i always was taught that hunting was all about how close you can get to the game. skill and a little luck. but then again, nobody wants to work for anything these days. not really fair chase when you kill something froma 1/2 a mile away.
too me shooting a deer at low yardage is exciting but so is hitting one out at 500+ now im not a sniper by any means. But pingin plates at 500 yrds is exciting to me...maybe i am just too easliy excited.
It takes lots of skill and knowledge to develop loads and guns to do this repeatably. Just taking your grandpas 06 out and shooting at a deer 600 yards away is a different thing all together.
tracking an animal through dense bush and being able to stalk up to within 20 metres of it is what i love about hunting... "long range hunting" should not even be called hunting, as there are no "hunting" skills involved - merely being able to shoot long-range does not make you a hunter.. I've shot deer at 400+ yards and 5 yards, and I have to say the latter is more exciting, more rewarding, and demands a much higher level of skill than just squeezing a trigger.....
@toadecks I completly, agree in most scenarios. I am 14, and an avid bow hunter, so i love getting up close and personal to deer, turkeys, larger game, ect. But for squirrel and other varmint, i am getting into long range hunting. Even though it is not really hunting, it is still fun and challenging. So i would say, it is ok for sittuations like varmint hunting, but the idea of taking an animal like a deer at that range seems wrong. That is just my way of thinking. Happy Hunting :-)
@toadecks yes theres a new word for hunters shooting long ranges. hmm percision shooters hmmmm sniper? any body can kill a deer at 10 yards but can you kill one at a 1000?
I'd say animals over 300/350m are too far, unless you have absoulutely perfect still conditions, obviously in some instances, you can't get close enough, like shooting on a plain or on the open hill, but lonr range shooting for long range shootings sake? no thanks.
@danebrewer10 95 % of my misses are wind related, this is the stuff people see and then think that they can make 1000yd shots. I shoot 10 inch Ballons any more than 600 and your pushing your luck (unethical) with a 308.
