It makes my heart sink when I see this kind of thing happen. I worked for an architecture firm a few years ago and they had to turn a very ornate yet run down church into a homeless shelter and basically gut the place and put in a drop ceiling in the middle of the large main area to save on heating costs. They said they hate doing things like that but they're forced to all the time. We need to save as many of these buildings as we can before America turn into a giant strip mall.
I'm including the once "Michigan theatre" in my dissertation, I would be very grateful if anyone could pass me on some info or past photos of it. .thanks!
As a Detroiter, this hits all too close to home. I love historic buildings mainly because we will NEVER build structures as beautiful as this again. I am sure the train station off Michigan avenue will soon meet a similar fate. How sad indeed.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. Seems like taken right out of an armageddon movie. It is a sad display of our indifference towards the nostalgic and historical. We're losing our souls with every structured that we pillage (sorry, "repurpose") for money.
I'm from Miami and many of our historical structures have been demolished to make way for shiny new condos. Although I welcome progress, I hate that it's at the cost of the architecture that made us glorious in the first place.
I am a contractor that has worked in this building MANY, MANY times in the last 10 years. I have been through every part of this building and there is much more than what you see here.....it is very sad indeed to see such an impressive devastation.
This is such a sad display of what people do for money. What a waste! Detroit has some gems, but this just shows that its people have completely lost faith in what makes the city so wonderful!
well at least its not been wrecking balled like so many gems of our glorious golden age of movie entertainment, they were movie palaces not movie theaters, movie palaces and not something that just the rich were allowed to see but everyone. Like the churches and great governmental buildings of the past
What a theatre! How very, very sad. We seem to have no respect for our irreplaceable architectural history. In America it's better to have a vacant lot than an historical building.
It's a lost indeed, but at the very least some sense of it's former grandeur can be appreciated in the remaining elements, this was an odd way of "simi-demolishing" anything not directly in the way of using the space for parking.
Yes! Great job on the video!! I seen many of great bands there in my youth. I remember just walking around the hall ways and checking out all the decor. A magical place!!
Nice Job!!!! I grew up in Detroit and live in California now and every time I go back to Detroit its sad to see the decay of beautiful buildings like this one.

Saw many concerts back in the mid 70's. Rush and Kiss together, Ted Nugent and battle of the bands with Cactus. BOC. Anyone else?

It may be sad to see such a beautiful building turned into a parking garage, but what choice to they have?
If they couldn't pay the upkeep by using it as a theatre, there was no other use for it.

From the looks of this video, this old theatre is now pretty much an abandoned building where people are allowed to park in. How depressing.

It's kind of bizarre...but otherwise they would have torn it down, and put just another stupid parking lot there.
BTW, the movie 8 Mile featuring Eminem had a scene that was shot in that garage/theatre.
