The Texans just could never really use him correctly... And his receivers were mediocre.
Fun Fact: In 75 starts with Houston, David Carr was sacked 249 times.
Well, he had Andre Johnson, the reason i say Carr busted though is because after he left Houston, he never improved, the sacks in his career really hurt his career badly.
Pretty funny to look back at Kiper's scouting report and realize how inaccurate it proved to be. Pro: Maturity/Leadership? It's no secret that Carr didn't put in the time in the film room. It's been mentioned by former teammates. Maturity? Always throwing his offensive line under the bus when he had problems getting rid of the football or feeling the pressure. Just goes to show that there is no such thing as a so-called "Draft Expert"...and I am referring to one Melvin Kiper.
I never understood the hype around David Carr. The guy led a mediocre Fresno State team. Why was Mike Williams such a bust? Did he just not care about playing in the NFL?
did that guy say that none of these QBs would be a bust 3 or 4 years later. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
@blldgs101 yeah man being expected to do good things when you are drafted by a brand new expansion team is wayyy too much with like no talent around him and a bad o line meant a lot of sacks
I remember watching Harrington play in his final bowl game in college. He was all over the place, hitting receivers in stride, threading the needle, pumping up the team, just looked amazing. I thought, wow, be great if the Lions would get him (lol), but im sure he won't fall to #3 (lol again).
He got to the NFL and just couldnt do it. Throws in the dirt, afraid to get hit, couldnt throw deep, hard, anything. Wow...that sucked.
0:44 the only true star outta them was freeney and peppers (mayb),david car i think woulda been a starter still if he ended up in a matt ryan type situation, instead of that expansion o-line, the williams were both playin like pro bowlers in the 1st 5 yrs of their careers but then fell off and peppers is gud but hes playin like shyt right now, he obviously doesnt wanna play for carolina anymore. and Quentin isnt as gud as a #5 pick but hes a solid starter.hed start on a third of the nfl teams
these "experts" are never right. Charley Casserly was the GM for the texans, now he doesn't work for the nfl, not counting the nfl network. trust me im from sf, where we were duped by everyone who loved alex smith.
he actually did pretty good on the texans. i wouldnt call him a bust cuz it more his lines fault he never had time to make a play. not saying his like great but he couldnt play to his potential with that line
If you take the time to look back at the 05 draft, the Texans really had nobody else to draft. The needed to draft a franchise QB to build their new team. No matter how good Peppers or Jammer would end up to be, David Carr, at the time, was the consensus number one pick, but sadly for the Texans the pick ultimately did not pan out.
Carr never did get a fair shot, but a lot of that was on him. He wasnt able to grasp the offense and at times, looked very lost. He also wasnt much of a leader, was quiet and distant. He got shell shocked, and it gave him terrible habits. I dont think he was every able to really read a defense.
He held the ball too long - he would have taken sacks no matter where he went. But yea, unfortunately, Houston's lack of pass blocking made it very apparent
damn that was a stacked draft, too bad conventional thinking for a expansion team is to get a QB first... man julius peppers, albert haynesworth, ed reed, john henderson, bryant mckinnie/ levi jones.... disaster from the start for the texans, should of solidified the o-line first with bryant mckinnie or the d-line with peppers or haynesworth.

you can't blame David Carr and Joey Harrington, they went to bad teams, they had complex offenses, almost every qb that is a rookie has to know a entire playbook and they had no talent around them,Carr's O-line was terrible,he set the record for most qb sacked in a season then broke it the following year, before you draft a qb,invest in some o-linemen and some quality recievers like what Atlanta did with Matt Ryan.
actually it was carrs fault he got sacked so many times, he held the ball too long. he had the same problem in carolina when delhome was out for the year. schaub didn't have this problem in houston when he became the starter.
yES AND NO. Any QB starting for an expansion team would of gotten killed. Carr was a rookie and he was killed. Carr's and the O-line's fault. Carr did improve from year 1 to year 3 but then, it all hit the fan. Just saying
wow carr being compared to troy. its fun watching these things a couple years later. its actually funny how much time they wasted comparing carr and harrington. mel was all over them. espn should go back and look at this tape and fire him for it lol
this video makes me sad. it was never anything physical with carr, it was all in his mind. after he got beat so badly the first couple years, when it did get to where he had better protection, i think he was just too gun shy. I kept hopeing he'd pull out of it and be the QB I knew he could, but alas. here's hopeing schaub can do it!
Yeah, i'm sure even Mel thought that was a hell of a limb to go out on when he said that. Fans here in Houston though just bought in to it. We were so giddy over having football back, he could've convinced us we were meat popsicles and we would've bought it. When Mel Kiper put that much stock into David Carr we were all like.. You know maybe he is the guy after all.. Until it's 6 years later and he's on his 3rd team :/
Same here PhillyEagles. I'm an eagles fan too and i can't wait for draft day. It's like a national holiday for me. I know we're gonna get a real playmaker this year.
There was 3 bust at quarterback in the 1st round in the 2002 nfl draft, david carr texans, joey harrington lions, and Patrick Ramsey with the redskins
"I think when you look at Carr and Harrington 3, 4 years down the road, you are not going to call any one of these two players a bust or a disappointment."
ok guys we didnt know that Carr would suck so just shut up saying that We shouldve taken Peppers or Freeny over Carr becasue we didnt know so shut up guys
Boy, this draft was sure lopsided as far as offense/defense goes. While Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, Roy Williams and Quentin Jammer have all been studs, David Carr, Joey Harrington and Mike Williams were all monumental busts. Too bad the Texans couldn't hold off expansion for another year and draft Carson Palmer.
Remember, David Carr was thrown to the wolves to start his rookie season without any time to develop, while Carson spent his rookie season behind Jon Kitna, and this is why he is such a successful QB now. I know Peyton Manning was a starter as a rookie but, 1: It's Peyton Manning, and 2: He was'nt that great in his rook season.
David Carr. BUST. Just look at Schaub and Rozenfels. Carr can't blame the Texans for his failures anymore. Delhomme was doing fine until he got hurt and Carr gets his golden opportunity and what does he do, he blows it. Again, David Carr:BUST
Why the hell did Mel Kiper compare Carr to Aikman?? just because they both wear number 8?? other than that I see no comparisons between these two, obviously we all know who had the better career.
umm well first off courtney brown was 2000 and I don't belive a chris leaf ever existed..? Their was a Ryan Leaf who was drafted #2 in 1998 the manning draft and their was a Chris Leak who was taken in the 7th round last year...yeah..

Carr is a good Quarterback, but you cant be a good Quarterback and win games when your Offensive line is constantly
getting you sacked year in and year out. During the
time Carr was with the Texans he had the worst line
of any team getting sacked 40-50 times per year its not his fault. Carr lead the leage in Quarterback Ratings stat in 2004 and 2006
which prooved even with a sorry line he could manage something. Carr needs
a restart fresh somewhere
give em another shot yo.

David Carr=back up NYG
Joey harrington third string SAINTs

tornado505 3 years ago
Looking back (of course), it is hilarious they were comparing Carr and Harrington. What awful QB's they were in the NFL.
kisscactus 3 years ago
Now there were a few good superstars in this one.....Quentin Jammer, Roy Williams, Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney.
japs209 3 years ago

wow carr being compared to troy. its fun watching these things a couple years later. its actually funny how much time they wasted comparing carr and harrington. mel was all over them. espn should go back and look at this tape and fire him for it lol

their wasn't really a quarterback in that draft i really thought would help the texans
rohndra 3 years ago
Dwight Freeney was the best pick
abuasmar 3 years ago
this video makes me sad. it was never anything physical with carr, it was all in his mind. after he got beat so badly the first couple years, when it did get to where he had better protection, i think he was just too gun shy. I kept hopeing he'd pull out of it and be the QB I knew he could, but alas. here's hopeing schaub can do it!

carr was a huge bust

David Carr??? We don't deserve a football team. HOW 'BOUT DEM COWBOYS?!?!?!
SWeggemann 3 years ago
I just noticed something on the video - at 8:45 Mel says that in 3 to 4 years he doesn't see either Joey Harrington or David Carr as a bust.
Hahahahaha - he really called that one. *chokes* As much as i love Mel, he really blew that comment.
red03mitsu 3 years ago 2
Yeah, i'm sure even Mel thought that was a hell of a limb to go out on when he said that. Fans here in Houston though just bought in to it. We were so giddy over having football back, he could've convinced us we were meat popsicles and we would've bought it. When Mel Kiper put that much stock into David Carr we were all like.. You know maybe he is the guy after all.. Until it's 6 years later and he's on his 3rd team :/
dethro96 3 years ago 2
Same here PhillyEagles. I'm an eagles fan too and i can't wait for draft day. It's like a national holiday for me. I know we're gonna get a real playmaker this year.

Bryant Mckinnie is a great OT
oliverr16 4 years ago
There was 3 bust at quarterback in the 1st round in the 2002 nfl draft, david carr texans, joey harrington lions, and Patrick Ramsey with the redskins
benyce86 4 years ago 2
Wow, 2 QB busts in one draft, Harrington and Carr?! If you like the NFL Draft, check out the DurtyBirdz and add us.
DurtyBirdz 4 years ago
Mike Wlliams at tackle(4th overall) was also a bust. Only played 4 seasons with the team before being released.
Dumblewh0re 3 years ago
To this day, I can't understand what the Vikings saw in Bryant McKinnie. HE SUCKS!
He not only held out for half of his rookie year, he is also overrated and way overpaid. I wish the Vikings would get rid of him one way or another.

"I think when you look at Carr and Harrington 3, 4 years down the road, you are not going to call any one of these two players a bust or a disappointment."
Owned.
appleyard46 4 years ago
of course Mel Kiper isn't going to call the top 2 rated quarterbacks of the draft busts.
killz4fun08 4 years ago
ok guys we didnt know that Carr would suck so just shut up saying that We shouldve taken Peppers or Freeny over Carr becasue we didnt know so shut up guys
littlekid137 4 years ago
I don't think Freeney was looked into that much. Indianapolis took a gamble, and it payed off.
EricAKATheBelgianGuy 3 years ago
Boy, this draft was sure lopsided as far as offense/defense goes. While Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, Roy Williams and Quentin Jammer have all been studs, David Carr, Joey Harrington and Mike Williams were all monumental busts. Too bad the Texans couldn't hold off expansion for another year and draft Carson Palmer.
colbert12 4 years ago
Remember, David Carr was thrown to the wolves to start his rookie season without any time to develop, while Carson spent his rookie season behind Jon Kitna, and this is why he is such a successful QB now. I know Peyton Manning was a starter as a rookie but, 1: It's Peyton Manning, and 2: He was'nt that great in his rook season.
ThrowItPac 4 years ago 2
David Carr. BUST. Just look at Schaub and Rozenfels. Carr can't blame the Texans for his failures anymore. Delhomme was doing fine until he got hurt and Carr gets his golden opportunity and what does he do, he blows it. Again, David Carr:BUST
BigBoy1044 4 years ago
Why the hell did Mel Kiper compare Carr to Aikman?? just because they both wear number 8?? other than that I see no comparisons between these two, obviously we all know who had the better career.
SlickVick23 4 years ago
That side-arm throwing son of a bitch should pay us for letting him stay here. Get rid of the freaking ball David.
dethro96 4 years ago
Lol and 8:50 is funny to just because of wat happened
darkid12 4 years ago
I think 1997 was weakest top 15 in my mind I mean courtney brown, chris leaf many more...
darkid12 4 years ago
umm well first off courtney brown was 2000 and I don't belive a chris leaf ever existed..? Their was a Ryan Leaf who was drafted #2 in 1998 the manning draft and their was a Chris Leak who was taken in the 7th round last year...yeah..
aw0117 3 years ago
Chris Leak wasn't drafted he signed a rookie free agent contract with the Bears for the offseason
Fa1enAnge11 3 years ago 2
I think you're referring to Troy Smith who was taken in the 7th round.
SWeggemann 3 years ago
Actually Troy Smith Was Taken In The 5th Round 174th Overall
