I heard the main issue for the triumph v8 going wrong was as it ran at such a high pressure, it could easily blow hoses. Also that the hoses were pretty long and didnt help the situation. I doesnt take a genius in the modern world to fit uprated hoses, put them on properlly and use the proper engine. TVR would shit on any corvette.
Beautiful Stag....only gripe for me is the automatic gearbox, but this Stag was probably an automatic to begin with, so it makes sense to keep as such. Imagine this Stag with an LS2 & a T-56 tranny? Wow!
I wished I'd never made that comment on this video now. All I get in the notifications is somebody on here telling me how wrong I am. But whoever disagrees with my original post is wrong.
My, my. That volvomantam really is an angry little excuse for a man! He certainly doesn't speak for the rest of us Brits. Personally, I love the sound of V8's and American '70's muscle cars are jolly lovely. What! Roll on, you Triumph loving yank, you!!
Truly Awesome Stag and thanks for sharing it. I wonder if Volvomantom would be intersted in the 740 Estate with a twin turbo LS1 installed called "Volvette" as described in the excellent book "how to install an LS engine into almost anything" by Jefferson Bryant. Most Stags when new were bought by wealthy men for their wives so I can't see it as a gentlemans carriage, gorgeous though the shape is. I've owned 2. I'm jealous that I don't have the skills to go that far.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs + injection and tank clean and rustfree
Like what you have done with the stag. Be a very hard car to do anything with other than keep standard aesthetics wise but think you got it just right. I bought my car 20 years ago as a restoration project and didn even consider repairing the triumph lump just replaced it with the rover v8. Don see anything stupid about your conversion at all. Did you replace the original differential? The triumph one is good for going in straight lines but for anything other than that it's pretty lame.
What year "corvette" motor is it because chevy hasn't put anything smaller than a 350ci 5.7l in their corvettes since at least the early 70's I don't think.. A 327 is a 5.3 correct?.. Those usually go in the chevy trucks these days.. So unless it's a crate motor for some old corvette I doubt it's a corvette motor but instead a motor shoehorned in from a Silverado..
great assumption, it is from a 1968 corvette my uncle owned that was totalled. it was involved in a rear end total loss. So, it is a 327 , it originally had the ribbed corvette valve covers with the cursive script all aluminum covers. This is what i say it is, i have been building custom cars for a long time, no need to lie on my part. my body is consumed with half oil and half blood,
@MCHGAB1.. Oh no man I didn't say you were lieing, I dont see alot of poeple going for those old 327 motors these days they all want an LS1 or something unless they're doing an origional restoration. I see alot of people that will pull the 5.3 from a chevy silverado, put a few corvette parts on it, and label it a corvette motor which I now know you didn't do but I wanted to ask anyway sorry and don't pay me any attention I guess haha.
The V8 that originally came in this car was a not a very good engine. So in this case I say great job. But as a rule when you throw a "lump" into a classic you don't really have a car of any value any more. It will go like hell, but it is basically a monster. But I like the monster stag. Do you race it? If so in what class? is it competitive?
sorry that i pulled out the nasty underpowered and poorly constructed ENGLISH design motor with a track record proven American Made chevy corvette 327. The last time i checked you ENGLISH are paying triple for American corvettes to be allowed the experience of real horse power. Unlike your neighbors in italy and germany...There not bad at all...
@MCHGAB1 Speed, speed, fucking speed. It's all about speed and horsepower with you Americans, isn't it? Not everyone gives a fuck about being able to do the quarter mile in less than four seconds. Some people like to waft along at a relaxed pace. The Stag is a gent's car, not for fucking idiots who like shouting 'WOO HOO' and drink terrible beer. Oh, and real horsepower? I'd sooner drive pretty well anything from Italy than have a ZR1. Including the Fiat Uno.
@volvomantom I suggest a new trend, Americans putting British engines into American cars!, you could for example put a, ummm, hang on I'll get back to you...I know!, a Rover V8 into a Stag, what you mean its a Buick engine?, meddling again I see. I have to say though Stag engines are cheap on gas, cause they stop running before you use a tank of gas, hehe!
@bunning63 Yep, us Brits have no record of ever making a decent V8 engine at any point, ever.
Oh..sorry, what? A TVR what? Cerbera? Oh...what's that? That car featured a bespoke V8 made specifically for it...really? Ah, so what. The Brits know nothing about V8s. Stick a 328 in there. We Americans know all there is to know about making V8 engines, and fuck every other country.
@volvomantom Amrican engines fucks English engines boy.....come to edelbrock store u will cry, come to Chevy after market engines....ford's too, u SUCK
@ganee6a What the fuck are you talking about, you stupid bastard? I never said English engines were better than American ones. My original point was that a big, stupid American V8 like this doesn't belong in a gentleman's carriage like the Stag.
@volvomantom often forgotten is that Triumph acknowledges that the Rover 3.5 all alloy motor should have been the original choice over the OHC 3 litre V8. An engine Rover bought from Buick in the late 50's
@volvomantom Then there's that issue about the Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra 289 and 427, Sunbeam Alpine Tiger. This has building up inside for a long time; you know that there are pills available and treatment, right?
@volvomantom Your ignorance is showing! The Stag was made fundamentally for the American market and it was rubbish! Now with some extra technology, quality control and people who do actually give a damn about what they produce the Stag can be made to be reliable fun to drive and a real head turner. So go fit your Volvo with a toothbrush motor and it will be greener than your face!
@volvomantom i'm english , yes mcdonalds and starbucks can get fooked, but this is a private individual doing what he wants to his own car! get off your high horse , this thing is sweeet!. if i had the cash i'd build one if only to piss off the old farts.
Poor bastardized stag. Stags were Grand Tourers, much like the 280 SL Mercedes. I can at least respect what you've done, but it just not my taste. Also, Holy Hell is it loud, you might want to learn sign language, because after a few years of all that noise, you'll probably experience some hearing loss.
Nice job, but that noise would piss me off after the novelty had worn off. Also the rev counter does not work, or is it speedo. Also, what is the ride like on those huge rims, in my experience old car suspension and modern low profile rubber leads to back breaking ride. Again i like the idea though

I must say...this really is brilliant. Beautiful Italian styling combined with the equally beautiful sound of an all American V8...all packaged in the endearingly shoddy British bodywork. :D
Don't get me wrong, the car in this video is a brilliant piece of kit, and I'd have it in a second if I had the paluka, but Triumph Stags simply weren't made for flat-out performance and galavanting about with fancy rims.
They're more suited to Sunday morning drives in the English countryside, with their more modest V8s burbling away at lazy revs along slow, twisty roads.
