  • Great film, I had never heard of, then watched by accident on TCM one afternoon. Quite stunning. Of course, with music by Leslie Bricusse and John Williams, how could it be anything else.

  • The musical remake of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" will never come close to the magnificence of that 1939 film with Robert Donat & Greer Garson. One of the greatest films I ever saw and Donat's Oscar was most certainly deserved.

  • So this is where the song from Sherlock Holmes the Musical originally came from. Nice. :)

  • From the movie Goodbye Mr. Chips which was up for Best Picture acadamy awards 1969. Songwriter was the great Leslie Bricusse (Dr. Doolittle,Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor, he also wrote" The Candy Man" performed by Sammy Davis Jr. which was played on the radio around the world in the early seventies! ,Wrote Somewhere in my memory for Home Alone, wrote all the music for Scrooge starring Albert Finney, worked with John Williams on the movie " Hook" etc.

  • Will they EVER release this wonderful soundtrack on CD? Is this film available on DVD yet? I love this version of the story. I believe this song was lifted from this movie in inserted into the Sherlock Holmes B'way musical BAKER STREET.

  • @mnactr The S/T was released a few years ago, as a 3CD set from Film Score Monthly. Well worth the money, you can still buy it as far as I can see. And I didn't know about the song being recycled for that musical - which sounds appropriate.

  • @mnactr A million years ago-I had the lp recording to Baker Street-I think there was a song called "Im In London Again ".

  • @mnactr It wasn't in Baker Street, it was put into "Sherlock Holmes: The Musical". "Baker Street: A Musical Adventure of Sherlock Holmes" is a very different musical.

  • @mnactr Actually, Leslie Briccusse re-used the song in his musical, SHERLOCK HOLMES, in the late 80's, early 90's, which never made it to Broadway. BAKER STREET was on B'way in 1965.

  • @mnactr Goodye Mr. Chips is available on DVD--I bought it about a year ago.

  • @mnactr Actually it was used by Leslie Bricusse in his Sherlock Holmes - the Musical. Even odder, it was not in the stage version of Goodbye Mr. Chips. Which was written before Sherlock Holmes!

  • @mnactr There is a 3 CD set available featuring all the music from the film Goodbye Mr Chips, try Amazon.com

  • The '69 version cannot come close to the magnificence of the '39 release with Robert Donat & Gree Garson. One of the greatest movies of all time.

  • @39rc6cf I would not compare them. Two different things. Both beautiful.

  • @veraswimming , I stand by my comment and by the way, I love Petula's voice.

  • love the look on peter's face at the end!

  • this is so something Andrew LLoyd would do- look at the production values...and dancing guards- it screams money and WE LOVE IT!

  • Nicely done number but the song is lacking.

  • we have it here on dvd....would that work across the pond- come on everyone shold have this in their collection!

  • OK, this number is just a knockout- give em the ole razzle dazzle!

  • Just heard this on Radio 2 from the broadcast on the 25th April and love it! I want o sing it on stage, it'd be so much fun! And London is pretty darn wicked!! :-)

  • I fear that anyone visiting the British capital today is more likely to find themselves in Londonistan. So sad.

  • @simikess

I feel the same. I went up there last year to catch the Eurostar, and of about half the people we past on the street, (and I don't want to sound racist or anything) most of them weren't speaking English and/or were from an ethnic minority. I'm pretty a tolerant person, but I felt that the so-called "multicultural society" is just a lot of other cultures replacing Great Britain.

  • I sure hope it doesn't become, "London is Mecca..."

  • just fantastic i also would love to visit london. my favourite city. , and pet my number 1 i adore her.,.love you pet you are wonderful .

  • A great song for a great city. How nostalgic I feel. But alas,I fear that the London of the song is no more...

  • Perhaps-but we can and do carry that London in our hearts !

  • John Williams :)

  • Just imagine running to lowered from the rafters . Especially like all the bright young things-dripping with drama-dontcha know .

  • Great film...never got it's due and Peter and Pet were so wonderful.....talk about being underrated!

  • London is London! The most beautiful city in the world! Very beautiful film!

  • Damn right ! My greatest wish is to visit London - and someday ...I will.

  • I wish this could be done live. Imagine the costume changes. And how fast she'd be running backstage. Hahha. I also love the combination of different pieces of choreography at the end. That's a big favorite dynamic of mine.

  • Wonderful number from a sadly neglected film. hope upon hope it is released in UK before long - it is in the States, SO WHY NOT HERE??

  • Pet was brilliant and is a most delightful individual to chat with. This number ranks with Vera Lynn and "There Will Always Be an England." An ex took me to see her while in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria Empire Room. An unforgettable evening!

  • Love this clip. Too bad no one will re-release this movie. I'd love to buy it

  • It keeps being 're-scheduled'. Fingers crossed a DVD will see the light of day.

  • Erm, I didn't say it was a bad thing, don't be so blooming aggressive! Honestly, some people!

  • indeed she was brillant in Sunset- and she was terrific in this film- what a stuning production! Great score, Peter and Pet rocked!

  • i love everything Pet does. Saw her in Sunset Blvd. awesome performance!!!!

  • Thank you -- Petula's brilliant.

  • I danced in this film when I was 18!!--glad to say Im still tapping. Also met my best friend in this film and we are still the best of friends 40 years on.

  • Were you one of Mr Chips students,or in the adult chorus?

  • In fact, Maestro John Williams "only" composed the underscore for the movie but he made arrangments and orchestrations for the songs (lyrics and music by Leslie Bricusse).

  • THANK YOU SO SO MUCH - I love this song!!

  • Thankyou for sharing this great clip, my favorite sequence from " Goodbye Mr. Chips".

I've been trying to find the movie forever since I saw it back in theatre in 1969

  • It's extravagant even by music hall standards, surely!!

  • I love how unrealistic musicals are in films. That would be the entire budget of the musical spent in this one song!

  • and your're point? IT'S A MOVIE.....FANTASY?

  • Lovely number. Didn't Claude appear in this number as one of the soldiers standing in the sentry boxes?
