If the Italians and Germans had had their General staffs jointly plan a Mediteranean strategy beginning with Malta---while the British were busy fighting the battle of Britain---[Spitfires and Hurricanes were rushed to Malta immediately after the B of B] it would have been no conquest. Instead Mussolini tried to impress the Germans [and the Japanese] with a big show in Egypt instead of starting small as the Germans had in Poland.

I was standing right near that balcony in that building. Mussolini would have gazed over those immense crowds and seen that colossal monument to Victor Emanuele just to the right. One can understand the perpetuation of nationalism there. When you're constantly reminded of the ancient super power Italy was, you would have a great incentive to restore its presence.

@fredericfranc I read that he told Hitler that if a war was to start, Italy needed at least three years to prepare, Hitler ignored him and invaded poland. Because of his alliance with Hitler he had to join the fight even though he wasn't ready, its sad.
