@Nicolahairam2 The building was built especially for the ad. It's a copy from the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, France. They couldn't film the famous French hotel like this, so they had to make a replica in a desert.
If you watch the video that shows the making of this great commercial I like that a fake hotel was constructed especially for this ad. These days they would have used just one window and multiplied the image...sometimes new technology isn't always better than the quality & reality of handmade.
This film was realised by Jean Paul Goude in Brazil, the building is a replica from de Cannes' Carlton Hotel, the idea, inspired by Mr Goude's wife was to apply a "south of France attitude" => women talk by the window directly to the street, to a rich (Chanel/cannes/Carlton) class, every woman, even rich, can suffer from love (especially french woman).
Translated to English: Selfish ... Where are you? Show yourself miserable! Beware my wrath! I will be relentless. O rage! O despair! O my love betrayed? Have I lived so long for this infamy? Show yourself selfish! Selfish! Selfish! Selfish!! "
I completely & wholeheartedly agree with this statement!!!!
Unfortunately we are a minority as the general people are now so celebrity-obsessed (and who is a celebrity nowadays?) and I crinch when I think of who "they" see as a role model.
How I miss the days of Loulou de la Falaise, Ines de la Fressange, Marie-Helene de Rothchild, comtesse Jacqueline de Ribe etc. etc.
I remember this! I also remember wetting myself when I saw this. By the way, am I the only one who had a 3rd Reich feeling when I heard "Dance of the Knights" at the background while the girls kept chanting, "Égoïste!! Égoïste!!! Égoïste!!!!"
i was 10 when this first came out and the haunting music and screaming women scared me SHITLESS! but NOBODY does passion, anger and emotion like the french- i dare u to challenge.
@rugbytlse It played in the U.S. I remember the ad clear as day - had me falling out of my seat laughing, but also left me awed at its brilliance. The women's French was unaltered - that added to the mystique. But the man's voiceover must have been in English.
Who can tell me what the name is of the music? I have been searching for it for so long and accidentally found it under this commercial..someone please?
Fantastic ad. Chanel should go back to the dramatic, iconic ads instead of sticking with the new featurette, ridiculous, celebrity filled ones. These old ads really convey the sophistication of Chanel whereas the new ones convey the tacky, celebrity obsessed mindsets of any and every mediocre fashion house. Back to the good old days of cigarettes, courvoisier and black please.
I completely & wholeheartedly agree with this statement!!!!

@bistrosidecar you are soo right, U probably dont remember what U said, it was about the Chanal Egoiste commercials =) I was telling my son, who was not even a thought at this time, as I was 17 when this was made, I had gone to Dillards to buy some makeup and the ladies there, they were soo funny, they had tv's all over the store blareing and repeating the egoiste commercial over and over LOL they were all like "MAKE IT STOP" and "We will hear this in our sleep LOL
@garnitaforvever It wasn't an actual building - I believe that it was built for the purpose of the advert and is a single faced structure. From recollection it was built somewhere in North Africa as a stand alone, hence the absence of other buildings. The costs were astronomical and the girls are wearing Chanel dresses, of course. The budget was that of a small film but is was argued that it was cheaper to build it and knock it down than bring, say Cannes or Monaco to a standstill.
does anyone have a video copy of the English version of this?? we recorded it on 1990 in London with a load of screaming actresses all going mental... I did the voiceover. Would seriously be very happy to find the English clip : )
it should be exactly the same as these on youtube except the male voiceover is 'chanel, for a man' instead of 'pour l'homme'..
if you have this english version I would be grateful to see it up here on youtube..or if you could somehow send it me i seem to remember they kept the original french girls' french text in the end and just dubbed my two little lines over,
Yeah I love the ad too. The piece of music is by Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights. I don't know what the french lyrics are, but Egoiste means selfish.
"Ô rage ! ô désespoir ! N'ai-je donc tant vécu que pour cette infamie ?"
-Le Cid, act I, scene 4, by Pierre Corneille.
Pierre Corneille (1606 1684) was a French tragedian who was one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine.
Great advertisement. One of my favorites by its creativeness in a very simple and true way: Women may call men always selfish and the ad makes it in a very funny way.
i could watch this commercial for the rest of my life ahahahah I love it shahahahah the woman with the red dress is my new heroine, she is so pissed off!!! AHAHAH
