I'm an Atheist too but common sense only works for the minor stuff that we all agree with (ex: Don't steal). But with Major issues like Capital Punishment, Abortion, etc, its really difficult to make the 'right' choice. I tend to rely mainly on Social Contract Theory & Natural Rights, but even then there's a lot of stuff that is in the Grey neutral area.

Easy question - morality evolved. It is in our genes. It is a survival mechanism. We are a social species. We are not a solitary hunter like a tiger looking out only for himself. What is good for our species and our community is good for us. Of course only some human beings are so highly evolved. Think what you would like, but yes common courtesy is a good way to think. Lets say I am driving and rear end you, but I don't have car insurance. I could flee and stick you with the cost of the damage or I could stop and face the consequences of my actions. Do I think we are *more* moral than religious people? Not necessarily. A vile individual is still that no matter what they believe in.
