and hotels that don't have a card like this to check if you're inside or not usally require you to leave your room key behind when you leave, this is not so you don't steal or copy the key as some may think, but this is also for the same reason, to make evacuation procedures more efficient.

i STRONGLY discourage the use of this 'hack'. here's why: in hotels they always have some kind of way to 'check' if people are actually inside their rooms or not, this is by LAW, so why is that you might ask? simple. if any calamity happens in the hotel, they need to be able to evacuate the entire building as quickly and efficiently as possible. and if they don't know which rooms have people in them, it will take that much longer to evacuate. so this hack is potentialy dangerous and illegal.

Some hotel room switches only work with the key...there's a sensor to ensure that nothing else works.

@Margen672 It doesn't, but having the air-conditioning running all day in a hot environment so that you don't have to suffer the slight discomfort of the room cooling down when you get back to it is. If you want a fridge check to see if they have one n the room when you book, if they don't find one that does, a air conditioner running 24/7 is not the answer.

Interesting, they are putting the energy switches in so that they use less power which is better for the environment. Fortunately for those of us that are somewhat less selfish than you they have now come out with switches that read the key cards so cannot be overridden by the childish and selfish. If you want to stay cold go on holiday to a cold country, or better still stay home.

Hey, this is awesome. If you live in the USA, conditions are very good, and there almost always are refrigerators. The USA, as we know it is a rich, civilized and well-developed country. Though, if you live in Canada, like me, it might be the most well-developed and civilized country in the world, it's a cold country. 2. This "trick" only work with old school cards switches... the new technology prevent you from doing this "trick", the only way would be to clone your card.

When we went to Greece, the card had a special metal strip in it, so you couldn't just stick anything in the switch. But we stuffed a knife with cardboard wrapped around it (the knife was poking out a bit on the other side). Also what we did is dangerous, so do it at your own risk.
