Great film, I had never heard of, then watched by accident on TCM one afternoon. Quite stunning. Of course, with music by Leslie Bricusse and John Williams, how could it be anything else.
The musical remake of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" will never come close to the magnificence of that 1939 film with Robert Donat & Greer Garson. One of the greatest films I ever saw and Donat's Oscar was most certainly deserved.
From the movie Goodbye Mr. Chips which was up for Best Picture acadamy awards 1969. Songwriter was the great Leslie Bricusse (Dr. Doolittle,Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor, he also wrote" The Candy Man" performed by Sammy Davis Jr. which was played on the radio around the world in the early seventies! ,Wrote Somewhere in my memory for Home Alone, wrote all the music for Scrooge starring Albert Finney, worked with John Williams on the movie " Hook" etc.
Will they EVER release this wonderful soundtrack on CD? Is this film available on DVD yet? I love this version of the story. I believe this song was lifted from this movie in inserted into the Sherlock Holmes B'way musical BAKER STREET.
@mnactr The S/T was released a few years ago, as a 3CD set from Film Score Monthly. Well worth the money, you can still buy it as far as I can see. And I didn't know about the song being recycled for that musical - which sounds appropriate.
@mnactr It wasn't in Baker Street, it was put into "Sherlock Holmes: The Musical". "Baker Street: A Musical Adventure of Sherlock Holmes" is a very different musical.
@mnactr Actually, Leslie Briccusse re-used the song in his musical, SHERLOCK HOLMES, in the late 80's, early 90's, which never made it to Broadway. BAKER STREET was on B'way in 1965.

Just heard this on Radio 2 from the broadcast on the 25th April and love it! I want o sing it on stage, it'd be so much fun! And London is pretty darn wicked!! :-)
I feel the same. I went up there last year to catch the Eurostar, and of about half the people we past on the street, (and I don't want to sound racist or anything) most of them weren't speaking English and/or were from an ethnic minority. I'm pretty a tolerant person, but I felt that the so-called "multicultural society" is just a lot of other cultures replacing Great Britain.
I wish this could be done live. Imagine the costume changes. And how fast she'd be running backstage. Hahha. I also love the combination of different pieces of choreography at the end. That's a big favorite dynamic of mine.
Pet was brilliant and is a most delightful individual to chat with. This number ranks with Vera Lynn and "There Will Always Be an England." An ex took me to see her while in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria Empire Room. An unforgettable evening!
I danced in this film when I was 18!!--glad to say Im still tapping. Also met my best friend in this film and we are still the best of friends 40 years on.
In fact, Maestro John Williams "only" composed the underscore for the movie but he made arrangments and orchestrations for the songs (lyrics and music by Leslie Bricusse).

I fear that anyone visiting the British capital today is more likely to find themselves in Londonistan. So sad.

I love how unrealistic musicals are in films. That would be the entire budget of the musical spent in this one song!
