I'm actually not a fan of Thunderstone. It's trying to do too much with the light, leve/experience, magic/melee attack and the strength system. I played it at Spiel 2010 and it was quit boring. We just played 3-player solitair and waited for the end. Ascension and Dominion are much more fun imho with Ascension > Dominion
The main issue that bothers me at the moment is that it feels like another D&D-lite-done-eh. Of secondary concern is that there appears to be plenty of lag / downtime later on, when the decks become larger. Compound this with three or four players or more ((if the game allows)) and it would seem the problem becomes worse.
Having watched a few games of Dominion and witnessing the above issues, I would imagine they would similarly be present in Thunderstone.
While I like the explained design your deck while playing mechanic, the idea of throwing away your weapons and followers after each turn feels wrong to me.
I think I would prefer to play keeping your accumulated gear and just adding discards and new items to the discard pile.
I like the easy-to-see "Random" cards. That makes a lot of sense. I don't care much for Dominion's slightly different colored backs. This does seem like it would be worth picking up. We enjoy Dominion quite a bit in our family and the theme appeals to me.
One minor correction on your light explanation. You need only 1 Light to cancel out the closest dungeon rank's light penalty. Also, I find the easiest way to remember how the penalty affects the game by simply adding 2HP to a creature for each -1 light.
I would make only one suggestion: The camera is too close to the cards at times. Pulling the camera back a bit would give a clearer view. Great review, though. After reading the rulebook, I wanted a better go-through of the game play, which you offered. This one's definitely on my buy-list.
I have not played either, but I just actually ordered both. They are similar in that you create your own deck during play, but from there, they seem very different. Depending on who I'd be playing with, I'd play one or the other.
This is a fun game but the instructions are a tad wordy. It works far better when you can have a person teach you the game rather than learning from the instructions.
One nice thing about this rather than Dominion. Since the Thunderstone is towards the back of the dungeon deck the games will go longer. No massively fast Province rush decks that end in a few minutes.
I think compare this to base Dominion and it looks more promising. Looking forward to seeing expansions.
Having played this game at BGG.CON and being exposed to it several times since then, I have to say that the game's biggest flaw is that it's underdeveloped. After playing a game that was created by a former Magic developer and then further refined by two very experienced people, this seems a step down in the way that cards and rules are written.
This could have been a really good game. But as it is, I'd rather just play Dominion.
This seems (at least for me) a very good Dominion replacement - slightly more complex, involves more strategic thinking, involves risk taking (choosing alternatives), artwork is amazing, items and heroes combined, increase in levels of heroes (even sounds familiar Heroes of Might and Magic), also seems a bit more time consuming which I, frankly, see to be a very good characteristic of Thunderstone.
Thank you, Tom for the great review. You are at your best as always.
depends what you like more - a variety of actions and more strategy and fantasy theme graphics (this game) against very simple rules, very simple game and even with some level of frustration playing couple of rounds in a row and different design (Dominion)
I've only played this game limited # of times, but from what I've seen, at the very least, it's there. For example, the level 2 thief character when used, causes all other players to discard one card from their hand.
just for single player only?

Just glancing at the review, I can see what he means. The icons on the cards are not very clear at all. It's a red 1, and a green 2.
Other card type games, have very clear icons and text to explain what they do. Still.... looks kind of cool.

this game is just way too nerdy. dominion is something the whole family can enjoy because you're not fighting and crap.
MrTaylork1 3 months ago
@MrTaylork1 why is it bad because you have fighting? Is this an Ameritrash vs. Eurotrash thing?

I think that this game is better than dominion because i didn't have to shuffle only your deck but also fight against monsters!

There's something about the way Tom reviews games that always makes me want to buy them....

Well, he didn't make we want to buy 'Vasco da Gama'. ;-)

It seems like the game is mimicking so many tropes from regular RPGs... I think I'd just as soon play a light RPG instead.

The light mechanic blew my mind! Simple and yet so fitting to dungeoncrawling :)

Great game when you have "worked out" what some of the rules exactly mean!
