  • "I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old" . . . . does anyone else find that an exceedingly creepy thing to say? I mean, just before you plant a big romantic kiss on someone, isn't that just the weirdest, creepiest thing to say to them? ~Shutter~

  • God, Knightly gets more tail in Emma's imagination then he actually does in real life.

  • somehow this scene makes their relationship seem really gross... "i held you in my arms when you were three weeks old" seriously? this is the moment you want to bring that up?

  • I'm sorry guys but I don't like this dude at all :(

Not the way he is too harsh nor his looks nor anything...

He's not at all the Knightley I always imagined while reading the books!

The closest one to THAT aspect is to me Miller... Sensitive still harsh sometimes, loving... This Knightley seems too forward, too angry, I don't know...

  • its the truest version of emma so far and holding emma when she was 3 weeks old is in the book

  • "His aunt is in the way! His aunt dies!" wow.

  • to me the best version of emma, mark strong is the best knightley ever, exactly as described in the book. and kate beckinsale is a perfect emma, cheeky, a bit full of herself at first, but also warmhearted and full of goodness... great acting, too!

  • To me Emma is the best Kate possible.

As for Mr Knightley, I've always imagined him as Robert Downey Jr, he would be amazing!

  • Northam than Miller for me (every time I watch him say, "Try not to kill my dogs." my lady parts feel all provoked!). I feel Gwyneth was the perfect Emma she brought a sophistication to the role that I felt was missing in Romala's may a bit to much, but Romala's was the complete opposite. I liked Romala though. Meh, to Kate. , however romala made her youthful and bright which and Strong. Fabulous acting, but I just don't seem Kate as Emma.

  • this mr. Knightley acts less good when you compare him to the mr. Knightley in Emma 2009 in my opinion!

  • Emma's hat looks like the Mad Hatter's hat from Alice in Wonderland :)

  • I don't think Miller stays true to the character of Mr Knightley; he probably is more loveable or sensitive to appeal to our modern audience...not the audience in Austen's era.

Also, the comment about holding Emma at 3 weeks old was mentioned in the book. Her and him have a giant age difference and it does seem a bit sick at first but again it's just another difference in the era. Just like how Juliet was only 13 when she met Romeo.

  • @iHeartAniime He could have been 2 or 3 years old and held her in his arms. Even 10 years would not be too weird.

  • I must say, I didn't think it would turn out this way!!

  • Oh, so she admits the truth, it is no wonder she didn't want her friend to marry him.

  • The misery she has inflicted upon others shall be afflicted upon herself.

  • i like this "Emma"-version the most! Kate Beckinsale is very beautiful and a great Emma! funny and, at the beginning, always full of herself! xDD Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley is strictly but warm-hearted! ^^ a perfect mix!

  • oooooh Mark Strong is a sexy beast.

  • i love this Mr.Knightley, he is so passionate .. lol love it.

  • it was totally perfect and romantic until he said "i held you when you were three weeks old". lol, i know the age difference was bigger back then but that just completely threw me off and took me out of the moment

  • ummmm, somehow i find mark strong more attractive when he's like 15 years older. maybe its the haircut....

  • Actually, Mr. Knightley needs to be stern. Emma's so strong willed that she runs over everybody. With her mom dead and her father senile, she has grown up as a spoiled brat with only Mr. K strong enough to make her behave herself and grow up into the delightful woman she's capable of being. The challenge is for him to manage the change from parental figure to lover, so you see him struggling with that right until the very end.

  • his aunt is in the way, his aunt dies! I love the way this guys gives his speeches. Its wonderful.

  • 4:55

  • "You must of had a wet ride."

    "Yes."

Oh lord, I can't be the only one who's mind dove into the gutter. Lol!

  • no way the mr knightley who played in the emma with gweneth paltrow was by far the best but jonny lee mill did really good. i think his name was jeremy notham. hottie for sure and very good acting

  • we need more romanticism like this in our movies today

  • @Olegstuff21986 You said it. One of the reasons I love Jane Austen's work is because she told romantic stories without them being trashy, like a lot of movies are today. Have you seen the movie 'Young Victoria'? It is not a Jane Austen film of course but I am pretty sure it takes place in this time period or close after. It is about the young Queen Victoria before she got all depressed and started to wear black all the time. It is very romance and non trashy.

  • @Nala162024 She wore black to MOURN HER HUSBAND.

  • So which character is better? Mr. Knightley or Mr. Darcy?

  • @Killerkiki313 Mr. Darcy.

  • you know whats funny? When he said "I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old", I never found that to be creepy at all. I had though that it was kind of adorable. i also think that since atthe time big age differences in marrige were not unusual, maybe thats another reason i found it to not be creepy. ...please don't yell at me, ccommentors.

  • @FluffyPuff16 I'm totally agree with you! There is tender, not creepy at all!!!!!!

  • This is far the worst adaptation of Emma of all three I've seen so far. The only good actor in this is Mark Strong, and yet I don't like his Mr. Knightley. Everyone else is simply awful. My favourite adaptation is the latest one with Romola Garai and J. L. Miller, though I like the one with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam as well. But this one - no.

  • @Sammyjackally haha. watch the '72 version. You'll probably change your mind about the worst version then.

  • my goodness this version totally is so weird! I mean they could have picked a more handsomer actor to play Mr. Knightley, like maybe Richard Armitage or something. The ending the Mr. Knightley says something like "I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old!" I dont know why but that felt creepy.

  • @a2nieva Oh my.. what an amazing choice you made. Richard Armitrage is so handsome... I can't even begin to explain.. *day dreams*

  • @iraqilynn Omg! I know what you mean, I didn't even know who he was until North and South. I am so glad though that i watched that movie. Anyway, I mean you got to admit that actor here was really ugly.

  • @flipsyde336 LOL haha yea.. the one here is no so pretty :P

  • @iraqilynn yah c how uncomfortable she looks. She looks like her Granpa just propose to her? Awkward?! You know who else would be a great Mr. Knightly robert penry-jones from persuasion or James murray from Under the green wood tree. Gosh i am so pathetic but they r so hot arent they?

  • @flipsyde336 Holy Crap I know all of them!! hahaha you must be a period drama fanatic like myself! Shushhh if you're pahetic that means I am! hahahaha They are EXTREMELY HOT!

  • @iraqilynn girl you do not even know the half of it. I must have watched Rupert penry jones like a dozen times now since I found out what else elizabeth haskell wrote, and we should not forget the gorgeous JJ Field of Northhanger Abbey lol.OMG!! I officially need a life!lol.

  • @flipsyde336 OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha I know EXACTLY how you feel... we both need a life, but the problem is it can never be like the stories we read and see :'( lol

  • @iraqilynn but we have our imagination my dear! but come on girl can you imagine us locked in a corset every day and better yet be as fragile as the women back then. Your not allowed to own property, vote or anything besides have kids. i know that would drive me nuts!

  • @flipsyde336 lol You're right, there is always a bad side to everything and as a feminist I can not accept these downfalls. We will only let our minds linger on the good stuff like handome, chivalrous men like Mr. Darcy and Thornton and all the others... ahhhh heaven.

  • I have to agree with most of you that JLM was the best Knightley.Mark Strong is a tremendous actor but I found him too bossy, dictatorial and very unromantic. Totally agree with Darya248 - no chemistry at all between these two.JLM brought a charming vulnerability to the part, along with humour & gentleness & had great chemistry with Romola. This adaptation is prob closest to book though admittedly.Only criticism of 09 is didn't show enough of Emmas fear of losing him.

  • Haha, Emma mostly just looks puzzled in the proposal scene.

Ewww, awkward, awkward, awkward. I like the text they use for the proposal in this version but the whole scene does NOT fit with how either of them have behaved to each other through the whole movie.

  • I've seen this particular part like 5 times already, trying to find out why I loved it and was unsatisfied at the same time. It is still my favorite confession, and Mark's acting is just PERFECT, but Kate's acting is what's bothering me! She does not show the warmth and love that Mark's eyes show and her movements and speech is just all very jerkily. I wish there was another Emma, that's all. But I'd still watch the whole thing just for Mark's Mr. Knightley. :)

  • his nose is massssive

  • I love this Mr. Knightley. He brings the protectiveness and endearment and warm that only Mr. Knightley has. <3

  • Ya, I also think Jonny Lee Miller is the best Mr. Knightley so far.

  • The video is here that Jane Austen's Emma 11/12 part has a problem, it hangs at 1:40 can you please see that I wanted to see this video. Help me.

  • I like Mark Strong's Mr Knightley but that kiss was so awkward! And just in general the dialogue between them felt really...strained I guess, even when they realised they both loved each other. So far prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow version engagement scene.

  • Austen's characters go through a self-realization journey throughout her stories. You actually see them "grow up". That is what happens to Emma in the book as well. She realizes how foolish her perception of life, social relations, and more importantly love has been, she goes through a self-journey, and it is then that she discovers her love for Knightly (she sort of becomes worthy of love, and to love). IMO, the biggest shortcoming of this adaptation is the failure to show her transformation.

  • Even though this version is truer to the book, I have to say I like the 2009 version with Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller the best. That version captures the spirit of the story much better: Emma is cheerful and lighthearted, and though she makes a lot of mistakes, she means well. Mr. Knightly has a sense of humor and you actually see him fall in love with Emma.

As much as I admire Mark Strong, I think the chemistry between Emma and Mr. Knightly is missing in here.

  • Oh dear... Kate Beckinsale does a good job, and Mark Strong's Knightley is fine too - very intense if a bit too angry - but their feeling just aren't developed well enough here. Oh LOOK, someone else wants him, *flashback flashback* and all of a sudden she realizes, ooh i LOVE him! it just doesn't work. There are good things about all the versions (well, ok, romola garai really annoys me) but none of them have it spot on yet... maybe next time...

  • Indeed, I love all the Mr Knightleys in all the adaptations very much. Personally, I think Mark Strong's voice and countenance, as well as his obvious age disparity with Kate Beckinsale makes for the most realistic Mr Knightley among them all. The way he speaks, his posture, his conduct and all that is very true to the book. I also like Kate Beckinsale's youthful looks, her mischievous expression and whatnot. I only wish the movie wasn't so short and developed the story more.

  • Agreed that the lines are delivered much more naturally in this version that in the 2009...but this rendition certainly lacks the spark of the 2009.

As for comparing Mr Knightleys, Mark Strong acts much more like an English gentleman than JLM, although JLM has more passion. A bit too much sometimes (like when he scolds Emma for teasing Miss Bates).

  • This is my favourite out of all the adaptations that have ever been done of this movie.

  • for me these 2 portrait them best :)

  • Kiss badly done!!!lol Nothing is believable here in my opinion. Why does Knightley love Emma? Why does Emma love Knightley? Just because they´ve known each other since forever and just because someone else fancies him? Well, okay...lol

What chemistry??? Just goes to show that tastes differ, I guess. I just don´t like it when Mr. Knightley is played as such a stern father figure - gives me the creeps! Who wants someone who always only frowns at you?? Not so in the book thank goodness!

  • I love this adaptation of Emma, Kate Beckinsale is the best Emma, I love her.

  • Honestly this version is much better than the 2009 or even the Gwyneth Paltrow one... there is much more passion and intensity in this Mr Knightley's voice, and the chemistry between the two actors is almost perfect! Also the way these famous Austen lines are delivered is more realistic, and the actors' movements and gestures really add to them...

  • I like all the Mr. Knightley's for different reasons. and i definitely can understand why Emma would love this one. but i think Jonny lee Miller did by far the best. Northam brought lots of warmth to Knightley, while Strong was a very upright, noble Knightley. i think Miller did very well of combining the two. he was sensitive, while still remaining strong, and good.

  • @chanman67chevy Oh, so true!!! Jonny is my favorite Knightley and I didn't understand why. Now that you analyed the three knightleys, I get it! So true!

  • I love this scene <3 I watch it without any interruption since yesterday!!! <3

"You know you hear nothing but truth from me"

... "I do. I do return them. I do love you"

I think too that each actor who played Knightley brought something to the character =) I admit I love JLM in the role, he has got something I'm fond of with. Unless it looks like the younger of the three ^^ . But I like very much the two others... Each of them brought something new and not necessarily bad ♥

  • @chanman67chevy Johnny Lee Miller is my favorite, as well.

  • @chanman67chevy Really? I foung Miller to be a very bad actor, and not respecting at all the character Austen created

  • I disagree. JLM's Mr Knightley was foppish and completely unlike Jane Austen's written version. This is THE best Emma adaptation yet made.

  • Like this Emma but prefer Jonny Lee Miller for Mr. Knightley. The comment about holding Emma at 3 weeks old is sick. That was not in the book. This Mr. Knightley is very stern and there is no real reason in this film for Emma to love him.

  • @marshsundeen hm, but still, Mr. Knightley, in my opinion, was a bit stern, he was sort of conservative, I guess that was the whole point, he was strict, but he was always right

  • @marshsundeen

no, but there is a comment in the book about him being in love with her since shes was thirteen. I think the reason I like this adaption best is because it seems to me to be the most realistic and true to the book and that time.

The other Emma adaptions just ignore the age difference so we're comfortable with it in modern times, but in the book there is a big age difference.

  • @marshsundeen Just how i feel i can not stand Mark Strong as Mr, Knightley

  • @marshsundeen In the books he told her he'd been in love with her since she was 13, which was just as sick if you ask me. So they kept the creep factor.

  • @yanichkastoyanova I never read the book YET but gezz that is sick that is just the beganing of her teenage years! What would her father say?

  • @marshsundeen I know it was weird that this Mr. Knightly said that but it was probably true, as distrubing as it sounds.lol.

  • @marshsundeen I think it was in the book actually, if I'm not mistaken. Mr. Knightley is supposed to have known Emma since she was a baby, being about 18 years her senior.

  • @marshsundeen But he did say that he first fell in love with her when she was 13, which is still pretty creepy.

  • @abeautifulnightsky I know it does sound creepy; BUT it is true!! It was in the book; he tells her that in the book.
