I can still remember the sound of Frank Zappa and the Mothers in the background of my childhood - playing on the stereo - my baby sitters and their boyfriends in the rec room... I wish I could go back.
Zappa taught me so much about phrasing. Whenever I play people tell me that I must know my scales, I tell them I just play what I would want to hear. The fretboard is a series of roadways and a song is juat a destination. There are, of course, multiple ways to get to places via road. I like to think of Zappa as the kind of guy who would take the scenic route regardless of how long it takes.
My guitar teacher once told me (after several weeks of musical theory lessons about playing "outside" - trying to get a fusion-y sound, etc) "Remember when I first told you to know these scales?" I replied, "Yeah..". And he essentially told me to throw them out the window. Now I understand why playing all the notes can be important and to always make sure I eventually end back on the scale. I think Zappa was the master of playing outside to develop a great sound. Train your ears, you'll get it
if he played as good as vinnie percussionalizes well.......(im glad he and jeff berlin show em whats wat. takes more than pizza and coffee to raise 5 kids.
i got the bootleg very early that days, since than it is the loveliest solo, like being in love, he ever played, no overdubs whether it sounds like them.
Zappa is my number one influence in life, in music, politics, and the general outlook on life. Most likely the greatest overall musician who ever lived, and that's not just an opinion, if you look at his life achievements in music, it will be difficult to disagree.
@btyremanable robert fripp had some INSANE sustain skills before he started using sustainer pickups, check out some of the late 60's early 70's king crimson and the frippertronics albums.
@btyremanable Not sure that dissonant modality equates to genius, although I have to admit he has some killer technique. As regards "controlled sustained feedback" - I guess you've never listened to Jimi Hendrix before??

Technically, without a doubt. Zappa wasn't a virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination, and he'd tell you so. Musically, though, that's another matter all together, in my opinion.
More people need to check zappa out. He is the greatest composer ever in my personal opinion. This guy was so far from any of the main stream that it was just truely spectacular that he achieved such a status.
@asins "He is the greatest composer ever in my personal opinion."
Greater than, say, Beethoven or Bach? I don't see how that's possible. I can't think of any work of Zappa's that is better in all musical respects than the Ninth or Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, etc., etc., etc.
Zappa is one of my top five favorite things in life. I am so pleased that his music exists. Can't bear the thought of having existed in a non-Zappa period of history.
agree with seechabboy. frank would be rippins all the wall street DC guys new assholes, no one else had the balls to do it, and make great f'in music in the process
pj232pj: I guess it was just another token of his...but I wish to fuck this stuff was available on cd - perhaps we should collectively get together and bribe Timmo's ass and get him to release this on cd...I mean, where the hell does he get this stuff, huh? Thxs again T!
I used to have the entirety of this show on my erstwhile computer. Now, I love Logeman's drumming during the written parts of the songs, but he has no clue how to respond during Zappa' solos; he's certainly no match for Vinnie's rythmic fecundity, but at the very least, he's more inspiring than Jimmy Carl Black.
Yes, that's Frank!!
Have a look at his nose!!

Saw FZ at the Ahoy in 1979. 3 hour concert, no breaks or intermissions and sheer genus. The encore was over 30 minutes long.
