The first part is about how their parents use to fight alot and the second is about how Jimi (James) and his brother Leon use to play indians in the woods when they were little and the last part is about their mother leaving them. Castles made of sand is a methaphore for how familys can break up so easily.

Directly after Jimi wrote the song he called Leon up and said that he had made a song about their family.
