@penelopoop May your ignorance be forgiven, people like you are a disgrace to the technological world, ITS NOT JUST EFFECTS!! It can do everything that Windows can. And Yes you CAN PLAY WARCRAFT with it (although the setup is a bit complicated)

You can run a search on Ubuntu forums (there are pre-packaged debs as well as guides on how to compile from source if you prefer it that way). Note that the physics engine (akamaru) has long since been discontinued (and you'd have to run older builds of Kiba-dock to use it) and Kiba-Dock development as a whole has been halted for quite a while now. Currently Cairo-Dock is probably the most functional for Linux
Well the performance of "eye candy" alongside other applications given the system specifications can be used as a measure of overall system performance. Also, it's rather hard to display stability in a video XD.

Well, Linux is an OS, like Windows, Ubuntu is a distribution (probably the best for "switchers") of the Linux OS and Beryl (now Compiz) is responsible for the Desktop effects (like the Cube, the wobbly windows, the snow and many others). Kiba Dock is an emulation of the Mac OS bar at the bottom of the screen. Kinda like the Windows Start Menu.
Kiba-Dock is a docking program. At the time of this video it had a functional physics engine which has thus been removed (with other functionality added in its place). Kiba-Dock is more comparable to rocket dock than the bottom panel in traditional Windows releases.
"Kiba-Dock is more comparable to rocket dock than the bottom panel in traditional Windows releases."
Indeed, that's why I said that it's "an emulation of the Mac OS bar" (or rather the Dock). The fuction is quite comparable to the Windows start menu and taskbar though.
"If you have an nvidia card then this is not going to work."
What are you talking about? Nvidia cards tend to work far better than the ATI counterparts (I'm assuming non-integrated cards) in terms of ease of setting up. My video which was posted here used an Nvidia 6800. All you need to do is enable the propriety restricted drivers.
i also have ubuntu but am getting problems, do you know what might be the problem? my internet doesnt work on ubuntu and when I try to update or install a program it shows a error message............... "fetch" something
blyzeing, this is a really old version of ubuntu, it might work on the latest (8.10) with some tweaks. By the way, since when have you had ubuntu? you have only played on mine.
in terms of visual dispaly ubuntu has the best, but since its complicated for me i have windows cus its so esy to use, but if i knew how to use ubuntu id use that
Games can run just fine on Linux and Mac (actually they usually run better then on windows). The problem is that since Windows has the monopoly most games are made exclusively for it. So if you want to play those games on a Mac or Linux system you usually need an emulator and thus the game will slow down. I am not much of a gamer these days but if I compare Doom 3 on Ubuntu to Vista (same machine), the Ubuntu always gets better frame rates since the system uses less resources.
Many game developers create games using Direct X instead of OpenGL thus making it difficult to port even if they wanted to (and often they don't due to far lower market shares outside of Windows). That said, a large portion of games can still run fine in WINE.
You can play certain game on Linux. but, if you talking about games like Call of Duty, not really. For right now you will still need Windows to play high end games.
there are to many bug to play recent game in Winehq. I guarantee the game you mention are not in gold status. I will not pay 50 dollars for a game to play in wine.
you right! but gold requires configuration. for a new user for Linux that might not seem desirable. they may want to Cedega or CrossOver games ( by codeweaver).
Yeah if you're a hardcore gamer, then you should stick with Windows. But for people like me who only occasionally play games and enjoy tweaking things to improve performance, Linux is fine.
I've played around a bit with beryl and compiz, but for all practical purposes, the wobbly window and rotating cube don't add much, and the default metacity window manager gets the job done with less bugs.
This video being 2 years old at this point still shows that windows is very slow and needs to be put down. Windows can not compete with the graphic capabilities of OpenGL, which just happens to be the primary graphics processor of Mac's as well.
With Windows, I can download just about any program and not worry about whether or not it is Windows compatible, and I don't have to do any type of tricks to get it to install onto my system. To me, that is much more important than pretty graphics.
With Mac OSX, I can run my main OS without worrying about viruses, malware...etc. and with VMWare I run Windows XP and Linux. So I have access to more programs then you. :P
Absolutely true, but besides the point, my point was the advantage of Windows vs. Linux. Besides, I have absolutely no reason to use Mac OSX, therefore, I have no reason to own a Mac. And, even if I owned a Mac, I would HAVE to get Windows, because my school programs require Windows, but oh... the moment you put Windows on a Mac, you're susceptible to viruses, so there goes that whole argument.
You have no reason to use Mac OSX? It has some great apps, you should get out more. :D
I don't get viruses on my Windows install because I use the OS that is secure to browse, email... do net stuff. I use Windows to run specific apps. You don't get viruses just from running Windows.
It's because I DO get out that I don't know what these "great" apps are. My life doesn't revolve around my computer. And again, there are apps on Windows that I MUST use that are Windows only; so even if I got a Mac, I would have to get Windows. And there is nothing on a Mac that I must run. No reason to use OSX = no reason to own a Mac. Why should I pay for a Mac when a PC that is way cheaper will do everything I need? I'd rather spend the difference with things associated with having a life.
Again, I don't care, Windows has everything I need. If you have OSX and you still feel the need to run Windows and Linux, then that just tells me that OSX must be really lacking.
With Linux I can download pretty much any program I need and I can find them rather easily. I don't have to worry about malware jeopardizing system stability, reducing system performance, or retrieving sensitive data. When I wish to run a Windows-specific program, I use WINE. The fact that I never have to empty out my wallet whenever I need a program is a great side effect. CF provides much functionality that Windows doesn't offer; it being aesthetically pleasing is the cherry on top.
I don't have to empty out my wallet for a program either, becuase anything that Linux runs, Windows will run too. I don't have to pay for MS Office if I don't feel like it, I can run Open Office, but on Linux, you can't run MS Office without jumping through hoops. It being aethetically pleasing is true, but that's not that big of a deal to me.
GNOME-Baker, Amarok, K3B, Compiz Fusion (Beryl's successor), Kaffeine, GNOME Office, and Cinelerra are examples of software Windows will not run.
"you can't run MS Office..."
I don't consider right clicking a file and selecting "Open with WINE" to be jumping through the hoops. However, Open Office and GNOME Office remain present and can run without WINE's assistance.
I use CF for added functionality. Aesthetics are merely a side-effect.
"GNOME-Baker, Amarok, K3B, Compiz Fusion (Beryl's successor), Kaffeine, GNOME Office, and Cinelerra are examples of software Windows will not run."
Good point.
"I don't consider right clicking a file and selecting "Open with WINE" to be jumping through the hoops"
I've seen forums here on YT of people complaining that they can't get certain Windows apps to work and have been asking for help. But let me ask you this: can I run ANY Windows app with WINE?
Wine Is Not an Emulator. Because it is a compatibility layer, it will not run all programs though those that it will can be run with decent performance. An option for people with decent hardware is emulation of Windows with the usage of Virtual Machines which will provide 100% compatibility in nearly all cases.
For most programs, alternatives exist. What exactly would you need to keep?
Well, one program in particular just as an example, is Mathcad. I use that program for my physical chemistry class and it's what we lecture off of, so using another program similar like Maple or Mathematica isn't an option because that's like telling me to use another textbook, not the one that the class uses. But if I'd only get "decent" performance with WINE, then why would I want to use that instead of just using Windows?
MathCAD seems to vary on version being run. Version 14 (the most recent I believe) recieved a "bronze" and a "silver" on the most recent tests with WINE (June/July of '08). MathCAD 2000 recieved 2 "gold" ratings.
If you will ONLY run programs that are not available for Linux, there is very little reason to run Linux. I dual boot for instances where I need Windows-specific software. Price, security, performance, and configurability are the primary selling points for me.
Well I guess everyone has their different reasons for what they want. But for me, the primary selling point is functionality. I want to be able to use the programs I need without having to worry whether or not I can get it to work out. I guess if you're pretty good with Linux then it would be awesome. I just don't see any incentive for me to really get into it.
Yes, for software functionality, Windows is king (primary reason I dual boot with it) and will likely remain that for a good deal of time. For almost all else though, I prefer Linux. To each their own.
Well, I should explain what I was saying. You CAN get them to work great, *I* find it more difficult as you have to use the restricted drivers, and they (the drivers) have never worked that well for me when using ATI cards. But you could try using "EnvyNG" as it tends to sort out the problems for some people.
The thing that amazes me the most, is that this video is only 1½ year old and still, that version of Ubuntu seems pre-historic. Tells you a bit about just how fast Linux, Compiz and so forth is being developed...
The feature was removed from Compiz Fusion (At the time it was Ctrl + Alt + Up/Down Arrow; the latter of the two was changed and the prior was removed). Now one can manually use the mouse to view the top desktop.
Does KibaDock show open windows aswell. Like the dock on Mac

@penelopoop yes you can play warcraft on it and its not as hard to do as kkkdwww made it seem
you have basically 2 options free or buy, hard or easy respectively
free and hard is a program called wine (not to hard just run the exe to install warcraft and then play with wineconfig settings till it works)
buy and easy is crossover games it is $25 and just run and install
the only downside to these is any windows programs you install will require higher system specs than recommended on the box

No you don't. Just repartition your drive. I don't think I have ever had Ubuntu alone on a drive for more than one day for some weird reason o.O. I typically use Windows as a storage drive as I can read NTFS from within Linux.
LordDestros 3 years ago
Im ready to convert to linux soon its looking real good and all for free. Screw MS and their 300dollar price tags.
Soon as everyone starts moving over all developers will have to accommodate linux os.

would somone please tell me what is ubuntu linux beryl and all the other stuff is.......
i apreaciate it
SHAIKG 3 years ago
Well, Linux is an OS, like Windows, Ubuntu is a distribution (probably the best for "switchers") of the Linux OS and Beryl (now Compiz) is responsible for the Desktop effects (like the Cube, the wobbly windows, the snow and many others). Kiba Dock is an emulation of the Mac OS bar at the bottom of the screen. Kinda like the Windows Start Menu.
macbuntu09 3 years ago
Kiba-Dock is a docking program. At the time of this video it had a functional physics engine which has thus been removed (with other functionality added in its place). Kiba-Dock is more comparable to rocket dock than the bottom panel in traditional Windows releases.
LordDestros 3 years ago
"Kiba-Dock is more comparable to rocket dock than the bottom panel in traditional Windows releases."
Indeed, that's why I said that it's "an emulation of the Mac OS bar" (or rather the Dock). The fuction is quite comparable to the Windows start menu and taskbar though.

If you have an nvidia card then this is not going to work.

"If you have an nvidia card then this is not going to work."
What are you talking about? Nvidia cards tend to work far better than the ATI counterparts (I'm assuming non-integrated cards) in terms of ease of setting up. My video which was posted here used an Nvidia 6800. All you need to do is enable the propriety restricted drivers.

how come games cant run very well in mac and linux if windows can do it why cant they??
WhiteW0lf92 3 years ago
@WhiteW0lf92
Games can run just fine on Linux and Mac (actually they usually run better then on windows). The problem is that since Windows has the monopoly most games are made exclusively for it. So if you want to play those games on a Mac or Linux system you usually need an emulator and thus the game will slow down. I am not much of a gamer these days but if I compare Doom 3 on Ubuntu to Vista (same machine), the Ubuntu always gets better frame rates since the system uses less resources.
jonothewright 3 years ago
Many game developers create games using Direct X instead of OpenGL thus making it difficult to port even if they wanted to (and often they don't due to far lower market shares outside of Windows). That said, a large portion of games can still run fine in WINE.
LordDestros 3 years ago
Crysis even runs (laggy)
Wine is better than you think
Steven707 3 years ago
YOU CAN PLAY GAMES ON IT.?
GlamRockNR0LL 3 years ago
You can play certain game on Linux. but, if you talking about games like Call of Duty, not really. For right now you will still need Windows to play high end games.
ipponsuki 3 years ago
Call of duty 1-4 run in Wine
Steven707 3 years ago
there are to many bug to play recent game in Winehq. I guarantee the game you mention are not in gold status. I will not pay 50 dollars for a game to play in wine.
ipponsuki 3 years ago
Actually, Call of duty 1 and 2 are platinum.
Call of Duty 4 is Gold. Go look for yourself.
Watch my video of Call of Duty 4 in Wine, it runs fine
Steven707 3 years ago
you right! but gold requires configuration. for a new user for Linux that might not seem desirable. they may want to Cedega or CrossOver games ( by codeweaver).
ipponsuki 3 years ago
Yeah if you're a hardcore gamer, then you should stick with Windows. But for people like me who only occasionally play games and enjoy tweaking things to improve performance, Linux is fine.
Steven707 3 years ago
but to be honest with you . I believe Linux will eventual be the dominating gaming O.S. once Microsoft monopoly ends.

r3pusaya1p 3 years ago
I've played around a bit with beryl and compiz, but for all practical purposes, the wobbly window and rotating cube don't add much, and the default metacity window manager gets the job done with less bugs.

ScionT2B 3 years ago
This video being 2 years old at this point still shows that windows is very slow and needs to be put down. Windows can not compete with the graphic capabilities of OpenGL, which just happens to be the primary graphics processor of Mac's as well.
bentheexo 3 years ago 3
With Windows, I can download just about any program and not worry about whether or not it is Windows compatible, and I don't have to do any type of tricks to get it to install onto my system. To me, that is much more important than pretty graphics.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
With Mac OSX, I can run my main OS without worrying about viruses, malware...etc. and with VMWare I run Windows XP and Linux. So I have access to more programs then you. :P
dropbot 3 years ago
Absolutely true, but besides the point, my point was the advantage of Windows vs. Linux. Besides, I have absolutely no reason to use Mac OSX, therefore, I have no reason to own a Mac. And, even if I owned a Mac, I would HAVE to get Windows, because my school programs require Windows, but oh... the moment you put Windows on a Mac, you're susceptible to viruses, so there goes that whole argument.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
You have no reason to use Mac OSX? It has some great apps, you should get out more. :D
I don't get viruses on my Windows install because I use the OS that is secure to browse, email... do net stuff. I use Windows to run specific apps. You don't get viruses just from running Windows.
dropbot 3 years ago
It's because I DO get out that I don't know what these "great" apps are. My life doesn't revolve around my computer. And again, there are apps on Windows that I MUST use that are Windows only; so even if I got a Mac, I would have to get Windows. And there is nothing on a Mac that I must run. No reason to use OSX = no reason to own a Mac. Why should I pay for a Mac when a PC that is way cheaper will do everything I need? I'd rather spend the difference with things associated with having a life.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
"I don't know what these "Great" apps are." - well, that sentence there just shows how clueless you are. Nice chatting with you.
dropbot 3 years ago
Again, I don't care, Windows has everything I need. If you have OSX and you still feel the need to run Windows and Linux, then that just tells me that OSX must be really lacking.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
With Linux I can download pretty much any program I need and I can find them rather easily. I don't have to worry about malware jeopardizing system stability, reducing system performance, or retrieving sensitive data. When I wish to run a Windows-specific program, I use WINE. The fact that I never have to empty out my wallet whenever I need a program is a great side effect. CF provides much functionality that Windows doesn't offer; it being aesthetically pleasing is the cherry on top.
LordDestros 3 years ago
I don't have to empty out my wallet for a program either, becuase anything that Linux runs, Windows will run too. I don't have to pay for MS Office if I don't feel like it, I can run Open Office, but on Linux, you can't run MS Office without jumping through hoops. It being aethetically pleasing is true, but that's not that big of a deal to me.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
"anything that Linux runs, Windows will run too"
GNOME-Baker, Amarok, K3B, Compiz Fusion (Beryl's successor), Kaffeine, GNOME Office, and Cinelerra are examples of software Windows will not run.
LordDestros 3 years ago
"GNOME-Baker, Amarok, K3B, Compiz Fusion (Beryl's successor), Kaffeine, GNOME Office, and Cinelerra are examples of software Windows will not run."
Good point.
"I don't consider right clicking a file and selecting "Open with WINE" to be jumping through the hoops"
I've seen forums here on YT of people complaining that they can't get certain Windows apps to work and have been asking for help. But let me ask you this: can I run ANY Windows app with WINE?
jtlbb2 3 years ago
"I've seen forums here on YT..."
LordDestros 3 years ago
Well, one program in particular just as an example, is Mathcad. I use that program for my physical chemistry class and it's what we lecture off of, so using another program similar like Maple or Mathematica isn't an option because that's like telling me to use another textbook, not the one that the class uses. But if I'd only get "decent" performance with WINE, then why would I want to use that instead of just using Windows?
jtlbb2 3 years ago
MathCAD seems to vary on version being run. Version 14 (the most recent I believe) recieved a "bronze" and a "silver" on the most recent tests with WINE (June/July of '08). MathCAD 2000 recieved 2 "gold" ratings.
If you will ONLY run programs that are not available for Linux, there is very little reason to run Linux. I dual boot for instances where I need Windows-specific software. Price, security, performance, and configurability are the primary selling points for me.
LordDestros 3 years ago
Well I guess everyone has their different reasons for what they want. But for me, the primary selling point is functionality. I want to be able to use the programs I need without having to worry whether or not I can get it to work out. I guess if you're pretty good with Linux then it would be awesome. I just don't see any incentive for me to really get into it.
jtlbb2 3 years ago
Yes, for software functionality, Windows is king (primary reason I dual boot with it) and will likely remain that for a good deal of time. For almost all else though, I prefer Linux. To each their own.

It can be run under wine with no problems using an nVidia card. ATI cards don't work as well under linux.

Sad Face.
bilbomarks 3 years ago
Well, I should explain what I was saying. You CAN get them to work great, *I* find it more difficult as you have to use the restricted drivers, and they (the drivers) have never worked that well for me when using ATI cards. But you could try using "EnvyNG" as it tends to sort out the problems for some people.
slinkey1981 3 years ago
On the latest version of ubuntu (8.10) there is an option to install ATI drivers if you have an internet conection
