  • David got the features the first time he saw the model, the optical aid was used to look at the boobs... Epic paper shaping skills, Dave! :)

  • LOL talk about optical aids and devices.....this artist seems happy to use one any way.....he has phenomenal ability to model the facial forms, but would the detail be so accurate and sharp without his binoculars?

  • Hi: have you posted anywhere what tools you use, ie. type and color of paper, type of pencils, and what is the tool you use for the big dark blocked areas? thanks!

  • About the earlier questions, David is using Pentax Papillio close-focusing binoculars (used as a monocular) to see details. He is blocking in with black 'Pan Pastel' which is powder pastel, applied with a softtool, which is a sort of plastic trowel with some sponge over the end. His DVD about his technique and approach is very worthwhile buying. He is one of those artists who talks you through everything he does and why. Very generous with his knowledge.

  • Hi Dave, I really enjoyed watching you work in this video. I am very happy for your success and thank you for the inspiration!

  • it looks like 80% or your audience is hot women!

  • And I thought that the white coloured pencil was useless ;)

  • Looks like David Hockney just got pawned.

  • What tool is he using in the beginning to block in the lines and shapes of the shadows? It looks like a palette knife dipped in powdered charcoal, but I don't think that that is what it is....

  • That's what I'm wondering as well and I was thinking the same thing (either powder graphite or charcoal). It looks very effective with the thick strokes you can make with it. It might be soluble graphite with just a little teeny bit of water so that it dries very fast.

  • @imkosherdillbill It's a light blue plastic palette knife called a Sofft. It comes with differently shaped nibs that I think personally rip after one or two drawings but they lay down ground up vine charcoal like you're painting with it. I have everyone in class hooked on it.

  • Hi David, I've watched this 4 times already, amazing work - can't stop wondering what it is you're looking through?

  • Master work !

  • I think he's looking through binoculars in reverse to get a better look at the values without having to step back. I might be wrong.

  • Pretty sure those are binoculars, and I'm tempted to try something similar. Seating myself far away from the model would give me a better focus on the broad forms and shapes and then I can use binoculars later on to hone in on the details.

  • That was outstanding. And what Primus song is that?

  • watched from start to finish, that only took u 5 minutes? amazing! ;) ha, no, it's really friggin incredible david! when's my turn?

  • really nice drawing and video. thanks.

  • Hey David! Amazing work as usual, nice to see you at work.
