You want a HENE laser for that, I got one from an old philips laderdisc player from the very early 1980s, ran it on a home made power supply that kept a constant 10A power source to the tube, it gets F'in hot very quick so has to be cooled with freezer spray to stop it melting / fracturing but that will burn though paper and thin fabric no problem only thing is tube don't last too long when used in high power mode )O:

depends what power the laser is. You'll find that a red 200mw laser is cheaper than a 150mw green laser... red lasers are better than green lasers for burning, and green lasers are more visible and better for show than red lasers.

I have 200mW of both. For long distance pointing (50 meters+) always go with green. Anything else I'd recommend red. The light will be much more visible to your eyes at long distances, but the red lasers are cheaper allowing you to get nice extra features like focusing lenses.

Be sure to shop around. I got my lasers for less than $100 total (both 175mw or so).

ALWAYS buy eye protection for high power lasers. You have to remember going blind does not trigger much pain.
