I'm not a native speaker but I can say that "I were" and "I was" are both correct " If I,she,he were" is used only for things that is impossible to happen .like "If I were you, If she were there, ...". And we can use "I was.." for facts Like "I was there."
Thanks Alex for this clear lesson, when I was talking over my pass always I noticed that after some minutes the conversations usually turned boring, but now I fill that I have more resources to express me in a better way with more options thanks to you.
@lukersweb -- As a native English speaker, I can assure you that "If I were" is correct ; however, many people (even native English speakers) incorrectly say "If I was".
Well the reason for that is, to express past real positions (reality), we use the helping verb 'was', but to express imaginary positions we use 'were' instead of 'was'
E.g., I was a teacher means that my past position was that of teacher and "if I were" means I supposed myself to be in that position.
I curious why the title of this video is '"Would' in the past' while it talks about would and used to even used to more than would. However, I do really like all your video, thumbs up for you. I always wish the best of luck.

Why did you use "If I were" and you didn't use "If I was" ? That's something I didn't understand...
lukersweb 10 months ago 6
@lukersweb Now I know... thanks !
lukersweb 10 months ago
@lukersweb when you talk about something that is not real, you use were for first person.
persistente1 8 months ago
@lukersweb When you're talking about the past you need to use were for all persons, if you say "If I was" is incorrect.

@lukersweb In the first sentence is about a condition that have to be met. - IF
In the second is about a circumstance under which the action is done. - WHEN

@KevinByrne2 Exactly, but you only use "was" in informal everyday english.

@lukersweb In conditional statements you have to use "were" for all the pronouns."If she were prittier, I would ask her to prom."

@lukersweb Very nice observation I would say.
Well the reason for that is, to express past real positions (reality), we use the helping verb 'was', but to express imaginary positions we use 'were' instead of 'was'
E.g., I was a teacher means that my past position was that of teacher and "if I were" means I supposed myself to be in that position.
I hope that makes everything clear to you :)

@lukersweb why did YOU use why instead of WY or anything ?
That's language and the way it is. Think about your own language and you got what I say for sure .
