Japan was the coolest group of the late 70s early 80s and David Sylvian was the coolest guy ( just wished he'd turned up for his concerts :-( )..Nice interview though if a little short ;-)
Can relate to DS, he speaks a lot of sense, clearly has a gentle nature and speaks with honesty. No need to critise his views, they are same views shared by thousands of other people, he is not being self important in any way. He has deep thoughts like the rest of us and this is reflected beautifully into his music. Wish there were more people like him in this difficult world we live in.
@simonangell Perhaps you might want to read the late, great Mick Karn's autobiography; Japan & self existence. It might somewhat alter your opinion as to Saint Dave's gentle & honest nature. Naturally, it's biased but Karn comes across as being as fair minded and honest as you could hope for an autobiographer to be. If I come across as being anti Batt, er sorry, I meant Sylvian, I ought to say that he's written, or perhaps I should say, taken the credit for writing some of my favourite music.
Sylvian is always honest and open about his feelings, showiing sentiment and raw emotion rarely seen on interviews of other celebrities - he's just the opposite of pretentious!!!! I also admire his lack of sarcasm and lack of bitchiness when asked about music/artists that are obviously not his bag. He's naturally gentle. I wish there were more human beings like him in this world
why? is it only because he takes what he does seriously? In this interview he just sounds like someone reflecting on life and on himself, can't see why that should be identified as 'pretentious'.
Fair enough but I still think Sylvian comes across as conceited and full of self importance in this interview. His Japan days produced far more interesting music than his solo efforts...as far as I'm concerned.
At least DS is not playing 'false modesty' here. He is not trying to catch listeners' attention with silly anecdotes. He is serious about his work so he is serious about the questions being asked. He is self-reflective and not 'full of self importance'. Let's not mix these things;-) Btw, DS solo projects are serious art-works. Japan was just good pop-new-romantic stuff.
@zmor68 oh what a lot of pretentious anti-pop rubbish! the japan albums were great too, and japan weren't alone in creating great music in the early 80s, there were lots of other excellent 'new romantic', electropop, new wave or whatever you wanna call it groups in the arly 80s. obviously not your opinion but that's mine
@chrisnoaro1 Oh, what a strange world we are living in! Defend something artistically advanced and you risk being accused of speaking pretentious rubbish! But I did not critise 80s music in general - that would be absurd (take for exempl amazing groups under 4AD label) . Anyway, David's music evolved much since good old Japan times. And stating this simple fact is not being pretentious, is it?
@zmor68 I think the quality of all music/art is purely subjective, from what you said, you would most likely disagree? I genuinely do not regard Japan's music as lower in stature than DS's solo stuff. I regard much of the 'good pop-new romantic stuff ' as serious art, & in fact the occasional DS solo track as drivel, e.g., to my taste, 'In Vogue' is high art while DS's Midnight Sun is weak to say the least. You're right perhaps pretentious was unfair, you just rate DS higher than Japan- I don't.
@futtermeinego Oh that's a shame, hope it helps. I've had gloomy times when his music has been very significant in that way - Maria, Let The Happiness In. Much better now but still love his music. Cheers.
an interview what you really maked falling in love with davids soul. the way he speaks about life in the end.. the things he says.. just give alot of power to go ahead stronger than before and sort of support you to do the best out of your life. i should always watch it when i am having hard times.
thanks for posting. this is truly one of the best interviews ive seen in a while of anyone.
so true... wish there were more artists like this out there nowadays...who are just honest and straight. now its just about pretending to be the most badass and having some chicks shaking their asses in the vids, or about shitty hypes by big gossip-paper-like music mags that 1. let every band fall after maximum 3 months anyway and 2. transformed indie to not being indie but marketing.
its about time we can all put a pricetag on our own excrements.
You are right. That point you mentioned about indie makes sense. In fact, indie is the "mainstream" now. Back in the day, it was all about interesting music. Now it is about just one or two albums worth of material and then all the values that these artists hold onto suddenly disappears (maybe it is difficult to maintain that integrity for a long time). Probably that's the deciding factor as to who will eventually be remembered forever and who is just going to fill in history books.
yes he's great for his calm speech and so articulate but it seems 'a tyrant in the studio' ..a difficult guy Id say ........been to many of his concerts and apart from the '88 concert Id say his aloofness is difficult for an audience, the music and singing always great but seems so barely tolerate people even being there..ah well ........he s still great
Now i no why there called DS systems :D

LOL "None of us were natural musicians except Steve!! Mick Karn's autobiography becomes even more real following that comment.

spelling pretentious wrong = ultimate fail

The fat that you bothered to write that I made a mistake in the spelling of pretentious shows that you have far too much time on your hands...

*fact
I was pointing out the irony more than the spelling mistake.

Actually I'd have to agree with you there; all of the best Sylvian songs were probably between Quiet Life and Tin Drum =]

Okay David, you think that your music after Japan is more important to you and maybe better but
neithertheless, as a big fan of Japan, I can tell you
that I SO miss that band and its music that was really- really brilliant . I have to say that, when you splitted up, I was totally inconsolable!
